I really like Jethro Tull but I never considered them progressive exactly, more like over the top blues-rock

Lol, they practically invented the genre. If you don't like them, fine, but don't try to justify your dislike by calling them 'generic'. KC is many things, not all of them good, but generic ain't one of them. Their discography stretches across five separate decades and countless genres (Several of which they innovated).

What I've heard from them sounds generic to me, I don't need to justify myself or my opinions in the eyes of fanboys. Larks Tongues In Aspic, ITCOKC, Red, I've heard them all and can't understand my so many people lose their **** over them.

I always thought I should add some King Crimson to my collection..... and I am pretty sure I will, eventually...

Ignore Proggy, I'm interested in your explanation. What makes them generic? One connoisseur to another.

Those are three of their first 5 albums...Like TL said, I'm interested in your explanation. No you don't "Have to justify yourself to fanboys" but it sure would be nice.

They show flashes of eccentricity at times, like most bands do, but it usually just devolves into bluesy rock rif***e. Take Larks Tongues in Aspic for example, it's like stadium rock mixed with Comus, heavier on the former. I was expecting more technicality or experimentation but instead I heard more average prog fare. It's a product of their reputation I guess, everyone hypes them up to be the second coming and they can't possibly live up to it. I dont see the heavy jazz instrumentation or the baroque classics being incorporated as well as they are billed to be. I see alot of rock experimentation, but not the bridging of genres that they supposedly accomplished.

Good enough for me. What do you think of Van Der Graaf?

I haven't heard enough to condemn them but H to He Who Am the Only One sounded like David Bowie and Elton John made a prog album. Way too much electric piano for my liking.

Here's some of my unpopular opinions:

Charles Mingus>>Sun Ra>John Coltrane>>>> Miles Davis
The Kinks are way better than The Rolling Stones
Tim Buckley>Jeff Buckley
Just about every indie band out there is overrated.(not sure how popular/unpopular this one is)
Frank Zappa OWNS The Beatles in the 60's which wasn't even his best decade(that was the 70's)
Broadway the Hard way is a good album as is Jazz From Hell.
The best guitarist ever was Frank Zappa.
Soul/R&B is a great genre and is better than Rap, Reggae, and Blues combined.
Neither Brahms nor Wagner were the best of the Romantics, Chopin was.
Tom Lehrer is the best popular music had to offer in the 50's.
J.S. Bach is boring, in fact the whole Baroque era had very dull music, with a few exceptions.
Radiohead is a great rock band but they were never that original.
Progressive Rock is the best rock sub genre.
Univers Zero is the best Progressive rock band.
Classical>Jazz
Metal is not very good.(This includes every sub genre)
Contrary to popular opinion Electronic music is indeed emotional.
I don't care what anyone say's Joy Division is Crap.
Ravi Shankar is better than Phillip Glass and a lot of modern composers for that matter.
Yes>Led Zeppelin
The Dead Kennedys>Fear>>The Ramones>>>The Clash
Post rock is indies take on prog except its boring unlike prog.
Neil Young is better than Bob Dylan.
Sparks is Amazing. Better than any other 70's, 80's, or 90's pop band.
Rap is a terrible genre, but not all of it is bad.
Elliott Smith>Nick Drake
John Cage is a crappy composer.
We need more organs, vibraphones and bassoons in music.
Emerson Lake and Palmer are amazing and better than Dream Theater.
Pet Sounds is overrated.
The album Loveless(My Bloody Valentine) should never be loved as the name implies.
Adam Lambert is a terrible singer as far as phrasing goes.
TuPac is not a good poet.
Mr. Bungle>Faith No More.
The Allman Brothers Band>Lynyrd Skynard.
Kind of Blue is boring.
FF6 and 8s soundtrack owns FF7s soundtrack.
Moonlight Sonata is Beethovens Worst work.
Rush is good but nowhere near the best prog rock band.
