So... Frank Ocean is the news I see.

Alfred 07-05-2012 09:12 PM

I'm pretty non-plussed, though this is definitely a big deal in the context of the hip-hop community.

I think it's interesting because of all the flak OFWGKTA has received for their lyrics.

Alfred 07-05-2012 09:33 PM

Well, Syd being a gay woman kind of softened that blow for me. But yes, considering their love for the word "faggot" it is pretty interesting.

1:24:20 mark. The whole video is interesting, but seems a little pointless, although it does bring up some good points.

Edit: I can't actually find the bit I meant. Basically KRS-One speaks about the word bitch, and discusses the various ways in which it can be used within Hip Hop, Slaughterhouse also do this.

Norg 07-08-2012 12:48 AM

Gucci Little Piggy 07-08-2012 05:53 AM

I kinda agree with Norg, I've listened to the OF Tape Volume 2 a while ago and honestly, it's not all that great. They have some decent songs but I can't really tell in what sense they are so mad different compared to other hiphop groups.

DoctorSoft 07-08-2012 11:04 AM

Manky, definately check out Hodgy's Untitled EP. Probably the most slept on OF realease, and "In A Dream" is one of the best songs they've done imo.

^ Nobody listen to this? I thought it was pretty dope. Odd Future may have fell off, but Earl still looks like he's going to be something to look forward to.

Surell 11-13-2012 09:33 PM

Odd future never fell off, people just jumped off the bandwagon and Tyler went a little overboard, but Domo's a much better rapper, Left Brain's beats are still hard, Mike G's still straight, and yeah, Earl's back, and the track is hot, thanks to probably Tyler production.

Phantom Limb 11-14-2012 11:21 AM

Pure gold

Thom Yorke 11-14-2012 01:55 PM

^ That was great. I'm guessing that's Tyler as well?

When I downloaded it it said it was track 6. Do you know what the other tracks are like?

Who's tyler? That was Flying Lotus on production and Earl and Captain Murphy rapping? I didn't even know it was on an album????

Sparky 11-14-2012 04:46 PM

i read tyler might be captain murphy

Surell 11-15-2012 11:09 PM

I've never heard of no Captain Murphy before this, and Earl is still pretty attached to the Wolf Gang, believe it or not, so that wouldn't shock me. Plus Tyler's one for switching his voice/name on different projects so i wouldn't doubt it. Personally, i haven't heard the song yet, sooo

14232949 11-28-2012 02:20 PM

Frank more than came into his own with Channel ORANGE and triumphed everything the group had done prior to it combined.
He's moving more away from Odd Future, because honestly they'll just hold him back.

Earl is the one I don't understand the love for, don't see anything special about him as an MC. Tyler is on make or break with his next album, if he releases one of the same quality of Goblin without making a duplicate, he can make something of his youthful exuberance. If not, he's just going to go down as another musician who peaked too early and couldn't live up to his potential.

Surell 11-28-2012 02:55 PM

Besides, though Channel Orange is probably the opus of the entire group right now, his personality is still in line with the group. He also still falls back on the group for production, verses, etc., so i don't see him entirely breaking away, though he's definitely making a name for himself.

14232949 11-28-2012 03:02 PM

Yeah, that's fair but it's only a matter of time until bigger and better producers want to work with him.
Even on Channel ORANGE he had collaborations with big names such as Andre 3000 and John Mayer, so I don't think by the time his next album rolls around there'll be much input from the rest of Odd Future.

Surell 11-28-2012 10:09 PM

Well, John Mayer's contribution was still on a Tyler produced track, and, depending on which version of the album you listen to, Tyler is featured for a verse on the very end of the album, with a song title slightly referencing Goblin (Golden Girl). I'm not against Frank breaking off to make his own, but i'd be disappointed if he entirely abandoned the crew, as you can see the similarities and chemistry (useful chemistry-- all those different rap personalities at your disposal?) between them.

possibly the best thing to come out in 2012

Cuthbert 12-02-2012 10:34 PM

I have never heard an Odd Future track.

Come at me.

Goofle 12-03-2012 11:18 AM

At least we now know Flying Lotus is a shitty rapper.

Thom Yorke 12-03-2012 09:58 PM

Pretty solid album. Loving the beats, especially the songs starting at 6:20, 21:30, and 27:30.

What's up with the tracklist, or is it more supposed to be a continuous track? I looked it up and there are like 30 songs on a 30 minute album.

Its 15 tracks. Some of the beat are recycled-"the ritual", the ending tnght track and the earl feature was out a few weeks ago.

I think you can download the delux edition for free it has different cover art for each song it pretty cool

FrigginParadox 12-04-2012 06:46 PM

I thought Duality was pretty cool. The lyrics werent all that great but it was fun album with great beats. I loved the old old samples like on MMF and Gone fishing. I also love the ignorance on Drive thru

True. But I don't consider MC Ride as a proper "MC" to be honest. Death Grips' music is much better though.

yeeesh idk bro

Goofle 12-04-2012 07:39 PM

It is. I mean, you can look to Flying Lotus' music itself for a much better version, or ASAP Rocky or whatever, but who's doing what Death Grips do? Hardly anyone. And I prefer what they are doing to some spacey Hip Hop beats that have become completely boring, especially when accompanied by a terrible rapper.

FrigginParadox 12-04-2012 07:46 PM

i feel like comparing death grips to Flylo/captain murphy is different. When i listened to them both i had compleatly two different impressions on it, yet i loved them both. Death Grips are incredibly original, they are bushing the genre of hiphop so far that it is barely only hiphop and I love it. Captain Murphy was just something fun, that album was one of thoes albums you dont come to for great lyricism like when you would listen to ASAP Rocky. BUT i do know what your saying because most of the songs I do like beacause of the beats, the songs i dont like on Duality are also because of the beats. The lyrics just add something extra to it for me

Better version of what?

Why is it boring? Why is he a terrible rapper?

Firstly, I mean the genre as a whole (cloud rap/psychedelic rap) is becoming boring, not Captain Murphy, because nobody is pushing much of a boundary. It's good, no doubt, but nothing out of the ordinary or extremely interesting.

And he is just a pretty trashy rapper. I don't think it's something I have to explain in great detail.

Sparky 12-04-2012 08:16 PM

So because Death Grips music is different it's much better?

I'm not going to contest the "whole ---- is becoming boring"because a, its an awesome blanket statement, no doubt, and b, i had no idea cloud rap/psychedelic rap was a genre, much less one already on the demise.

As for the rapping ability, it's certainly suspect. But these aren't exactly basic beats,I have yet to hear anyone rap better on TNGHT(don't believe me google Kenderick Lamar+TNGHT). I think the production of his voice, the combination of tyler-esque monotone and quasimoto-inspired high pitch voice are engaging enough that they make up for what he lacks structurally.
It's fairly deep, i'm still picking out new reference and whatknot, something I can't do when listening to death grip because the dude isn't so much actually rapping as he is blabbering nonsense, albeit in a very cutting edge, profound way.

I am fine with the rest of your post, it's all opinion, but please don't assume that I think the above.

It's different AND better. If it was different and terrible (to my tastes) I wouldn't be sticking up for it.
