two listens this afternoon

African Percussion Meeting by Kakraba Robi & Midori Takada

a neat live album from Ghanese gyil [pictured] master Kakraba Lobi and another legend Takada. Interestingly, the album title misspells Lobi's name in the title, in what looks like the Japanese pronunciation. Even more interestingly (to me) is the track "Eastern African Songs II" being a take on Mkwaju Ensemble's "Lemore" - which in itself could be a take on another.

this then lead to

Songs of Paapieye by SK Kakraba

the nephew of Lobi and takes after him on the gyil. And he's found a new instrument technique for Frown's next album: "The buzzy rattle emitted with each note comes from the silk walls of spiders’ egg sacs stretched across holes in the gourds".

quality stuff these are

The David Blamires Group - self titled (1992)

David Blamires is one of the two vocalists who participated in all the great Pat Metheny Group albums between '84 and '98. This album is very much in line with all that material sonically, but it has a spiritual flavor that stands out on its own.

The 1975 - A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships (2018)

Some people are saying this is some kind of mainstream once-in-a-generation game changer, but I think it's just a decent pop record so far.

STEFA* - Sepalina

A minimalist avant-garde/electronic/vocal type of album.
