I really think you could change your view of metal if your just got shown the right things. Honestly.
We'd need to have a powwow about this to decide the albums, but I second this challenge. He'll never accept it because trying wouldn't jibe with his superior, elitist position of metal sucking, period.

Yes i agree. What albums to choose would need some consideration and agreement. There are countless metal subgenres, and I - as a metal fan - still manage to be surprised from time to time. I will even leave the choice of metal albums up to other members, since I think several MB members have at least as good a grasp of metal as I do.

OK, I probably hate metal as much as him, but I have an album for him to listen to. (He'll probably won't though, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

I nominate this:

But given Elph's animosity towards the genre, I think it would be possible to boild 40+ years of metal music history down to just 3 or so must-listen albums. Not an easy task, but not impossible. It would not give the full scope. Would not show you how deep and weird this area of music history goes, but at least you could be proven wrong on your assumption that the entire genre is without merit.

I mean, just take my ill will towards the rock muic genre. Which, by the way, has rubbed Elph the wrong way more than once. Despite that, I still see what's so great about PJ Harvey, and I love Roxy Music (plus I loce some Bowie songs, appreciate a bit of Sonic Youth, etc.). My hope for this whole experiment (if it ends up going anywhere) would be that Elphenor would learn to appreciate just a few metal acts. That's really all.

Eh... maybe? I don't know. I feel like it'll take something really different to entice him unless Elph has a secret Sabbath fetish, which I suspect he doesn't. He's a wary baby deer who you have to entice with just the right album lest you scare him away. Something more experimental but nowhere near prog probably.
