you're thinking about Cher and her single 'Believe'. that's where the current modern autotune fad kicked off and spread out to R&B then onto rap.

if any old school rap dude was sounding similar to that it was because they were using a vocoder. which does provide a similar effect but still requires a modicum of talent and ability to pull off smoothly.

the worse thing about Bungle's influence is that it seems to have inspired a bunch of relatively talented kids into ditching their creativity so they could be mimics instead. rather than recognizing the greatness of Bungle's ability to weave a myriad of genres fluidly into one piece and finding their own scraps of mainstream styles that could be folded into a new dress, they play circus funk. great. and your vocalist creates lyrics using Penthouse magazine and a thesaurus... fabulous.
Bungle and FNM were the first bands which came to mind for me... nu-metal owes its basslines to Billy Gould.

Pantera is definitely a candidate - it's them and Exhorder who spawned loads of tough-guy groove metal bands.

As much as I like Rush, I can't help but think that they had a lot of influence on some terrible prog metal. Not just because of the virtuosity, but because they were really more metallic sounding than a lot of the prog bands of the time.

I don't mind that Maiden inspired a slew of cheesy heavy metal bands as it's only natural as that's what was popular at the time. What bothers me is all of the power metal which followed, and the fact that despite virtually every single power metal vocalist imitating Bruce Dickinson, none of them come remotely close to him... most of them aren't even close to being listenable

Oh, and I almost forgot about Joy Division. I never really liked Interpol, let alone the thousand other bands trying to capitalise on the sound.

Cher's song seems a little early to be included in this fad. Didn't it really start with T-Pain's music, and then Kayne West produced a few albums with him or something?

It's not a bad little tool to use. It's a bit like reverb in the 1980s... hopefully musicians will get the message that it just sounds dull when overused.

not really. Cher's single marked the first time autotune was being used as an effect and it spread from there. seems to me autotuned vocals have been a staple of club music, since 1999. admittedly i stopped going to clubs a few years ago but considering the amount of complaints the effect is still getting i think it's safe to say it's still rather predominant.

It's weird to me. I would have said that Velvet Underground and Jethro Tull WERE crap bands inspired by other artists.

Oh. I was talking more from a hip hop / pop perspective though. It only seems to me like I've been hearing it on the radio since 2006 or so.

/facepalm.

I'm going to be gentle and asume you're confusing The Velvet Underground with something else though. Red Velvet Revolver maybe?

Who were some of the bands that these two were inspired by?

I don't think that's really their point, their aim is basically to be as vile, degrading and as brutal as possible. Musicianship and songwriting wouldn't exactly be their strong point. But yeah they are pretty boring and sound like they're trying to hard to be controversial. As regards bands they've influence it's an impossible job trying to tell them apart.
