Ken Nordine - Colors (1966)

so the other night i was listening to a compilation i have called "RE/SEARCH: Incredibly Strange Music, Volume II" and i noticed this weird (duh!) track called "Green"....after a few seconds of research i find out that this guy Ken Nordine did and entire album of 90 seconds songs talking about 34 different colors with this weird kind of beatnik jazz playing behind him....i also came to realize that this guy single handedly created a genre called "Word Jazz" and released several quirky albums.....all of which have been remastered and are available on itunes ....so far this album is beyond a gem....and will find its way onto every compilation i make from this point on

edit....

a little example of "Word Jazz"

I used to make compilations with the Bud Light Presents - Real Men Of Genius commercials sprinkled throughout. What you've discovered right there is kind of what I was going for, but in a more intellectual manner. Thanks.

David Bowie's new one is beginning to really grow on me, though I didn't like it that much on first listen. Definitely improves with further listens.

Also just downloaded the new one from Big Big Train. Haven't listened to it yet, but if it's anywhere as good as part 1 I'm sold!

Boat - Pretend to Be Brave (2013)
New release from local indie rock band, their 5th LP. Fun indie rock just like their others. No songs in particular grabbed me on the first spin, hopefully that will change with subsequent listens. I know that was the case with Dress Like Your Idols as well.

I'd love to see your signature/links too, but the huge and obnoxious ones have caused me to block all signatures.

ps Mr Burns will become Springfield's billionaire super hero "Fruit Bat Man" this week....just a heads up

so upon three listens to the Color album....i honestly think it is one of the most brilliant things i've heard in years....the music fits perfectly with the color its associated with....the colors are all examples of the human condition....and this guys voices is groovier than brown acid at fucking woodstock....i am now officially a huge fan of "Word Jazz"....and can't wait to devour everything i can get my hands on

Is that the actual cover art, or did you just make that in ms paint to put up in lieu of the cover art?

That is the real deal. I don't know what Bowie was thinking. Either that or he's just oblivious to the awfulness of that cover.

Justin Timberlake - The 20/20 Experience

Okay, I am only on the first song, but this is really good. The average track length is around six minutes (12 tracks in total) and I think this may turn out to be one of the most ambitious Contemporary R&B albums of all time. Always liked JT so glad to see he is going all out.

There's rather a good explanation of how they decided to use this cover in the thread "New Bowie album and single" in the Rock subforum. Worth reading...

Fourth listen now and I'm really starting to like it. However I have to admit that I only persevered originally because it was Bowie, and you don't just chuck him at first listen. Glad I stayed the course, as it's turning out to be a really good album. Mind you, I would have liked to have been drawn in right from the beginning, but still, definitely a grower.
