If I do that, there will be those people who are like "why don't you just put this in some other genre forum?" I believe that avant-garde and experimental both are just as much musical genres as punk and electronica are and therefore deserve to be treated as such.

I think experimental and avant-garde are two of the biggest umbrella terms known to music and can cover anything from Merzbow to The Shaggs.

PopIsDead 05-22-2007 07:02 PM

I think rock and alternative are two of the biggest umbrella terms known to music.

Experimental can include groups from every single genre, not just rock n' roll. Avant-garde doesn't even limit itself to music.

There, I win.

PopIsDead 05-22-2007 07:22 PM

Then where do you suggest one would put an artist that doesn't limit itself to music? Surely not the general music forum.

... depends what kind of music they make. This is a music forum, after all.

And if they don't make any music at all.. the lounge.

PopIsDead 05-22-2007 07:38 PM

In that case, maybe I'll just leave this forum and join a general art forum that I can actually discuss my favourite avant-garde musicians without worrying about what musical genre they'd fit in. Do you know of any?

Anyway, what forum would you suggest you put a band that mixes the styles of electronica, rap, pop, rock, and jazz?

cardboard adolescent 05-22-2007 07:39 PM

general music :P

... or indie/alternative

PopIsDead 05-22-2007 07:40 PM

Then why not make avant-garde/experimental a sub-forum in the indie/alternative forum?
