All I want to add to this right now is that the astrophysicist Fred Hoyle proposed this idea of the fixed state theory. He wasn't shouted down, but in the end he agreed that his theory was incompatible with the evidence, and dropped it.

He wasn't derided for doing so, he was just trying to come up with other theories.

Well, he was being open minded. I like it when people try and challenge the widely accepted paradigm once in a while. People will start to think a bit more about it and why they accept a certain theory.

If the current paradigm wasn't always being challenged then we wouldn't have progressed so far in our knowledge.

Exactly. It's a very undesirable situation when there is no innovation in science.

However, it can get on my nerves a little bit when some people (No names...cough, cough *ID* cough) keep trying to challenge certain principles, not for scientific reasons but religious ones.

I agree. I tend to be a little more lenient towards religion than most. I understand how much it means to people, so I don't want to intrusive and degrade something that means so much to someone. I like to let people believe what they want to believe and not force my opinions on others. Although religious people tend to be the worst about forcing their ideas on others. I just don't want lower myself to their level.

But if there's one thing I would recommend to religious people it would be: Be a little more open-minded and reasonable. You don't have to completely reject science in order to remain religious.

Did you know I myself am a Christian?

It irritates me when other religious people use science as a vehicle to promote that religion, though. That's not the point of science. Science is for finding out about the world, not for backing up your own interpretation of scripture, which may be wrong anyway.

I would not have taken you to be a Christian.

I think the religion I like the most is Buddhism. Other than that, I've taken some interest in Gnostic Christianity.
