Donny Osmond still has a career and he played Bieber's gimmick when they were of the same age.
Ditto Michael Jackson (Barring the whole 'being dead' situation)

Fair enough. I don't enjoy Bieber so I tend to ignore him. "enjoyable pop fluff" must not be my thing.

I think one of the biggest signs of ignorance possible on this Forum, is coming in and just blasting whoever is a current mainstream success with no proper reasons.

This isn't YouTube, we aren't here to unanimously decide that Justin Bieber 'sukz donkey dickz!!!!(one)!!!' we're here to discuss music, and in this case 'Overrated artists'

Somebody please explain to me how Justin Bieber is overrated.
Note: Commercial sales and widespread acclaim do not go hand-in-hand.

I was gunna say. Beiber cannot be over rated because not many who truly love music really rates him.

Justin Bieber has a good voice, and he can play a few instruments. But the songs he sings are fluff. Only if he begins writing quality songs will he deserve much acclaim.

The most overrated band for me would have to be U2. Their music is just so boring to me. Again, this is all opinions and preferences, so if you like U2 by all means enjoy it. They are not a popular band for no reason, just overrated is all.

Indeed he can. Out of curiosity I looked up an acoustic version of a song he did in public (like a school or something). Again, the hate far exceeds the fandom, and I think it's a shame people have to verbally announce their dislike of pop to justify their taste in music.

It depends how you judge it I suppose. Most people go by what rock critics say even though I think their judgement can be just as influenced by what is thought to be hip as popular opinion can be. If somebody sells records there is something good about it somewhere in a least some song they have done. Criticisms often come from people just trying to be hip and saying what they think is cool, but I think it's far cooler not to prejudge any kind of music and to just listen to it on it's own terms. It's also easy to damn a genre by just listening to a few weaker things and saying all of it is crap, even though that just shows ignorance.

Pop music can have feeling to it as well, there can be some well crafted songs. And it doesn't matter if a singer writes all of or any of a song, singing it brings their own interpretation to it as well. And while some pop music may be lighter, there is nothing wrong with that. Everybody at some time in their life will want something lighter and not heavy. It's nice to have variety. And the purpose of music is enjoyment and to be entertained and that can be done on both a complex and simple level.
