Batty hung the moon. We all know this.
It is known.

Batty, I think it was "u scurred" but I decided to amend it and attribute it to you.
You're welcome.

Album title: All is Vanity

Genre: Pop/Electropop
Nationality: American
Release date: June 9
Position in Discography: Second and final
Estimated Rating:

Have I heard of this artist? No
Average RYM Score: 2.73
I've just read that this lady was killed by a supposed fan, which is horrible and inexcusable, but prior to this I had never even heard of her. This, her second album, was apparently released posthumously, with the consent of her family. “Steady Love” is a powerful pop ballad, good percussion on it, there's a real blues sway to “Crowded Room”. “Pressure” is okay, though I could do without the speaking bits going on in the background, not sure what that's about. “Echo” is really good though, upbeat without being annoying, then “I Only Miss You When I Breathe” is one of the standouts, a darkly atmospheric and bitter ballad which really showcases her voice. A horribly sad and tragic end to a promising career, indeed.

Check out more from this artist? I don't think so

Album title: Chuck
Artist: Chuck Berry
Genre: Rock and Roll/Chuck Berry
Nationality: American
Release date: June 9
Position in Discography: Twentieth and final
Have I heard of this artist? I may have heard of him, all right...
Have I heard anything by this artist? Of course
Average RYM Score: 3.19
Hold on a moment! Are you ****ing serious? I was just about to pass this, assuming it was yet another collection/retrospective, but then I read it's Berry's last album, released just before his death in 2017! Christ! The man was NINETY and STILL recording! There's a reason why he is, and deserves the title of being, a rock legend, even THE rock legend. Ratings have been suspended for this album, for obvious reasons. Your feet develop a life of their own without any input from you, from the first track and you're transported back to the 1950s, to the heyday of rock and roll. I guess really this album kind of defies or transcends review, and I doubt I'm either equal to the task nor have the right to do so, so all I'll say is that it's great to hear he had it right up to the end, throwing in rock (“Wonderful Woman”), blues (“You Go To My Head”, “Darlin'”), a little island music (“Jamaica Moon”), even spoken word (“Dutchman”) as well as keeping his trademark sense of humour (“3/4 Time (Enchiladas)”). He even has a look back to his classic with an update in “Lady B. Goode”. There's nothing more I can say. Rest in Peace, Chuck: the world of music, and especially the world of rock, owes you a debt it can never repay.

Album title: Cigarettes After Sex
Artist: Cigarettes After Sex
Genre: Dream Pop/Slowcore/Shoegaze/Ambient Pop
Nationality: American
Release date: June 9
Position in Discography: Debut
Estimated Rating:

Average RYM Score: 3.27
Well this is lovely, but I would have sworn that was a woman singing. Apparently, it's not. Slowcore may be my new thing: I don't think I've heard any band in the genre yet that I don't like. Shoegaze too, and this has both, and more. “Apocalypse” is a real standout, as is “Opera House”, but then the whole album is excellent. I could definitely see these guys taking their place, in time, beside such giants of the genre as Slowdive, Low and Ride.

Yeah, even as a total whore for dream pop/shoegaze, that track left me cold. Might check out the album anyways, in case there's something better on there.

Album title: Adiós
Artist: Glen Campbell
Genre: Country
Nationality: American
Release date: June 9
Position in Discography: Sixty-fourth and final
Estimated Rating:

Have I heard anything by this artist? Yes
Average RYM Score: 3.19
What is it with this month and death? What is it, in fact, with this day and death? Two albums already released on this day in 2017 by artists who either were already dead or who died shortly after what turned out to be their last album was released, and now a third. Glen Campbell, soft country superstar, had been suffering from Alzheimer's for years, so much so that according to his producer, he couldn't remember the lyrics to the songs here and had to keep being prompted. But he knew enough to know he was dying, and wanted, like Bowie, to leave one last musical gift for his fans, and so the album was terribly poignantly but appropriately and prophetically titled simply Adiós .

The album contains covers of some of his favourite songs, ones which he had never previously recorded, including Harry Nilsson's “Everybody's Talkin'”, Willie Nelson's “Funny How Time Slips Away” (on which the Red-Headed Stranger guests himself) and Dylan's “Don't Think Twice, It's Alright”. Most of these songs I don't know, bar the first one mentioned (and I see it wasn't written by Nilsson, but he certainly made it famous) but I do have to admit Campbell, like Berry on his last album, does not sound like a man facing death. Country music seems always generally to look back to the good times, often the hard times (sometimes they're one and the same, of course) and this is no exception, unsurprisingly. As Campbell gets ready to meet his maker, he uses his music, his favourite songs, to reflect on a life well lived.

You may not like him or his music, (I don't, particularly) and if you don't then this album certainly will do nothing to change your mind about him. But in an era where many musicians die in retirement, often forgotten till the notification of their passing is posted, you have to admire men like Bowie, Berry and Campbell, who went out the way they wanted, doing what they loved and giving their fans one last final tip of the hat and a wink and a smile before they departed. Rest in Peace, Glenn. Adiós, compadre. Vaja con dios.
