If you start listening to it and you don't like it. Skip to the last track which was actually his first single, "King without a crown" I'm pretty sure you will at least enjoy that one.

RVCA 01-31-2011 05:09 PM

Why would you send someone something if you only expect them to enjoy one track...?

djchameleon 01-31-2011 06:35 PM

because I know he's picky and if he doesn't enjoy the first couple of tracks he might just disregard it but the best track is at the end.

s_k 01-31-2011 06:43 PM

I zapped through it, I will listen more closely soon :).
It's not too bad, but maybe too much of a hip hop voice (...).
I generally don't really like reggae that sounds modern, not even if it's by 'classics' like The Scientist, King Tubby or Lee Perry. It just has this modern 80's sound to it.
Nevertheless, I wil listen more closely.
First thing it reminded me of was Dub Trio by the way, because of the rock influences.

For TheFolkSlave

I just fell in love with this album like 30 minutes ago and felt the need to send it to someone. It's absolutely gorgeous, there is so much emotion going on with her vocals, yet they are so beautiful at the same time. It's pretty much just guitars but it's slightly dreamy and oh so perfectly simple. I feel you would definitely like this.

S - I'm Not As Good At It As You

S is the solo project of Jenn Ghetto (formerly of Carissa's Wierd). This is a great sadcore album with tons of emotion. I listened to this all the time after I broke up with my girlfriend. Love this album.

Man I can't believe how fast this thread moves...it makes my head spin. That's pretty awesome, it's a great thread.

I would participate because it's pretty awesome but my life isn't like it was - things are different lately. I haven't downloaded as much, I've been focusing on certain styles & artists, and I'm content with that. Very content, in fact. I feel like right now in my life I can't have any negativity. Not because I'm sad, quite the opposite. I've been in some of my greatest moods ever and that is why I've been listening to mostly 60s psych pop, soul, funk, etc. and it's just awesome. I'm amassed quite a bit of this stuff in the past few years, and while I am still digging deeper/further, I'm content revisiting all the stuff I have and playing it over and over, letting it sink deeper into my soul.

I don't know why I felt this was the right place to say this. Maybe because I love the idea of this thread so much I just wanted to say that, but explain why it doesn't feel right for me to participate right now. I'm also spending less time here and trying to spend less online in general, so even giving stuff to others is just too time-consuming right now. Yet at the same time, I'm so in love with just about everything I'm playing lately that maybe I should spread it.

:)

TheFolkSlave sent me this. I have to give this one another listen when I'm not really tired, but I did like it a lot, she has a really pretty voice and it is full of emotion, they lyrics are really sad, but I really enjoy them and the music wasn't overpowering so the emotion in the vocal can shine. 8.5/10

bob. 02-02-2011 01:21 PM

ok so here are 3 out of the seven i have on my plate to review

from James:

Ścianka - Dni Wiatru
http://artrock.pl/cimage/280__1215501573.jpg

very interesting album....it starts off with waves of dark ambience and then sprints into very experimental rock and then returns to what seems to me to be a noisy psychotic rant (not knowing any Polish.....but his voice is very passionate and fierce)....i can honestly say that i've never heard anything quite like this...the opening song has this odd sense of feeling like the woman in 'Silence of the Lambs' clawing away at the walls of her entrapment as Buffalo Bill screams at her to put the lotion in the fucking basket....and at the same time it is warm and inviting....honestly i feel all the songs accomplish this sort of duel feel....amazing album James....thanks

from Violent & Funky:

Jawbox - For Your Own Special Sweetheart
http://blogs.villagevoice.com/music/...Sweetheart.jpg

although i've heard this album many times before it was suggested....i have to admit that for the most part my Jawbox phase is over and i have not really sat down and listened to them in well over five years....so this was almost new as my ears are a bit different these days

this album being their major label debut but still really packing a punch....by far 'Savory' is one of the greatest songs ever written for this type of music at least and 'Motorist' is up there also....the opening rack of this album is very reminiscent of Jawbox's frist two releases....kind or raw and very melodic yet completely in your face....like a cute kitten screaming at you...you just can't help but smile and say "awwww".....this continues throughout the entire album with one difference....there are some real wonderful hints as to what will become of these players.....this as much an abrasive take on Burning Airlines as it is an evolution of Jawbox....still an amazing album after so many years.....thanks Violent & Funky for rekindling an old love affair

from dankrsta:

Gastr Del Sol - The Serpentine Similar
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_nsCT3EFoxK...milar-1993.jpg

so i started listening to this this morning with only your words to guide what i might think of it....my first thought about four minutes into the first track was post rock huh?....seems more like post math rock and why does it remind me of Bastro?....well same lead player....as both Bastro and Squirrel Bait....so again you've made me wonder "where the fuck have i been?! ":)....so we have David Grubbs and Jim O'Rourke! on the same album....this just reeks meticulous perfection....this album resembles so much of what i already really enjoy and yet sounds like nothing that i really have....the entire album is as complex as it is soothing and has wonderful hints of the roots of the musicians previous works....great album that requires numerous listens :)

Dystopia-The Aftermath

Bob described this as nihilistic punk. My wealth of knowledge on nihilism reaches as far as The Big Lebowski so I knew it was basically the belief in nothing. As for the reasoning and belief of the culture I am clueless. So I have done a little research. Off to wikipedia I go, wondering what wonders will befall me while this album is puking up some of the ugliest crust I have heard right into my earholes.(ew, in a good way)

So after some research and lots of big scary foreign words i can't pronounce, I see that nihilists believe that there is no meaning or purpose in life and it's very complicated stuff. It's interesting because it's one viewpoint I have never heard a musical artist supporting. Normally artists love to share these sorts of things with you and if I do know any nihilistic artists they definetly don't throw it around. Back to the music, it just gets better and better, really heavy and DIY Crust, sounds genuinly angry and not manafactured angry like many other Punk related bands of this sort. Favourite track was Population Birth Control. Amazing song, cool lyrics and as horrible as you want Crust/Sludge stuff to be!

CanWll Corfe and Pedestrian your reviews are coming.

Empyrium - Weiland

Empyrium is a neofolk band from Germany that started out by playing symphonic folk/doom metal. Later thay changed their style to neofolk. The band was active during 1994 – 2002. They reformed in 2010.
Weiland was their last album and in my opinion their best work. This is a really great neofolk album that was hugely influental to me when I was younger. I hope you like it.

Bongwater - Double Bummer (1988)

I really have a feeling you're going to enjoy this great, a bit forgotten band that existed somewhere from the middle of the 80s to early 90s. Main players are Kramer, well known producer and a head of Shimmy Disc; and Ann Magnuson, actress and performance artist (you've surely seen her in the movie 'The Hunger' in the opening scene with David Bowie). The music is very eclectic, like alternative/psychedelic rock with a bit of noise and a lot of rantings of Ann Magnuson, very provocative and hilarious 'lyrics' (whole fun stories actually). I've been thinking what album to send you, but I decided to send you their first, huge, double album with a good 2h of music. Enjoy!

bob. 02-08-2011 02:10 PM

so here are two very different albums for Charlemagne:

Fugazi - Red Medicine

http://www.gayadesign.com/wp-content...edmedicine.jpg

out of what is practically a perfect discography this album "is the cheese"....first off i really think that Guy sticks out on this album....through the years i've always gravitated towards his songs on Fugazi albums...not that i dislike Ian's songs...i just feel more with Guy's....and on this album he just explodes with cynical lyrics and his over energetic style....plus this is when the band started experimenting a little bit more with sound and noise....i hope it's a great introduction to an amazing band

Psychic TV - Allegory & Self

http://img15.nnm.ru/2/2/0/f/f/218eff...fcdceeea3c.jpg

this was a changing moment for this band which tends to fall under the umbrella "industrial" tag...this album is about as industrial as a barren desert....this is more along the lines of LSD laced experimental pop music...with a bit of a flare for 60s psychedelic....although there are still tracks on here that are pure PTV...animalistic, sexual, chaotic and more like cultish worship songs.....i honestly think you may enjoy this....

DoctorSoft 02-08-2011 02:50 PM

bob... send me something... please?

bob. 02-08-2011 03:50 PM

a couple for theuglyorgan:

Swervedriver - Mezcal Head

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_M_jjIJQmP6...r+-+mezcal.jpg

so in a pm theuglyorgan told me he was leaning towards some good indie al la The Flaming Lips....for some reason the first thing that popped in my head was Swervedriver's amazing 2nd album (probably because it came out the same year as Flaming Lips immortal Transmissions From the Satellite Heart)....this album is pretty amazing....in the fact that it incorporates shoegaze, scratchy noise, experimental, and classic pop....it really is an all around great album....and honestly this is essential 90s alternative rock.... concentrate on the lyrics of Blowin' Cool :)

The Black Heart Procession - Amore Del Tropico

http://betterpropaganda.com/images/a...ession_480.jpg

so these guys...if you haven't guessed by their name....are a bit on the dark side...but still this is some amazingly good pop music...with great lyrics, kind of avant-garde instrumentation, great pop chords, and again the darkness within the lyrics and music....and the best part is that this album is in fact a murder mystery rock opera :)....so listen to the entire album and see if you can figure out who the murderer is :)

DoctorSoft 02-08-2011 04:06 PM

Thank you!

bob. 02-10-2011 11:43 AM

a few for ThePhanastasio:

sorry i really could not decide which i wanted to send so i decided to send all four

looking through your charts on last.fm i noticed that you seem to really enjoy strong female singer songwriters.....her are two of my favorites

starting with....

Jarboe - Anhedoniac
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_c43FE1y8uX...Anhedoniac.jpg
Anhedoniac: One who is unable to experience pleasure.

Jarboe was a long time member of the pivotal band Swans....what was great about her is that she brought a strong and powerful female energy to a very male dominated masculine sound....something she continued in her solo career

Anhedoniac is her third solo release and has been and will likely always be my favorite....this album reaches straight into your soul....an absolute exploration of the beauty of pain and despondency.....one thing is for sure....she is in complete control

Lydia Lunch - Queen Of Siam
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_CmtzzbNoNb...400/157863.jpg
again a different twist on the typical female singer songwriter....but one i really think you are going to love

this is Lydia Lunch's 1980 debut and it is a five star album all the way....the lyrics are witty, cynical, and damn right perfect....something that Miss Lunch has never had a problem with....the music is very eclectic....taking form her scummy 'No Wave' roots while also incorporating some really groovy jazz sounds.....

and then to further your education of my beloved Current 93

Current 93 - Imperium
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

this amazing album released in 1987 sparked the beginning of a new era for Current 93....and is still i think considered one of their greatest achievements...before this album their albums concentrated on tape delays and loops, noise, and bellowing chants of suffering....creating wonderful ritualistic albums....with Imperium David Tibet concentrates on two things....minimalism and repetition....while first doing what would become the staple of all Current 93 albums.....his lyrical prowess

Current 93 - Earth Covers Earth
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KcJj6wN1MA...400/curr89.jpg

out of all the album released by this band....Earth Covers Earth speaks to me the most.....every lyric on this album is an example of beautiful poetry....actually my favorite track (and possibly my favorite track by the band itself) "Hourglass For Diana' is a poem by seventeenth century poet John Hall and has such a musically building property of both guitar and violin that by the end of the song you have a true sense of empowerment as David bellows to you "How Art Thou Nothing When Thou Art Most Of All!"....its a feeling i still get every time i listen to this song

for the most part this album is what Current 93 becomes....with concentration of traditional folk music and lyrics concentrating on the forthcoming alpha/omega.....this is my favorite time for them....the group itself was comprised of so many great people....funny enough in the liner notes it credits Boyd Rice for scary voices and evil smiles :)

James 02-10-2011 11:55 AM

Both good choices! Here's a trivial bit for you: Imperium was actually, according to a book of Indie Hits in The 80's, C93's only album to go into the Top 30 Indie Albums in August, 1987 - For a week, but it was in there. I think it was planned to be part of a 2 album concept wth Nurse With Wound recording the other album, but there was so much to do possibly, and that concept went to Thunder Perfect Mind instead. The construction of the album is good: On one side the epic title track's dreamy/nightmarish sounds (Owning the vinyl, some samples in it play at 45 RPM while some others possibly are played at 78) and the other side's Folk edge.

Earth Covers Earth is my favorite of the two.

You are right, despite my punk-influenced leanings I haven't tried nearly enough hardcore. I have been meaning to get Bad Brains for quite a while, and this might be the kick in the rear I needed.

To be honest, I'm not sure if hardcore is melodic enough for me, or at least this album. I didn't really care for the first four tracks, But starting with one of my personal standouts, 'You're Mistake' (the first one), there is a nice run of catchy tunes. It kinda tapers off for me again though.

Thanks for the recommendation, Bob! You still have one of my favorite tastes on this forum, even if this was a slight miss! :)

That Agnostic Front album 'Victim in Pain' is excellent. I've only heard it as a standalone, not meshed with the other one. I'm no expert on hardcore, but of what I've heard that's one of the best 15 min. of loud, fast and furious. Pretty much perfect, especially being so short. It's over before it starts. Just great!

Hopefully neither of you have this already but I think it's something you'd both really like. Truart is a one man Ukrainian band featuring heavy martial beats, odd samples, noise and... accordion. There's definitely a strong industrial/neo-folk influence on this album, which is why it made me think of you two. Anyway, I hope you like it.

This is great. I listened to it several times and I already knew from the start, from the first song that I was gonna play it often. As far as the martial industrial and neofolk go, this kind of totally fresh addition to the genre really hits the right spot for me. The same thing happened with this relatively new Italian apocalyptic/neofolk band The Green Man, I ended up loving it much more than a lot of the more 'conventional' neofolk (by that I mean, under a very strong Death In June influence). Like this Italian band which brought a Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavor to the sound, Truart brings a very distinct Eastern European feel and color especially with the accordion. It's really no wonder I ate it up so easily :). But, it's not just the accordion, this distinct vibe is even more felt in the contrast of high energy and general upbeat-ness on one hand, and some deep melancholy on the other. There's also the contrast between beautiful solemnity and hypnotic catchy-ness. The first song 'Sky Over the Berlin' has it all and it's definitely my favorite on the album. But what can I say about 'Le Peuple Ouvrier', the opening melody of the pipe(?) sounds like it could belong in some Serbian folk song, that is until those heavy martial beats kick in...very catchy and danceable. 'Le Capitalisme' is another favorite, accordion really shines here adding this carefree, but melancholic bohemian vibe to the strict driving beat. Well, if I mention more favorites I will end up mentioning every track. And they are all good. I think I'm gonna check out more albums by this guy. Thanks, great recommendation.

Jawbreaker.....great music with amazing good and poetic lyrics....out of their four albums this is my favorite....enjoy

Well, this is exactly what you said, good punk rock. It's fun, catchy and incredibly uplifting. That's certainly how it starts, with first couple of songs that are some good pop punk. And then it goes into some daydreaming. The best song for me is definitely 'Ashtray Monument', because it has both, beautiful, dreamy melody, slightly off and a fast, noisy rocking. Everything is slightly off here and that makes it even better. Reminded me of a more poppy Husker Du. 'Condition Oakland' is also very good. This one made me think of Dinosaur Jr for some reason. I think it's the riffs and the quick switching between melancholy and energy. This middle part of the album is the strongest, imo. But, beside those mentioned songs, I also liked 'Ache' and 'West Bay International'. Overall, pretty good album. Thanks!

Hop Along - Freshman Year

I definitely want to send you something because you have really interesting taste and always post something that I've never heard of but end up liking. I don't know how much pop you listen to, but this one is one of the best. It's really pretty unique for a pop record and its become one of my favorite records, the vocals are fantastic, and what she does with the voice and instrumentals is amazing.

Yes, you were right, this is very unique for a pop album, but I wouldn't really call it pop. This is folk, that's the impression it left on me, but it's certainly a unique one. A sweet girl with an even sweeter voice accompanied by acoustic guitar and a lot of quirky background noises, like some whistles, clapping, bells maybe?...She tries to stuff her long stories into the mostly short songs. It feels like she's always hurrying to tell as much as possible before the song is over. This creates some childlike charm, especially when I pay close attention to the lyrics. And they are so absurd on the first glance, but actually begin to make sense when she sings them. And it's the only way I could listen to this album at once, because it has a large number of very similar songs in structure, that it becomes obvious her stories are the point. That's where this irresistible charm comes from, and I would also say from the way she delivers them. It's just disarming. Thanks Charlemagne, I like it.
