I think I misunderstood what a strawman argument means. I got the gist, but I misapplied how its used.

Your ad hominem, however, is clear.

The ****tiest revelation is when you find out you work twice as hard as people that get paid much much more than you.

You know the stupid stereotypical stories you get from delusional parents that tell you they used to walk 3 miles home from a job or some **** to afford their house or their new car? That's me except I still can't afford a car or even an apartment. And my insurance is trash. Most people with my conditions could hardly even hold a job and I've had to with no treatment or care for it just to struggle to get by.

I don't understand why the same people that shove the "life isn't fair" **** down your throat are the same ones that believe you get what you earn. You don't. You get taken advantage of because there is nothing you can do about it.

She worked those jobs for a short time and really got an inside look about their lives and how hard they work. A lot of people have to work more than one job to get by, and at the end of the day they're exhausted. Every day. It's grueling and really rather hopeless. A powerful book, that.

I'm interested, though I feel as though I'd just be reading a book describing what I'm already living and understand.

Probably so, but the mechanics of how the impoverished are kept in poverty is aptly described. It's validating.

This hits home as I think a package of mine got jacked last month.

Frownland 12-18-2018 12:55 PM

I'm a big fan of receiving packages from Amazon then reporting them stolen a week after the scheduled delivery date.

Zhanteimi 12-18-2018 01:40 PM

Fuck's sake, guys. This hurts hearing about all these package theft stories. Here in good ol' Japan, every package must be signed for. If you're not home, they leave a slip of paper telling you when they tried to deliver and their phone number, so you can call a schedule a re-delivery time.

^ Yes, I think you probably would. It has the virtue of being very straightforward and easy to read - even after a mind-numbing day of tedious work. You'd be able to compare notes, I suppose, with the different jobs that she tries; about six in all, each for a couple of months I think.

Some people reroute packages to a local retail store and they go there to pick it up. It's much safer. But packages get stolen all the time. I get phone calls about it every day.

Apparently there's been no review process and no consultation either with the military, or with senators or with Allied powers in the area: is anyone else as cynical as me in imagining that Trump is announcing the withdrawal from Syria to deflect from recent PR disasters?
- Comey's speech about Republicans remaining silent as Trump lies about an FBI "break in" and calls a witness cooperating with the FBI "a rat"
- the judge forcing Flynn to destroy the whole Fox/Guilliani/Trump narrative that Flynn was somehow tricked by the FBI - and then going on to voice his disgust that Flynn had "sold out his country".
- the Trump foundation turns out to be a charity the same way Trump University was a university.

( oops! Sorry I interrupted this thread with a news item :shycouch:)

OccultHawk 12-19-2018 05:28 PM

If he wanted to deflect he’d amp up US presence in Syria not withdraw

Like me, he doesn’t care about the news cycle because it doesn’t affect him

All this “bad week” **** on TV doesn’t phase him - he’s not going to jail and the same people love him and the same people hate him

He knows Syria’s a loser and doesn’t want to be LBJ.

Not only that, there's really no right answer with Syria PR-wise. The media will call him a puppet of either the Saudis or Putin. They write the headlines beforehand and just fill in the blanks on key nouns when it comes time to publish.

Lisnaholic 12-19-2018 06:27 PM

I agree with you on these points:-

^ To judge from tonight's news, withdrawal has done the trick of deflection, and it also ties in with his campaign promises. It even superficially plays into the notion that Trump is solving America's overseas problems: North Korea: sorted, ISIS: finished. Unfortunately, neither is true.

^ It's widely reported that, like me, he is addicted to watching cable news channels, and it's also possible that he is already, or in the future will be under sealed indictment.

^That's a neat remark, Anteater, but it doesn't stand up to any serious scrutiny of course.

You know when someone big dies and NYT has a 10,000 word eulogy out immediately?

They most definitely do have pre-written articles bashing Trump whatever he does. This way he’s sucking Russian cob that way Saudi...

Imagine wanting the jump on the story. It is like that.
