MuteMath's "Odd Soul"

Super energetic, synth-heavy indie rock. Really distinctive percussion. It's not the best drumming I've ever heard, but it's good, and the beat always stands out in the mix. I was recommended the band by an acquaintance. Pretty good stuff.

Gungor's "Ghosts Upon The Earth"

I literally couldn't put a genre to this if I wanted to. I can definitely point out parts of songs that are something akin to classical, jazz, country, folk, bluegrass, or ethereal piano-heavy pop music... but then Michael Gungor comes out of nowhere and throws in electronics, or a drum machine, or an instrument that just doesn't belong for whatever genre he's decided to play and throws all preconceived notions out the window. The lyrics are intelligent, and full of things taken out of the Bible. Lyrical subjects include Biblical themes, vague allegories that could be taken several different ways, sex. I've been playing this album a WHOLE lot lately. Highly suggest it.

I love this album so much, I even bought it on vinyl. There's just something about it, something that soothes me after a really bad day. Nico's harmonium and vocals creepily craw up your back and wrap around your chest, slightly cold, but comforting. Oh, and then there's John Cale's arrangements of bells, violin, organ, and who knows what else.

Such a wonderful song.

^ Cracking album, my favourite Nico one too.

I'm digging the following:

Bailter Space - Vortura and Robot World

Two gems from a band that are fast becoming a favourite. Spacy, noisy, shoegazey - but with a very different approach it seems to almost any other band I've heard. Didn't notice it at first, but the more familiar I am with them the more their music seems to stand out from the other bands of this ilk. I dunno what's in the water down in New Zealand, but they've churned out some of the most distinctive and interesting music over the past 30 years. A remarkable amount of good bands for such a small population.

Lucio Battisti - Anima Latina

So much going on here, and it's all pure excellence. Kind of surprised this came out of 74, but I suppose that's why RYM's got it under "progressive pop" as well as psychedelic pop.

Drudkh - Eternal Turn of the Wheel (2012)

I knew if I was patient enough 2012 would deliver a metal album that's actually more than just "mediocre" or "good". I've liked Drudkh since their 2007 album Estrangement and while their last few albums have moved more towards an atmospheric black metal sound along the lines of Wolves at the Throne Room or Woods of Desolation, but the fact that they're not trying to be Agalloch is usually enough for me. The vocals aren't as raw on this one, however they still have the same aggression one would expect. It definitely cheered me up after the disappointing new Busdriver album.

North Sea Radio Orchestra - 'I a Moon'.

My mind is blown - I had no idea of where to start looking for this type of music (chamber/orchestral) and I just happened to stumble upon this album today. It is amazing...if anyone's seen the Ken Burns film The National Parks, this is essentially what the NSRO sound like (very folky, kinda baroquey). I love it...I'm on my 6th listen today.

After he passed away the band used his spoken poetry to release American Prayer. This is from that and is definitely Funk but with him they didn't really venture into that territory.

American Prayer is actually really damn good. I like it better than some of their other LP's, in fact.
