What Sucks About This Genre: Hip-Hop Edition

http://planetill.com/wp-content/uplo...1/NWA-Guns.jpg

Yo mother****er! You think this music sucks? **** you, man! Imma find out where you live and **** your bitch up while you watch, then imma pop a cap in yo ass! How you like that, nigga?

Yeah, if there's one thing that has always prevented me from really listening to hip-hop it's been the use of expletives and violence, surely the highest quota in any genre? Often very misogynistic, usually boastful, and sometimes, really, not very good. Obviously, there's a whole world of music within the genre, with examples ranging from the excellent to the dire, but as a genre, though I've found some artists I like, it's not one I'm that eager to explore.

Come at me bro.
But leave yo gun back in yo crib, you feel me?

rubber soul 07-19-2018 05:39 AM

Confucius say one must be careful. One may start a thread titled, 'what sucks about Trollheart's genre threads' :D

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 07-19-2018 05:40 AM

white people and trap music

YorkeDaddy 07-19-2018 06:30 AM

Trollheart thinks that 90% of hiphop is about guns/women/violence but in reality it's only like 20%.

It's kind of obnoxious and comes off as implicitly racist, but whatever he's old and white and gonna die within a decade along with the rest of the old white people that feel similarly

holy ****

MicShazam 07-19-2018 06:31 AM

It's true of lots of genres that you gotta dig a bit to find most of the good stuff, but with hip hop, virtually anything you will have ever heard of if you don't do some heavy digging will have sucked major donkey balls*. It's not just mainstream hip hop that sucks, it's also the layer just after that.

Then you go deep enough and something listenable starts to appear.

Still mostly meh.

*: Don't say "but what about Eminem? He was very popular and you must have heard of him?" ... My point exactly.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 07-19-2018 06:32 AM

your ears suck

MicShazam 07-19-2018 06:34 AM

After Eminem raped them, yes.

rubber soul 07-19-2018 06:34 AM

I'm in the middle too. I like a lot of eighties and early nineties hip-hop aka rap. It gets a bit too violent and misogynistic for me after that. I really prefer the more politically charged rap of Public Enemy and similar bands than say, Snopp Doggy whatever his name is these days. Do you know he's now a game show host by the way?

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 07-19-2018 07:18 AM

but are we really surprised that mb’s resident old white males don’t like hip hop

rubber soul 07-19-2018 07:22 AM

Maybe some of us resident old white males like a little more music in their black music, you know like Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, etc. Sheesh!

YorkeDaddy 07-19-2018 07:23 AM

What I like about the 80% of hip-hop that's NOT about drugs/money/women is that it's generally just about how hard life is, especially since a lot of the people making hip-hop are constantly prejudiced against by people who think and act exactly like Trollheart towards them. I don't know about everyone else but I consider myself lucky and ridiculously privileged that I didn't have to grow up in the poverty-riddled streets of craphole America like a lot of these dudes did, and the hardships of that is reflected in some of the very best hip-hop. It's like a window into lives that are different than mine in the best way they know to express it. Despite some of it coming across as brutal and aggressive it's actually beautiful to me that we have a medium where the less fortunate can have a voice.

I'm generalizing a lot in the opposite way that Trollheart did, and there are certainly rappers that rap simply because they love it and not because they had some awful upbringing that they need to get off their chest, but yeah. It's one of the most emotionally charged genres out there and that's why I love it.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 07-19-2018 07:23 AM

@rubber soul

that’s the equivalent of “i cant be racist, i have black friends!”

it’s ok to be behind the times, gramps.

So if you don't like music that has songs that glorify the dehumanizing of women, then you're racist. Now I understand.

Again, that’s MAYBE 10-20% of the genre. You can find disgusting humans and lyrics in any genre

.

This thread is basically tl;dr. If you don't ****s with hip hop I'm sorry for your loss cuz.

rubber soul 07-19-2018 07:32 AM

Fine, but just because I don't gush over hip hop does not make me a racist. I'm not a huge fan of Country music either, does that make me Un-American?

I would happily label myself un-American. Have you seen this place lately???

And you would definitely have tendencies of implicit racism if that’s really how you view hip-hop as a whole. Take an IAT test and tell us your results

Anteater 07-19-2018 07:41 AM

A lot of the stuff out there that gets labeled as "abstract" hip-hop bores me but classic boom rap and jazz rap stuff is ace.

rubber soul 07-19-2018 07:57 AM

You know, I'm not going to explain myself here. I know who I am and that's all that matters. I'm not here to be taken down because I don't submit to your personal musical tastes. I'm sorry but I happen to think Kanye West is a jackass. I also think John Lydon is a jackass so I guess I don't like White people either. Boy, what a loser I must be.

So f*** all of you and the horse you rode on, I'm outta here!

Just waiting on the results of that IAT.

I'll even give you the link:

There's no shame in implicit biases if you acknowledge them, but there is shame when you deny that they exist.

Janszoon 07-19-2018 08:09 AM

What sucks about hip hop is that there’s so much attention given to the lyrics and the lyrics are generally underwhelming.

Of course implicit racism (and other biases) exists. We all have a little racist in us. It's something we have to fight everyday.

I did try the test but I screwed it up. I just don't appreciate being called a card carrying member of the Ku Klux Klan just because I don't get wet over today's hip hop. I didn't say I hated the genre, it just isn't my cup of tea overall.

And, Batlord, yeah, I hear you. My parents had their biases and I was a little shocked when my Dad, a one time Democrat, was supporting Trump on Facebook. My step-father is even worse; he's one of those there are blacks and there are n- sort of people. Anyhow, a lot of the musical tastes are generational and maybe so are the attitudes, but it doesn't mean just because we're older we automatically hate certain groups.

I'll try the test again later, Yorke. I'm tied up with something else right now In the meantime, I'm just wondering what your kids will think of some of you (not meaning you, Yorke) when the time comes.

In other words, don't ever get old.

Lil Pump
It takes up a lot of my listening time

Nobody cares that TH and rubber soul are racist btw.

Disappointed to see it's turned into another ****ing race thread.

Agree with Janz anyway.

99.999% of people that make generalizations like this are racist in some way, shape, or form.

That's all I have to say on that subject, I'll be dropping it for good now

Interludes/Skits

I would agree with that observation. Doom is especially skit heavy. I would be alot more satisfied if they were replaced with you know... actual songs.

Okay, but don't say you're not racist because you're a big hip hop fan. It doesn't work both ways.

Yeah, I admit Troll could have worded his OP a little better. It was pretty white of him. Maybe this will teach him not to go overboard with these type of threads.

PS- I bet there are some black people who don't like hip hop either. Just sayin'
