I think that is a little harsh Howard. There was nothing wrong with his list because the thread is no longer what you think about how critics treat artist/bands and became more what artist/bands you liked/disliked. That being said their is no rule written in stone that you have to like everything thast's been ever recorded. You don't. I find him interesting because (I suppose) there is some criteria he has to how he rates bands, even though most people don't agree, maybe he has standard we don't understand.

And not to mention there's a bit of irony to it because his under-rated bands are no better than his over-rated bands.

i mean I don't like avant-garde but does that give me a right to piss on all of them?

It's quite a ludicrous statement considering the scope of the genre where it's just been generalised. To make one about all bands when that possibly can not be reviewed or experienced is quite void. Especially when bands tend to differ from aspect to aspect, it isn't very credible. So pinpointing a few aspects representing thousands of thousands of bands with styles melded together to form myriads of creative sounds based on a few you've come across is pretty ignorant. Unless its gone right to the basis (which can still not occur in every band).

If I said all blues is ****, wouldn't you think whatever the reason was, it couldn't substantiate because my experience doesn't amount to the depth of my statement? Really, would I know what I'm taking about?

I don't think Howard was being harsh at all. The newbie that stated heavy metal was overrated, actaully made a point of saying ALL heavy metal was overrated and not just some, meaning he probably knows fuck all about the genre.

might I also add that even if I don't qualify bits of dialogue and extracts of found noise as music, some people might think that's the pinnacle of artistry? (avant-garde/experimental)

do I then automatically view these people as some sort of elitist listeners living in their ivory tower?

no, I give them the benefit of the doubt and have tried (unsuccessfully) getting into Stockhausen

What kind of substantiating can you even do on music? Every person on this site is elitist about their taste

I don't like Korn because they play a downtune and sing about balls and tongues in the same song. Does this really make you feel better than "Korn sucks"?

What do you mean by "substantiating on music"?
