I can accept this viewpoint because I had a lot of friends growing up who listened to awful punk music, which sounded like a horrid mess, but it was justified because of the powerful political lyrics behind it (if you could make them out).

I hated the music, so I didn't care what the lyrics were about, I used to preach that if they were so bothered about the lyrics why didn't they read poetry while listening to decent music! But with Leonard Cohen I'm sorry I do enjoy just listening to hear the words and relax. It's like having poetry read to you.

...case and point, really. it's not Music, it's poetry. Some of his stuff is fantastic, from that respect, some of his stuff is utter trash from any respect, but you get that with any artist of any shape or form. My argument is that what he doesn't isn't and shouldn't ever really be considered music.

Ah, the "this isn't music" retort... Music = not restricted to musical tones. The title of 'music' is misleading, as it encompasses many abstract forms of art that don't necessarily inherit playing any instrument. Poetry is one of them. Many artists have been, for decades, using spoken word passages in their music. It's an entirely new way of surprising and intriguing the listener. Throwing in elements other than melodic sounds, deliberate cacophony, finding new ways to surprise and intrigue people...

Though that argument should not come into play here, considering Cohen DOES have music in his compositions... So what if his lyrics overshadow the music? Of course his lyrics are fantastic; he's a poet. Though he integrates his musical pursuits into his works seamlessly. Without the lonely guitar part in "Famous Blue Raincoat", his words wouldn't sound nearly as painful or meaningful. His voice is both a vehicle for words and a way to excrete emotion. His work is a combination of tortured language and lonely music that fits the picture, if you will. The musical part is an embellishment on the words, to give them mood and power, and even though it's usually the other way around, it works out.

Well... you've given me something to look into, thanks.

The one thing that comes to mind for me is I don't like The Velvet Underground much at all. I'm not really sure what I'm missing there, but I've tried 3 albums and found all of them pretty uninteresting.

Go into punk music. You'd be great.
