People still don't get it. People are still more willing to peddle the bigotry agenda than to accept obvious reality. People who ironically engage in their own brand of race baiting and flat out bigotry regarding a section of the population.

Trump won because he speaks to people without treating them like his lapdogs. He is the figurehead of several different movements, either intentionally or not. The people actually like what he offers in terms of policy, cultural impact or both.

This was not an election won through bigotry, and if you honestly believe that you perhaps need to remember how little you trusted the media before this result.

OccultHawk 11-09-2016 05:54 AM

I think white supremacy is the core of Trump's win

But this whole thing is unthinkable to me and unimaginable even as it happens so it's obvious I don't have an inkling how it happened

I'm horrified. But I really did hate Hillary. Corporat hawkish bull****. Totally uninspiring.

Goofle 11-09-2016 06:10 AM

Yeah, the same white people who clearly switched from Obama to Trump are white supremacists. Makes sense in upside down world.

I never got to respond to your question about the psychological affects on your kids through corporeal punishments. I am the result of corporeal punishment so it is your judgement whether you like it or not!

The people don't know what he offers in terms of policy because he backtracks and flip flops so much that even he doesn't know what he offers in terms of policy. All he did was pander to the people and tell them what they wanted to hear in the moment. It was all about winning at any means necessary.

He tapped into the large group of white voters that wanted to hear certain things and ended up supporting him for it.

People that don't believe that bigotry played a serious hand in this are straight up naive.

White Women Helped Trump Beat First Female Candidate

WSJ broke it down into groups and showed how white women ended up helping Trump more than others predicted. The uneducated white population came out in full force to push Trump over the edge

I agree.

Frownland 11-09-2016 08:08 AM

I don't blame bigotry entirely but come on guys it's obviously present.

Aux-In 11-09-2016 08:10 AM

Okay that makes sense. Especially since there's a possibility that we'll be seeing a President Pence before the next election

Trump won not by flipping any major districts, but instead by flipping dozens of smaller counties in swing states. Counties that are predominantly white, middle class, and non-college educated. Van Jones nailed it last night by calling it a "Whitelash".

Yup. And so is the majority of the GOP led house and senate. Not to mention the folks that Trump is going to fill his cabinet with.

Nah, I think he's a twat and calling him a "journalist" is a stretch. He's more of a TV personality at this point than anything else.

If we can call Wolf Blitzer or Sean Hannity journalists, well let's just give John Oliver the Pulitzer now.

What don't you like about him? Those scary facts he uses? I mean ja his Trump reporting was obviously biased but that's about it.

I definitely agree with that, but I think that quote comes from a place of respect for journalism. There's a spirit of it in his program, but LWT is definitely not an unbiased source of news information. That doesn't mean it isn't still informative, entertaining, and valuable in its own right for being able to cross the boundaries of news and entertainment in a way that is much more constructive than its predecessors.

He doesn't say anything that ever resonates with me or seems all that intelligent, he just caters to the people who are watching him. If you agree with what he's saying I'm sure it would be easier to digest and support.

Also, yeah his election coverage was garbage and seeing it every time I scrolled down my TL on Facebook probably brought more distaste for him.

The Batlord 11-09-2016 10:51 AM

But he only ever tells one side of the story and it's usually from a rather subjective point of view, which certainly doesn't align with the traditional values of journalism.

As Frown brought up, there's a lot of other clowns out there who don't deserve to be called journalists either.

I don't think so, I just have different political opinions than some of you. I think I side with Frown on politics more than I would with Goof or anyone else around here, he just posts so much that it's easier to find stuff we disagree about.

Should journalists be impartial when it comes to the Ku Klux Klan? So long as they're not being dishonest with their reporting then bias can be perfectly fine and respectable.

Right, because it's not journalism. It's a TV show centered on comedy and social welfare.

Chula Vista 11-09-2016 10:54 AM

Let's just scrap the word journalist all together. Every stinking one of them on the tube are partisan talking heads. They all deal with varying amounts of hyperbole. Oliver is definitely well down on that scale though. Hannity and O'Reilly just blatantly make **** up all the time.

It depends on what you look for in your reports. Do you want something that's unbiased and honest, or something that may input the writers opinion in order to add entertainment. We live in a time where not only do people prefer the entertainment aspect, but the unbiased side is genuinely becoming hard to find.

Agreed. All you need to be called a journalist now is a YouTube channel or a Twitter account.

The Batlord 11-09-2016 10:58 AM

Like I said, the issue with partisan reporting isn't so much the bias as it is being dishonest and underhandedly manipulative. All people are biased, so expecting reporting to be unbiased is absurd, and journalism is a platform to inform and shape narratives, so not doing so when it's important is missing an opportunity.

Idunno, comedy coming first doesn't negate the journalistic qualities of the show. Buzz Adrin will be the first to tell you that coming second doesn't make you irrelevant. I've yet to see misinformation on LWT.

Also, Oliver makes it very clear where he's kidding and where he's reporting.
