Default How much has your music taste changed over the years?

Well let's start this off with me.

I'm currently 17 and my favourite band is Sonic Youth.
I haven't joined the NME or emo bandwagon like most people I know
Yet I haven't let my taste be confined to an elitist music taste for example I still like bands like Iron Maiden and Red Hot Chili Peppers
Other bands I like are Dinosaur Jr, Pavement, Chemical Brothers, Primal Scream and The Fall

I must say though my taste in music has improved so much this decade. I only really properly showed an independant interest in music at the turn of the century getting into the popular rock, pop, nu metal bands at the time like Linkin Park and Blink 182. The first single I bought while I was still in Primary school was the Gorillaz 'Clint Eastwood' and first album 'Hybrid Theory'.

By 2001/2002, though with starting a new school I got into more of the indie music like stereophonics and oasis buying their latest albums at the time. Then the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Foo Fighters arrived with 'By the Way' and 'One By One' and I became big fans, at which time I predictably got into Nirvana. I also got into local band The Coral around this time after hearing their fun, quite psychedelic take on indie.

By 2004 I had moved away from bands like Linkin Park and my favourite bands if you'd asked me would probably be RHCP and Nirvana. I also got more into classic rock/metal and punk with Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Sex Pistols and The Clash being some of the obvious choices. By 2005 my music taste was still limited but expanding, I went to my first gig, Supergrass, and I got into more of the other 'grunge' bands I had previously overlooked like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains. I still wasn't into the latest indie music only liking a handful of bands like Bloc Party and Editors, whilst detesting bands like Franz Ferdinand and The Killers.

By the start 2006, however, I found Sonic Youth buying Daydream Nation in January quickly followed by Dirty and many more. I had found something finally which I could be proud of liking and with every record I bought by them I found something new to like which impressed me. This is when my music taste shaped to as it is now in May 2007. I got last.fm in February 2006 which gave me access to a lot more music information and recommendations which got into bands like Dinosaur Jr. and Pavement. By late last year and early this I had also started to enjoy electronic music with chemical brothers and Daft Punk (which I had first seen in the anime videos from 2001).

As it stands now I have mixed taste liking everything from Boards of Canada to Blur. I am quite ashamed how my taste in music effectively started in the dire straits of early 2000s, which looking back in my opinion was one of the worst times to like mainstream rock. I'm now trying to appreciate different types of music and get a better taste so I look forward to getting into more artists over the next few years!

I've written enough now haha now if anybody else wants to post theirs feel free. It could be a lot more interesting with people older than me who have been through more classic periods of music! (I'm hoping urban will enlighten us )

Ok I'm an old git but I have never lost my love of music and my tastes are constantly being expanded on but I have never lost interest in bands I still like what I was into over 20 years ago! I will try and be as brief as possible!

The first real music I got into was in 1986 (aged 14) and that was metal specifically IRON MAIDEN and SAXON. This then got me into THRASH METAL which was taking off big time METALLICA/MEGADETH/SLAYER all releasing seminal albums in 86. This in turn led me onto the U.K HARDCORE scene with bands like NAPALM DEATH and EXTREME NOISE TERROR, and then the U.S hardcore scene with bands like DRI/LUDI CHRIST/AGNOSTIC FRONT.

I looked the part then-long hair leather jacket etc, but I was also starting to get into the other side of rock-MARILLION/PINK FLOYD/BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST and also bands like TANGERINE DREAM and CLANNAD (quite chilled), and getting into these bands caused a lot of consternation with a lot of my harcore metaller friends whom I found to be quite narrowminded, so I cut my hair, ditched the jacket and said bye bye! although I retained my interest in Metal (this was approx 1990),.

For six or seven years I wasnt into any particular scene and did'nt follow the new batch of metal and flirted with the UK BRITPOP scene in the mid 90's. Things changed in 1988 when a friend in a new job gave me a dancechillout CD and i was hooked and got into stuff like NIGHTMARES ON WAX/MASSIVE ATTACK/JOSE PADILLA/CAFE DEL MAR series/UNDERWORLD, and also reggae and DUB was surfacing on my listening radar-BLACK UHURU/BURNING SPEAR/MAD PROFESSOR/LEE scratch PERRY etc.

In 2002 I manged to get in touch with my old schoolfriend with whom I shared a love of metal and this reignited a love of this genre so bands like DISTURBED/GOJIRA/LAMB OF GOD are listened to.

Finally over the past year I have been getting into some HIP HOP- A TRIBE CALLED QUEST/ROOTS MANUVA/PUBLIC ENEMY/THE HERBALISER/THE ROOTS and through these very boards am now just starting to listen to POST ROCK and quality SKA PUNK .

So there you go they have changed dramatically, but I still like all the old stuff I listened to-obviously there are a few bands that dont stand the test of time though!

I listen to as many different genres as I possibly can and love finding new music. I can honestly say I will listen to anything once If someone loans me some music.

Man great idea for a thread!

1997-2000
I spent most of my childhood singing along with Robbie Williams (using a roll of tinfoil as a microphone)!

2001
Started getting into other music. First of all, Greenday. I loved Greenday, and a lot of their old stuff is actually good (check out Kerplunk and anything up to Warning). Then once again like everyone else I started to listen to Metallica, and I stayed listening to them for about two years, don't listen to them anymore but I did see them live last summer and they rocked!

2002-2003
I started listening to power metal like a mad mutha****a. Bands like Rhapsody (of Fire), Hammerfall, Stratovarius and then instrumental guitar music like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen (shut up!).

2004-2005
Started listening to Megadeth a lot more, and they became my favorite band (still are)! And a few heavier bands like Wintersun and Arch Enemy, both excellent!

2006 onwards

I still listen to loads of power metal like DragonForce, Rhapsody, Edguy, Sonata Acrtica and Angra. But I'm more into the likes of Katie Melua, Stevie Wonder, Travis, KT Tunstall, John Mayer, Manic Street Preacher and Muse!

My music taste has changed, and there's a lot more that I couldn't remember!

I think my tastes just keep expanding. As a teenager in the early 90s I was into a lot of electro-industrial and goth type stuff like Thrill Kill Kult, Skinny Puppy, Ministry, NIN, KMFDM, Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie and the Banshees. As well as everything from Godflesh to the English Beat to Primus to Bob Mould to Suicidal Tendencies to REM to Faith No More and Mr. Bungle.

In my early 20s I discovered jazz, latin music and african music as well as delving deeper into electronic music, punk and metal.

By my late 20s I was into everything from experimental noise to flamenco to hip-hop to kraut rock to tropicalismo to funk and disco.

I'm 30 now and I hope I only continue to branch out the older I get.

over the years my tastes have shifted drastically, but for the most part, music i enjoyed in the past, i still tend to enjoy. i think i started off with rap - commercial rap at that, like dmx and method man and all that, back in high school roughly 10 years ago. then i got into metal - slayer, pantera, and all that. at some point along the way i discovered underground hip-hop, like aesop rock, atmosphere, el-p, busdriver, etc - got back into metal and the more brutal stuff like death and grind. i've also gotten into a lot of weird/out-there indie type stuff, and i definitely enjoy older stuff too. i've listened to pretty much everything at one point, except for country. isn't that the genre must people tend to say they dont like when they claim to like "almost everything" though? sorry, not exactly a timeline of my musical tastes or anything.

Well, throughout the 90s I was surrounded by conflicting musical influences: my parents, both well-trained pianists; and my older brother--the classic troubled youth.

I got a taste of classical music from my parents: everything from Bach to Debussy. There were many other genres I was exposed to from them as well: latin and tangos, bluegrass and folk, jazz and the blues, and choir. But from my brother, I got a taste of hard rock: from AC/DC to Nirvana to Green Day to Metallica. At first, I was only into classical, etc. I liked Blink 182 and Smashmouth, but that was as far as my rock repertoire went.

For a while, I was even into pop. *shudders* This is one of the things I am most ashamed about. I had a Britney Spears album, and even the Backstreet Boys.

But let's think about happy thoughts right now.

In 2002, my brother died, and thereafter, I started taking more interest in his genres. I got really into Green Day and Linkin Park, and other pop punk bands (Sum 41, Good Charlotte, etc.). But in 2006, I sustained a serious knee injury, confining me to my basement for pretty much the whole time. I spent my time exploring new music for hours on end. This was when music truly became important to me in my life. I was into everything: oldies (Sonatra, the Beach Boys), jazz (Dave Brubeck Quartet, Glen Miller), indie rock (Death Cab for Cutie, Elliot Smith), broadway musicals (the Music Man, Phantom of the Opera), and just strange bands (Beck, Ween).

At the time, what caught my attention most was Beck. This was mainly because, like me, Beck was into all different kinds of genres. He's been described as the most eclectic musician of the 90's, and I thought that he was the best musician of the modern day.

But I didn't know anything about his influences (which were myriad). So, I decided to go way back to the beginning, to try to find where all the different genres of pop-punk, heavy metal, indie rock came from. My parents, aside from classical music, also had a wide array of Beatles albums, and so I started there. This led me to other British invasion bands like the Hollies, the Kinks, the Who, etc. But this wasn't good enough. Where did all those bands come from? So then I found two musicians in particular that helped my task greatly: Elvis Pressley, and Chuck Berry. It became clear to me through the literature available (in other words, i-tunes), that these two were the first rock and roll musicians.

Having indeed found the beginnings of rock, I thought that that would satisfy me, but it didn't. I now had the very start, but I still didn't know what was in between. There was a 20 year gap between the 60s and the 90s, and I knew nothing about it.

Well, I had a friend who, at the same time, was in the middle of a Pink Floyd daze, and he helped me open a window into the 70s and 80s. From Pink Floyd I discovered many of their contemporaries of the 60s and 70s: the Doors, Rush, Queen, etc. Queen were very interesting to me: they had good, intelligent music, but something about their approach seemed so half-way to me. So I went in search of something that Queen had hit on, but hadn't gone all the way with.

In search of this quality, I rummaged through my brother's old CDs, and there I found AC/DC's Stiff Upper Lip. This, being one of their worse albums, didn't satisfy, but now I knew what I was looking for: that hard rock sound.

From here I tore through i-tunes' supply of 70s hard rock: Thin Lizzy, Van Halen, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin.

Led Zeppelin was, as I soon found out, the biggest musical revelation I had come across. There was something about their music that I couldn't find, but I couldn't stop looking for. And my thirst for their music wasn't helped at all by the fact that neither i-tunes or napster carry any of their music.

To this day, Led Zeppelin remains my favorite band. I listen to their music night and day, and it still sounds as fresh every time. I accept that one day, it will cease to consume me, but I also know that there will never be another band like Led Zeppelin for me.

Although Led Zeppelin was my primary interest, I still looked into other bands a little. I just kind of skipped over the 80s because there wasn't anything that interesting during that time (I think the 80s just spoiled rock music, and there were few quality bands in that decade). So in the 90s, I focused on what, to me, was what hard rock had mutated into: grunge. I loved Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Smashing Pumpkins, and I still consider Nirvana to be one of the best bands of all time.

But recently, a band called Wolfmother (you've probably heard of them) caught my attention. I liked their style (mostly because they're a Led Zeppelin revivalist band), but more importantly, they introduced me to a genre that emerged in the late 80s and early 90s: stoner metal. From here I found a band called Queens of the Stone Age, and I fell in love. I still think that they're the best band around today.

And so that's where I stand now: consumed by Led Zeppelin, but I still enjoy moments of QOTSA.

Damn, that was the longest post yet.

I started off listening to ****ty pop music like Savage Garden....mainly just Savage Garden, but there were probably some others that I can't recall. After listening to crappy pop for a while my brother got me in to Dave Matthews Band and I was hooked on them, they were basically the only band I listened to for about a year.

After the whole DMB thing I decided to explore other musics and got into U2 as well as bands that my dad liked: The Beatles, Pink Floyd....., but that didn't last too long because after that my friends got me into all this local metalcore stuff so I started listening to stuff like Underoath, Norma Jean and so on. That phase lastes the longest out of all of them.

Then I joined here and you fine fellows introduced me to Emo and Hardcore which I liked for a while but have since moved on to mainly listening to Folk and Indie.

I started out listening to The Eagles when I was 2 years old. Take it Easy was my favorite song. Then when I was 4 or 5 I got into boy band pop like Backstreet Boys, N' Sync, etc. Then I listened to practically no music for like 4 years.

Then when I was in 4th grade I started to get into commercial hip-hop and R@B along with rock bands like GC, All-American Rejects, you know the stupid stuff. After that i went into a country phase, in which I heavily listened to Alan Jackson, Tim Mcgraw, etc. Then I went on to listen to no music for about a year.

Then when I was in 6th grade I got into radio metal like Disturbed, SOAD, Staind. I also listened to a lot of grunge. I was in this phase for awhile. Finally last year, April 19th (yes I have it on my calendar,) I was introduced to Metalcore and the band As I Lay Dying, which after that my bias on music with harse vocals completely went away. After that in about August I stopped listening to Metalcore, because it was too repeditive for me, and I started to listen to In Flames, which got me into Death Metal.

Shortly after that I was intoduced to Opeth from a guy on another forum, which after that I started to understand that music that isn't original or complex is just plain boring. After that I sprawled out across many genres, which is pretty much the phase I am in now. I have given up videogames so that I can discover new bands and now I am a music addict.

age very young ti'll about 16 - I listened to basically just alice in chains, rush, floyd, zepplin and whatever other random ass 60's/70's records my mom had.

16-19 - First it was just whatever I saw on tv. ThenI got the internet and got on a site called audio galexy and I was looking for bands and then it would tell what other bands sounded like them. Also around that time was my first metalcore/hardcore show.(from autumn to ashes, every time I die, throwdown, cassius clay hahaha) and listened to pretty much nothing but metalcore and or hardcore. I also had gotten into pg.99 early on but not a lot until later.

19-now - Everything. After doing a lot of acid I decided music was amazing and I'd give everything a chance. Maybe it's made me more elitest haha but whatever. First it was bands from the dc emo scene and then it moved on to avant-garde **** like godspeed and the millions of side projects they had. Then I started to listen to more rock oriented stuff and got really into a lot of no wave and noise bands from the 70's like art bears and henry cow. And as of lately it's been a lot of electronic and shoegazey **** like slowdive and m83 and even some stuff with more rythym to it like battles or dj shadow and also a lot of free jazz.

edit: oh and last.fm is the best site ever if you want to find new music.
