Darren Korb - Transistor Original Soundtrack

It's funny, as much as I enjoyed Supergiant's previous game, Bastion, it was actually the soundtrack that had me more anticipatory for Transistor. Given the cyberpunk-ish nature of the game Transistor, the music on this album has far less acoustic guitar moments as was found on Bastion's soundtrack, this time more in favour for more electronic sounds. That's not to say there's no acoustic instruments found on this soundtrack, in fact there's one song where I swear I heard a banjo in it somewhere, but Bastion and Transistor are very different games with very different settings, and the music on this OST definitely would be in my cyberpunk movie.

Definitely worth a go.

I listened to the second song off their upcoming full length on Sub Pop, "Body & Blood," today and loved it, so I thought I'd get their mixtape in preparation for CLPPNG. Really interesting rap, good flow, mixed with harsh noise influenced beats. Plus the album art is rad.

Hamilton Leithauser - Black Hours


Listened to it on NPR First Listen and really liked it. I'm also a big fan of The Walkmen, so I had to pick this one up.

The Long Ryders - Native Sons (1984)
Been meaning to play this one for a while based on some songs I've heard, namely "Ivory Tower". This album apparently bridges the gap between The Byrds' and Gram Parsons' country rock and alt-country of bands like Wilco. Mostly really good, there's just one overly country sound that's a bit too close to new country for my liking. Shame about that album cover too, I think if it was on something from the 60s or 70s it would be forgivable but it doesn't quite fit this music IMO, makes it look more dated than it sounds for 1984.




Violent Femmes - Hallowed Ground (1984)
This was not on my radar until I started perusing the RYM 1984 charts, as the Violent Femmes were never a band I had much interest in. I've known the hits but never loved them. I listened to their debut a few times last week, trying to compile my 1983 top 10, but ended up liking it less than I expected. Halfway through this one and I'm actually liking it a lot more. Makes me think it could make my 1984 top 10 once I get more familiar with it.




Felt - The Splendour of Fear (1984)
Another one I discovered thanks to the 1984 RYM charts - I can't deny the cover caught my attention. Really good post-punk / jangle pop with nice instrumentals and great guitar playing throughout. Vocals aren't particularly strong or unique but a really great vibe overall. I'll be playing this more and checking out their other stuff.




Rain Parade - Emergency Third Rail Power Trip (1983)
This one's been on my radar a bit longer, due to recommendations from people on another forum. I think I had the volume a bit lower for this so it ended up being more of a cursory listen than the others tonight. I'll have to revisit soon. Definitely reminded me of some other stuff, probably the stuff I've listened to before that prompted the recommendation, but I can't remember what. Anyway I'll have to revisit this one to get a better feel for it.




Echo and The Bunnymen - Crocodiles (1980)
The 80s fest continues with another first listen! I started to play The Psychedelic Furs' Talk Talk Talk but after a couple of songs (and enjoying "Pretty in Pink") my g/f asked if I had any Echo and The Bunnymen. I said I don't but Spotify does, so I looked into their albums (haven't heard any in their entirety) and decided to start with the debut. Got halfway through and she asked if I could play "The Killing Moon" from Ocean Rain, so now we're onto that album for a little bit before heading to bed - definitely like what I heard enough that I already downloaded it. Same with all the others, save for Rain Parade which I need to reevaluate.

Solid night of first listens.

I recommend you check out The Strange Idols Pattern and Other Short Stories and Forever Breathes the Lonely Word. The former has some amazing guitar playing and the latter features a nice combining of organ and jangly guitar. Lawrence certainly can't sing but I wouldn't say that his vocals are not unique. I think of him more as a poet fronting a jangle pop band than a singer. I find his vocal style quite distinct.
