Not that any of this applies to MLM.
I was just lol'ing at how condescending that post kind of sounded.

@Frownland

Yeah I agree. It took me a lot of time and basement dwelling to get as deep into music as I am now. If I actually had a life, I would probably listen to REM when I'm sad and leave it at that.

EDIT: That makes it seem like I didn't even read what you wrote. What I mean is that I agree that people avoid those emotions because they haven't gotten used to confront them in art in a more direct, uncomfortable way. Everybody Hurts by REM, for example, is a more safe, self pitying way of dealing with feeling a bit blue. The song is like a friendly hug from someone who understands. It's not going to make you feel depressed about how **** everything is like some post black song about the meaninglessness of existence (if that's a thing that exists. I'd imagine it is).

Oh, here's an opinion that may or may not be unpopular: "Everybody Hurts" is just the ****tiest ****ing song. It's boring as Mr. Rogers' rap sheet and the chorus is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. How on earth did Michael Stipe sing that out loud and not go, "Oh... ouch."?

Michael Stipe had a knack for writing lame songs.

It's universal, I guess. It's the "I'm feeling sad" version of a conventional song about falling in love.

But its message is so generic that it's almost like a commercial, where the cheap emotional manipulation is so obvious that you can't believe anyone thought we wouldn't notice.

It probably got a lot of its popularity from people watching that music video on MTV

Or maybe he knew that corny greeting card sentiments mean a hit single. I think he can do better than that if he wants to, but REM's music is entirely too dull for me to bother finding that out.

There's a band in Denmark called TV2 that always refers to themselves as "the world's most boring band". I don't think they took REM into account when thinking up that slogan.
