To those that can listen 20 or 30 times straight, doesn't that burn you out on that album forever afterwards?

Sometimes, if a new album is good enough, I might go through it twice or three times, but I like to listen to different things throughout the day, keeps it interesting.

I try to listen to everything at least 5 times before I shelve it (if I didn't like it or it was just ok) and if I liked it or thought it was great it will be played more later on. The album I've listened to most is Smashing Pumpkins "Adore." I've listened to it full way through over 70 times.

So djchameleon, you don't listen to full albums? Don't you ever miss the consistencey and focus a full album can deliever as opposed to songs scattered from different artists here and there?

Nope, I think you missed part of what I said. I will listen to a full album once but then after that I find it hard to. Not all albums are delivered in a nice and neat package where you may miss the concept of it if you just listen to a single here or there.

I started out listening to music purely through singles and I didn't get into album listening til I was older.

Now, I listen to it once to hear all of the songs that the album has to offer and I cherry pick the tracks that standout to me and have an impact instead of forcing myself to listen to a whole album and having to deal with filler tracks.

Sometimes it does. It's not as though I hate to hear the album again, I just don't put it on as much as I used to. So be it. I don't dwell on it, I just enjoy it.

And sometimes it doesn't. I've listened to Boxer 150 times since last March, Hissing Fauna 90 times since this March, and I still put them both on regularly.

I looked back through my listening stats for stuff in i-tunes, it appears that the core group of albums I like have between 15 and 25 listens.

well when listening to something new, I will listen once in order and then usually put it on shuffle... yeah, one album on shuffle. I do it all the time. :y so I dunno. it's pretty rare that I listen to stuff in order... except I've been doing it a bit more often lately.

but if I really love something, I can listen to it... I dunno, at least 10 times(overall, it's usually not perfect since normally shuffle) within a relatively short period of time. /shrug

There are some that I listen to constantly for a while, but then I get tired of them and have a break from them. If it's a classic album, then I will always go back to it after a few weeks or so.

It takes me between one to five listen throughs to decide if I like an album. But if I do end up liking the album as a whole, if it's perfect, if it doesn't tire by 10 listen throughs I'll probably be listening to it for years...
