Hell hath no fury like a homosexual scorned.

kibbeh 06-22-2016 06:32 PM

i believe that it wasn't about isis tbh. i don't think omar was one of those crazy wahhabi muslims. if he was... he woulda at least made him wife wear hijab. he doesn't strike me as one of those super religious muslims at all... i also don't think it was terrorism. i think he was a psycho.

Zhanteimi 06-22-2016 06:35 PM

He was a self-loathing homosexual who went on a psychotic rampage because he couldn't reconcile his desires with his upbringing.

When this story first broke, I said to ked, "This guy is a homosexual."

Led Zeppelin appear in court over Stairway to Heaven dispute - BBC News

I heard "Tauros" a few years ago, and it's only vaguely reminiscent. Same tempo, I think so. But it seems like it would be more influence than anything.

Frownland 06-24-2016 08:48 AM

Same tempo, melody, and similar tone as the intro. It's clear as day imo. Too bad Zeppelin could afford a squad of lawyers that Spirit couldn't even dream of buying.

Spirit's jealousy doesn't stem from the intro maybe being plagiarized, it's that the rest of Stairway To Heaven is brilliant and that they didn't nearly have the talent to emulate such good music. It was a ridiculous lawsuit to begin with, I saw right through it since the beginning.

Frownland 06-24-2016 09:30 AM

The part everyone and their mother learns on the guitar is the intro and the guitar solo, so Spirit is responsible for a lot of wind up monkeys' talent building. Therefore Spirit is more important than Led Zeppelin.

Also, Zeppelin's absurd defense is that they were too wasted at the time. If you're trashed and commit a crime it still happens, you rich bitches.

How similar were the actual notes? That sounds like the real deciding factor. Can you look at the tabs and say definitively that they're just way too similar?

Chula Vista 06-24-2016 09:32 AM

This just in: Davy Graham suing Spirit!

Next week, Bach sues Davy Graham.

About half of the Stairway intro is borrowed from it and given the circumstances, I'm positive Zeppelin lifted it.

Led Zeppelin cleared of plagiarism in Stairway case - BBC News

During the trial, defence lawyers argued the chord progression in question was very common and had been in use for more than 300 years.

Try being shitfaced 40+ years ago and try to remember anything. In terms of rape or murder, valid. Obviously. But this is a simple guitar intro a 6 year old could learn. There's no weight to any of this at all, and I'm glad Zeppelin won this case. Viva La Jimmy!

Great song. Vaguely reminiscent. At least these guys can sleep knowing they've been cleared of the blame. Zeppelin did have a lot of copyright issues in the past, but they were right in stating that instrument and style have been around for 300 years.

Frownland 06-24-2016 09:58 AM

I'd take that point seriously if Zeppelin didn't write Stairway shortly after touring with Spirit.

Zeppelin's a hot topic today, not just on this thread.

Chula Vista 06-24-2016 10:30 AM

VH1 did a poll a few years ago using musicians, critics, fans, etc. from the past 3-4 decades, and asked them to rate the greatest musical artists of all time.

1. The Beatles
2. Michael Jackson
3. Led Zeppelin

I can live with that.

Frownland chimes in with his usual "popularity doesn't mean ****" response in 5... 4... 3... 2...

The Batlord 06-24-2016 10:41 AM

Are there 300 years of songs they can officially point to that are close to "Stairway to Heaven" to prove their point? I don't care either way, but I'd be amused if Led Zeppelin had to pay out the ass to a band who would never had made more than two pennies off their song if not for Zeppelin making it a marketable product.

Chula Vista 06-24-2016 10:52 AM

Michael Jackson owned the world for a number of years. The day after his Grammy performance Fred Astaire (look him up) called Michael to tell him he was blown away.

Fred Astaire > MB members

A famous dude has ****ty taste. So what?

JGuy Grungeman 06-24-2016 11:00 AM

As far as Pop goes, I'd say Michael Jackson is one of them. Paul Simon's my number 1 guy for folk and pop. A close second may be Beach Boys. For pop rock, Fleetwood Mac, U2, Elton John, and Weezer are some prime choices for me.

Glen Vliet would have approved of this big time. And you know it.

Prince was much better. Prince was a musician, MJ was a performer.

What about them? Purple Rain's his best. I'm saying that there are at least two Michael Jackson albums that beat Prince's music.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART. His birthnae was Don Glen Vliet, changed to Don Van Vliet.

I'm going to start saying James Page if that's the case.

He did it himself when he was in a skiffle band in his teens.
