Well it could hardly happen twice, could it? Is it possible I might love this album as much as the previous one? Well, no, not quite. I do like it but I don't love it. “Met Gala” is a good track, as is “Finess the Plug Interlude”, but it's a long way away from Esham. As a matter of fact, it got a lot better as it came near the end, and ended up being a very fine album, without a doubt.

Position in Discography: Fourth

A competent metal album, nothing terribly special. They seem to be unsure which subgenre, if any, they want to be, with elements of Industrial, Nu and even semi-Death (at least, in the silly guttural vocals occasionally attempted on some songs) and kind of fall between these stools. “Kill the Devil” (what does everyone have against the guy?) and “Rock's Not Dead” are decent songs, and the ballad “Alive” is worthy of note, but it's a little hard to take these guys seriously, if they're meant to be taken as such. Overall it's not that bad but it's hardly anything to write home about. The closer, "Holding On", shows a different side of the band and is a good one to end on, but I'm not convinced.

Hey TH, which do you like better: Free or Zep?

This isn't bad. “Say My Name”, “Harley” and “Better” are decent songs and I also like “Running With a Ghost” and “Bring it Back”. Twenty-one tracks on your debut is however a lot to expect anyone – well, me – to listen to, but in fairness it went it faster than expected and didn't seem to drag on. Some filler, certainly, but overall decent and worth a listen.

Album title: Serenade for Horace
Artist: Louis Hayes
Genre: Jazz
Nationality: American
Release date: May 26
Position in Discography: I don't know' as a drummer he's figured on other people's albums so ....
Estimated Rating:

Have I heard of this artist? No
Average RYM Score: 3.50
In an interesting occurrence of serendipity, it seems Louis Hayes has been drummer for, among others, Yusef Lateef, whose Meditations is Occult's choice this round for the Album Club. However, I'm not good with drummers so if you're expecting me to enthuse about his technique, timing or skill, prepare to be disappointed. Nothing bad to say though; good stuff so far. The vocal track on “Song for My Father” takes me somewhat by surprise, but it's a really touching yet not mushy portrait of the singer's dad, and there are some nice horns and cool piano on show here. A jazz fan could obviously review this album better than me, and I do apologise to those who may rate this guy for my shortcomings in that department, but there's really not much I can say except this: it didn't bore me, it didn't hit me with the Horns of Violence, and I pretty much enjoyed it all the way through. If I had to describe this, I think I'd call it joyous jazz. Best I can do, guys.

This is really excellent. So much more than just a basic pop album. Nice Latin rhythms, soft ballads, strong mature singing. Very sensual while at the same time being quite rocky. Only six tracks, so hard to judge properly, but opener “Tanto Tanto” is a really nice gentle ballad, with “Hoy” a bouncing poppy tune and “Bandida” tripping along an a nice restrained conga-style beat. Closer “Colores” has a very dramatic twist to it. Lots to listen to in here for so little. Will have to listen to more of this lady's work.

Album title: El Dorado
Artist: Shakira

Nationality: Colombian
Release date: May 26
Position in Discography: Eleventh

There's something about Shakira I like. Maybe it's her dedication to her country's language; she has after all, despite becoming a superstar in the English-speaking world, gone on to release Spanish language albums throughout her career, with two of her last four being in that language. She also writes her own material and seems to be a pretty serious pop star and singer who's come up the hard way, the traditional way, ie through dint of hard work and determination instead of having everything handed to her.
“When a Woman”, one of only three tracks sung in English here, is great, and “Amarillo” has a vaguely AOR-ish feel to it. Unsurprisingly, given the title, “Trap” is a trap song which works very well, and “Coconut Tree” just reeks of a holiday on golden sands under blue skies with nothing to worry about.

“La Bicicleta” and “Deja Vu” both have that cool, laid back Latin feel, skipping along nicely, and “What We Said” nods back a little to the basic rhythm of her big hit “Hips Don't Lie”. Maybe. Nice ballad to end on, closing out a pretty cool album, but if I have to choose between the two Colombian ladies, I'm going with Arenas.

You reviewed an album called El Dorado, and didn't make any ELO jokes?
