Wtf would his thought process have to be for this to make any sense? Do they see it as an attempt to turn the case into a media circus?

The Batlord 03-09-2017 12:18 PM

Maybe he was trying to get the trial postponed.

Maybe he misinterpreted it when someone told him he would be in the hotseat.

I was a bit skeptical about this because only certain liberal leaning sites were reporting it but Bill HR 1313 is real. I googled that bill number and read the actual bill itself.

Scary.

Judge accused of 'victim-blaming' over rape comments - BBC News

Hopefully she doesn't back down.

OccultHawk 03-11-2017 07:20 PM

It's common sense advice to say it's wise to avoid uncontrolled drunkenness for any person. But during the sentencing of a rapist isn't the time.

BBC World Service - Newsday, English rugby fans criticised for unofficial anthem

Quote:

England rugby fans have sung "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" at every match since 1988 but US academics have recently criticised their choice of tune, saying the song - a traditional African-American spiritual piece about the desire to escape from slavery - is not being used appropriately.
Utterly pathetic. It will continue to be sung.

The Batlord 03-12-2017 09:42 AM

Lulz. I guess it doesn't mean the same thing to the English, but I don't imagine most white Americans would sing that song for something as frivolous as a sporting event. Why on earth would the English want to sing it in the first place?

Because some drunk **** started singing it and his drunk friends started joining in to make it less awkward and they just told everyone that it was a thing for the team to save him from the embarrassment. I'm sure there are several British sitcoms about it.

It just sounds good being sung by so many people, lots of famous songs are quite popular or get reworded and this sort of thing is a big part of fan culture, no disrespect is intended, they just like the song.

If no one cares in England then knock yourselves out, but don't be surprised if you get jumped if you try it in America. Maybe, I don't know how big a deal it would be, but I don't imagine it would be appreciated. A lot of people would probably just be perplexed.

djchameleon 03-12-2017 12:03 PM

I blame Eric Clapton. I'm sure it was his version of the song that caught on and ended up becoming popular with the Brits.

I hope that building is abandoned.

I would hate to live in a building where a train would be going overhead at random hours throughout the day/night.

You would think with China's population density and poverty no structure could possibly be abandoned but it turns out not only singular buildings but entire cities as well. Weird public works projects, corruption, and human migration patterns.

Can't really prevent this stuff without more authoritarianism.

I don't know. The BBC used the term "jihadi"

Cuthbert 03-22-2017 01:04 PM

Just seeing the usual stuff online :D

- Terrorism has no religion
- There are 1.6 billion Muslims
- These are not REAL Muslims
- Something about white people and mental illness
- There will be a backlash against Muslims :D

Just need 5:32 of the Qur'an to be posted now

EDIT - Just seen it.

Well, that's because most religion is illiberal. Islam as written is authoritarian, regressive, and hierarchical. As practiced, much less so. I break ranks with many of my DC liberal friends in agreeing that Islam has more issues with classic liberalism than, say Christianity or Judaism, but from person to person, the differences are negligible.

I go through a similar thought process when walking past the homeless in the park on my way to work. I've actually stopped smoking on my walk home because I'm so tired of telling 20 people, 'no I do not have a cigarette for you. No I don't have $5 dollars. Or $1. I have no dollars (I legit don't carry cash these days). No I will not walk into 7/11 and buy you a soda. Leave me alone'

Very glad my internal thoughts aren't broadcasted for the world to hear.

Try smoking a cigarette at a train station. If anyone was that generous they'd be in debt.
