Well, this thread is about unpopular music opinions, so my utter contempt for jazz pretty much fits the bill!! When making a personal judgement on a certain genre of music, the one thing that I do is actually listen to it first. My, or anyone else's, love of music is irrelevant - if you don't like something, you don't like it.

It was a friend who tried to introduce me to it, several years ago, so the chances of me knowing who I was listening to are none. We both worked in a hotel in Wigan at the time and, each year during the local jazz festival, he'd play his CD's at work. When we were out at the weekend and invariably ended up back at his for a few late one, he'd play some more.

Over the course of a few months he unsuccessfully tried to convert me, but I found it impossible to get any enjoyment from it which, like yourself, my friend didn't understand (one man's meat and all that).

try some jazz-rock fusion

Mahavishnu Orchestra's first 2 albums are a good place to start

It just seems like hating a whole genre based on a few pieces you've heard is a bit ignorant.

For the most part I disliked a lot of what was considered Doom and Death Metal. But I still gave it a go and found some bands that were good.

But I guess that's just my opinion.

I understand you feel that you've given it a listen but your description of what jazz is makes it sound like you've only heard some free jazz and a couple Shirley Bassey songs. Have you ever considered the idea that maybe the guy who tried to introduce you to it just has a shitty taste in jazz? As I mentioned before, jazz is a vast and varied genre that has been branching and evolving for a century and your exposure to it sounds incredibly limited. The way you characterized it in your previous post sounds like you've never heard swing or dixieland or acid jazz or fusion or latin jazz or jazz punk or soul jazz or bossa nova or gypsy jazz or third stream or any of the dozens of other permutations of the genre. Can you imagine dismissing all of rock music, with its enormous range of styles and sixty plus year history, because some guy once played you the Monkees and a couple hair metal bands? That's what you're doing here.

I think Springsteen is loved as much as he is despised. He's certainly done a decent job of polarizing music lovers.

There's a lot of good jazz out there, you just have to find it. Maybe you may not be in the mood to become accustomed to it, but if you do a check on recommendations to you on good jazz every once in a while, it may just click. Hell, I used to hate jazz, folk, hip-hop, and anything else that wasn't thrash, glam, or nu metal until I attempted to expand my horizons.

What I'm trying to say is that if you're not ready for it now, try to remain neutral on it. No hate, no love, don't feel any emotion towards it. When you come back to an artist, album, or--as you've attempted--a genre as a whole with an unbiased frame of thought, then you may see something new in it that you didn't notice before. If you don't like it now, then fine. Just give jazz another try in the future, maybe see this thread for some recommendations if you're serious about gaining respect for the genre, if anything: http://www.musicbanter.com/jazz-blue...on-thread.html

Hope I could help.

Air Supply's "Making Love Out of Nothing At All" is a great track
