But they are big enough to go it alone if they wanted.

It's the same way where I am. The only time you usually see kids outside these days is when they're with their parents. The ball fields, woods, and streets are kid-free the vast majority of the time unless the adults are hosting an event of some kind for them. When I was growing up there were kids running free from 9 to 9 most every day during the summer. Our parents had to call for us or go looking for us to get us to come home for lunch and/or dinner. The TV stations around here have been airing commercials for a few years, aimed at children, showing kids outdoors playing and telling them about all the fun they can have outside.

Agreed mate well said. I noticed this with my younger cousins, them and their mates are glued to their iPads and games consoles. They aren't even that much younger than me.

^ That sounds intriguing. If there's a short version of that story, I'd be interested to hear it.

It didn't work out last time they tried it, that's why they came crying to the US to be made a state.

Basically it's just that, after they broke off from Mexico, they tried to go it alone for a few years as their own country and failed miserably because they couldn't fend off Mexico. So they came crying to the US begging to join this country.

In my day the TV stations were telling us that outdoors was where the men in white vans were waiting with candy and bad touchy.

And now it's the opposite?

Lisnaholic 06-26-2016 10:43 AM

Thanks, Janszoon. That doesn't do much for their call for Independence!
I should really know more about those US/Mexican territorial disputes. Obviously down here the "gringos" are cast as the villains. I think especially galling is the fact that there's a US state called New Mexico. Couldn't they have called it something less inflamatory, like The No Hard Feelings State ?

Well, they were going to call it Ex-Mexico but they decided against it.

Not a big EU Fan, but I think there'd be more negative consequences than positive ones.
