I respect your opinion. However. I will state that while I tend to have similar thinking on the matter. Saying something like Punk, Alternative, Thrash or Hardcore are not genre's, well, it isn't something I feel is correct.

Any of those are broad 'terms' or 'definitions' of a type, or style of music derivative from another genre of music. That makes them valid or recognized sub genre's of existing genre's. In my mind. I too file bands I listen to under Punk, Rock, Metal, because I feel that either of those three cover a band well enough to fall under either of the three. But! As I stated before. Something like Alternative Rock exists or is valid because there are varying types of Rock that bands play, same goes for Metal or Punk music...

Every sub genre of music has the 'fathering' or primary genre that they branch off from. It's normal occurring evolution or progression for any kind of music to eventually take on changes. That's why there are sub genre's.

I've said things repeatedly. hoping that my point is clear to you. Alternative Rock, Punk Rock, Thrash or Hardcore. They're all valid. Even if Punk Rock is just Punk to begin with. Some people just identify either of the two differently.

Not sure if it's the same thing but I have a friend who sings in the choir at my university, and he only likes Michael Jackson songs that don't have the singer's "vocal hiccups."
