This might be favorite Death Grips release, just hoping disc two is better so that "The Powers that B" becomes my favorite DG record.

Anywho

Just for whatever it's worth, you can get around the censorship by putting (with no spaces) around a letter. It's the same principle as italicizing one letter - you only get censored if there's no formatting between letters, but that formatting doesn't have to actually do anything. So setting the color of one letter to black or setting the size of one letter to 2 will avert the censorship but your text will look the same because those are the defaults.

For example: Fuck off.

Not sure if it would work in an image url, though.

Zhanteimi 12-17-2014 02:42 PM

Exactly. The image URL gave me asterisks, which meant it wouldn't display my picture properly.

this is terribly impractical but I couldn't think of a better way to start my collection.

If you don't have an 8-track tape player yet (and you're not already aware of this) you can look forward to the program changes which often occur in the middle of songs. Sometimes the song fades out before the change and fades back in after the change, and sometimes the change happens abruptly without warning. One of several reasons I gave up on the format rather quickly back in the day.

Aesop Rock - Fast Cars, Danger, Fire and Knives (2005)

I guess this is all right, but, actually, I don't really know. I mean, I think I'm losing or have lost my grip on hip-hop. There used to be a time when I'd eat up Outkast, 2Pac, and Eminem, but now I can barely comprehend what is being said in rap. The only track I understood on this album was Track 4. I dug Track 5, but only because of the imagery. I think rap and I are about to part ways. I still like a bit of rap embedded in other music, like Speakerboxx or Hokey Fright, but an album of nothing but rap--I don't get it anymore.

Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet (1990)

I'm not giving up on rap, nor do I despise it. Although this is my first time to listen to this album (I thought it appropriate considering all the racial unrest Stateside now), I get this.

Goofle 12-17-2014 04:40 PM

That to me is a case of liking a great album more than a far worse one :) And I did warn you! :P

Yob - Clearing the Path to Ascend

So I was partway through the opening track and I was positive that Electric Wizard's "Time to Die" was much, much better than this. So I started reviewing it a bit in this thread. Then about 7 minutes into the first track I wasn't so sure. The vocals start off somewhat subpar to Electric Wizard (but let's be honest, if any metal band is put up to the standards of EW, it's an impossible leap to bound over), but they quickly get better. Throughout the album, the vocals get heavier, the guitars get more dreary, and my opinion of the album increases.

It's definitely going to take a couple of listens because of how much I fucking love "Time To Die," but this may be one of my albums of the year.

Josef K 12-18-2014 06:02 AM

That album is so fantastic. Electric Wizard have been on my list forever but I haven't heard anything of theirs yet.

Aesop Rock - Labor Days (2001)

This is an amazing album, but, again, it doesn't touch me the way other genres do. I think I'm losing my connection to hip-hop. Just trying to be honest with myself and respect the music for what it is, not trying to make it mean something to me it can't. Anyway, as William Shatner said, "At my age, I need serenity". There were two standout moments for me on this album, though.

First, on "No Regrets", when he says

"I've never had a dream in my life
Because a dream is what you wanna do but still haven't pursued"

Yes. So true.

Second, on "Daylight", when he says

"Life's not a bitch. Life is a beautiful woman
You only call her a bitch because she won't let you get that pussy"

Yeah.

There are a few murky songs that have brought the experience down for me each time. But maybe I'm letting it cast too big of a shadow on the entire album. There's quality stuff to be found - it's just less varied than his last two so it's easy to feel just one mood from the whole thing, if that makes sense.

I appreciate it for what it is, and I like the more organic take on electronic music- it all feels very real, like the artist stole snippets of time and space and put it all together. I like the jazzy samples and some of the songs are truly gorgeous. But it's just so looooong. I mean I know it's an experimental electronica album and all, but God, I was falling asleep. Maybe I'm missing something, but I really don't intend to listen to it again. I'm off to more interesting ambient records.

Some incredible sax heavy free jazz. It's really great on all fronts, but the dual (yep) alto saxes really stand out on this record. I'm thinking Matana Roberts fans will dig this record.

I love how they mastered the "noise" rock sounds for Attack on Memory, but made it even LOUDER for Here & Nowhere Else. For that alone, I enjoy that record more. Not to mention, they put on one hell of a badass show.
