I recently played this album for the first time in what must be 10 years and my opinion hadn't changed. 25% class and 75% filler which is probably how I would describe Primus on the whole. They have done some damn catchy stuff but all that bass noodling just gets on my tits after a while.

I feel the same way about Primus and Claypool's noodlery within the band.I actually bought that album the day it was released and I remember That it didn't hold my interest for very long.

However, some of his side projects (Oysterhead, Fearless Flying Frog Brigade) Have him quite a bit more subdued in flippity-flippity-flop dept. As a bonus Frog Brigade has been known to play Pink Floyd's Animals from start to finish live, although they've never managed to do it the few times I've seen them.

Could you recommend me something from one of their side projects?

Dunno if you were aware, but the leading talent Peter Hayes learned at the foot of Anton Newcombe.

I tried getting into BRMC a bit but my prejudices of comparison invariably led me to the sentiment that even Howl was never nearly as good as the heyday of the Brian Jonestown Massacre.

Take It from the Man! absolutely shits over anything Peter Hayes has performed on since...

Oysterhead's The Grand Pecking Order is really good. Oysterhead is a supergroup that went underneath a lot of people's radar and consists of Claypool on bass and vocals, Trey Anastasio from Phish on Guitar, and vocals and Stewart Copeland from The Police on drums. I will say that there are times where the album seems to be deciding whether or not it's a phish album or a Primus album, instead of something original in it's own right, but when the three find their groove it's amazing.

I also am pretty partial to Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerel's Highball With the Devil. I think it takes everything that most have come to know and love about Primus without so much of the cheesy schtick that has gotten in the way of a lot of their music.

I have to say I feel the exact opposite about his output. Stuff like Oysterhead is far, far too noodly to me, but Primus (and Sausage) has the good songwriting generally. And Sailing the Seas of Cheese is my favorite Primus album.

Amazing stoner Metal. Some of the coolest, thickest, most bad ass guitar tones I've ever heard. I love this. So much.

Very dark, creepy black metal. Thanks very much to Stu for this, it's ****ing fantastic, especially the opening track.

it is really starnge to listen to the progression of Albin's music over the years under the name Der Blutharsch....starting off as a seminal "martial industrial" band....primarily using samples of speeches, classical music with a strong militant drum beat.....and slowly morphing into a neo psychedelic band....at first it was a little unsettling....but i must admit i am really happy with what they've become

glad you liked this album.....i highly suggest looking into Der Blutharsch and the Infinite Church of the Leading Hand's debut full length album which came a couple weeks ago (and came nicely wrapped in gold leaf ).....the same as this but without the darkness that Aluk Todolo brought to this album....also Seven That Spells which is part of them....amazing super fuzzed out psychedelic jam rock from Croatia!...good stuff

i have to agree with you all about my just kind of loss of interest in Primus.....for years they really were one of my favorite bands.....but even with this new album they released this year i just came to the realization that its just not for me anymore.....personally i hold Frizzle Fry in high regards still....but like others said....it only takes a few songs till i'm just tired of it

i never looked in The Flying Frog Brigade.....but i definitely enjoyed that Oysterhead album when it came out

i have to agree with you on this....i do love those first two BRMC albums....but they pale in comparison to the mental genius that Newcombe had in the early days of BJM.....and the simple fact that he recorded many of those albums 100% by himself....and then had a "touring" band is just amazing

with the rave reviews this is getting here i just had to look into it.....going to load it up and drive to San Francisco today.....seems like a good album to help ease the stress of traffic

Hyatari - The Light Carriers

Great Drone Doom album, at times feels like your skull's having a sledgehammer applied to it, but they provide respites with masterfully-executed tonal shifts. There's some Sludge and Industrial influences thrown in to the mix as well, and it all comes together to create this single, throbbing mass. Excellent stuff.
