RATM is great in concept, but the execution is a bit of a 50/50 split. Too many of their songs end up sounding the same. Not like AC/DC-level of sameness, but similar enough where as a casual fan, I can't really identify specific tracks with specific albums. However, staying consistent with their sounds means that they rarely put out something overtly bad. And when everything comes together with the lyrics, riffs and groove, RATM make some pretty good music that hits a sweet spot between aggression and acceptability.

RATM have their own sound and they know it well. My problem is because they are so entrenched in that sound, their songs have to go above and beyond to make it seem like they aren't just going through the motions. And they don't do that often enough for me to return to their work with regularity. If I hear it somewhere, I won't complain and will listen, but I'm not usually seeking out their music on my own free will.

Audioslave. It was just one concert.

i remember when i was like 12 and thought Audioslave was the **** but in retrospect they're probably bad enough to cancel out RATM entire existence. their music physically pains me with it's boringness, especially when compared to the energy in rage's material.

Audioslave is Soundgarden-Lite. RATM was one of the more heavier acts when they came out and held up pretty well for many years. As with most bands creativity is much more prevalent in earlier works. Its hard not to go through the motions at some point when there are only so many chords on a guitar and only so much strife to scream about. RATM is one of those 90's bands that sounds even better live, Their energy and overall entertainment value have to at least be a 6/10 to 7

I'm not a huge Rage fan, but this is still one of the top tracks ever.

Their first album was just RATM with a singer rather than a rapper.

If you're speaking literally with regards to band members and not in terms of sound, yes. If you're talking about sound go buy a new set of ears.

Apparently you need new ears. It's the same guitar work, the same drum work, same bass work. The vocals are the only d8fference.

It's the same guitarist, bassist, and drummer, but a totally different sound. The evidence of this is that Audioslave is garbage and RATM is not. If you can see De La Rocha rapping over songs like Shadow of the Sun and Like a Stone, then maybe you don't know what RATM sounds like lol.
