It's a measly 45 minutes, explanation?

Quote:
In fairness though, yeah, some albums with longer songs don't run as long as you might think. Let me look at Husker Du: yeah, see, over an hour. Elliott Smith as you say 52 mins so not as bad but for my own sanity I'm going to place the cutoff point at 50 mins. I think that's a reasonable time I can work with right now. Note that this is only until after October; I'll be a lot freer then but at the moment I've just too much to do.
So if 50 minutes is the cutoff, then J Dilla's record should be fine right?

Quote:
So: no albums, double or single, that have over twelve tracks and/or run over 50 mins, just for now. The list will be readjusted later when I get time. For now though, here is a track review...
And if seriously you still won't review it, can I get a refund and rec another album?

Troll music to my ears.

Oh, and...

I know you've listened to later Bathory, but I doubt you'd like their early, black metal work. Here's something transitional...

Spoiler for Full version:
And if you want to hear it with the epic intro.

And **** it. Might as well go all the way back and give you a glimpse of the debut.

None required. I'm just not prepared to sit through 31 tracks and make notes for them. Too much hassle.

No. I reserve the right to make exceptions, this is one.

You can. I'll be advising everyone of their right to that once I sort out the list.

You might be surprised. I've been listening to a lot of BM recently. Sort of don't hate it as much as I used to.

Expectations: Nothing less than perfect will do. I do not expect to be disappointed.

Nice sort of ambient feel, kind of almost like someone blowing on a glass, you know that kind of thing? Tappy little percussion with sort of oriental tones (bells?) and now here comes the guitar we all know and love. Punching out like a killer octopus fighting for its survival against a giant hammerhead (note: contact SyFy Channel with idea for monster movie), and now falling to some choral vocal synth with squidgy kind of effects before the guitar comes back in, some fine shredding.

Conclusion: Not as heavy as I like Plankton's music to be; sort of electronic in places, but still a cut above the rest always.

So, Love or Hate? You need to ask? This is a Love all day long.

Possibility of looking into the album: 100%
Thank you, my friend.

Title: Seams and Splices
Artiste: Grindy
Genre:
Taken from: n/a
Familiarity: Zero
Suggested by: Grindy

Expectations: I have no idea. I hope it's good though and I can say good things about it, as some of the music from members here has not been at all to my taste, and it's not nice to have to write negatively about the music of people you know.

Seems to be some violin opening, sharp, kind of Paganini style, rolling little drumbeat which is both at odds with and in perfect synch with the music. There's a piano now going a bit wild, but the main instrument seems to be the violin, which is being played very well, even if, as it may be, it's a synthesiser. The music does have that cut-in-cut-out style that I really loathe though (remember James Blake?) but it has a kind of racing quality to it that somehow puts me in mind of “Dave the Butcher” from Waits (shurrup Frown). I also get a sense of those old Tom & Jerry cartoons in some of it, don't ask me why. There's some bass in there too, but it's all a little too fragmented for my taste. Well played though, there's no doubt about that.

Now, these Soundcloud things always confuse me because when the tracks end another begins, but there's no detail and the graphic stops moving, so I'm going to assume it's not yours, Grindy? Starts with some sort of harpsichord sound? If yours ended on the uptempo violin then I think I got that right. If not, let me know.

Conclusion: Definitely not my thing, but still very good for what it is. The boy's got talent!

So, Love or Hate? I certainly didn't hate it, so let's give it some Love.

Disappointed about the Elliott Smith album, but I understand completely. Looking forward to the review whenever you get around to doing it.

Title: Exodus
Artiste: John Zorn
Genre: Avant-garde/Jazz
Taken from: The Dreamers, 2008
Familiarity: Zero, though Frown seldom shuts up about Zorn: even recced one of his albums for Metal Month III!
Suggested by: Well who do you think?

Expectations: It's jazz, so I think I'll hate it and yet I need to be a little open-minded, and a man who can release over half a thousand albums must at some point hit some common ground with the likes of me, so let's be optimistic huh? (Yeah but I'll probably hate it)...

Lovely bass intro, then some quite super guitar, doesn't sound very jazzy to me at all. I kind of think I might be listening to a Plankton ... no, no, it's Zorn alright. Sort of feels a little Carlos Santanaesque. Volume has dropped a little ... oh it's back now. Guess that's the problem with live recordings. Yeah, very Santana in fact. I like the kind of mideastern tinge he puts on the music, fits in with the title if it is meant to mean what I think it is. Great organ solo by the guy with the ZZ beard. That's xylophone there at about 5:02, yeah? Really effective. Where is Zorn by the way? That's him conducting, isn't it? Is that Ribot on the guitar? Hell, even the drum solo is great! Love it when the band all come together around 7:11.

Conclusion: Well was I ever wrong! That was a blast! Really enjoyed that.

So, Love or Hate? This would have to be a Love.

Possibility of looking into the album: Probably still only 60%, but that's not bad considering.

Thanks!
It's made from samples, mostly from solo improvised music, cut up note by note and rearranged to form new melodies.
That's where he choppiness comes from, although I think of it as a feature, not a bug.
The track actually ended with an acoustic guitar, not with violin, the harpsichord thingy doesn't sound like one of mine though. Confusing.

I'd just like to express my frustration with this thread. Trollheart, I think you're too much of a dictator with all your lousy rules. This thread would greatly love a J Dilla review, please just review it. I don't doubt you being a truly good human being, but just ease up slightly. Amiritefellas?
