Well, Joy Division is not now, or will ever be "Punk". They are probably best classified as "Post Punk", and maybe one of the founding fathers of the Goth movement, but not Punk.

Yes, they are a kick ass band, Transmission is porbably my all time favorite song.

Yes they were Punk If you hear their early stuff such as the Wasrsaw EP.And It's pretty tacky to associate them with the Goth movement because ever goth band has tried to rip them off and every goth band did it horribly. Plus goth music just sucks.

I have the Bela Lugosi's Dead single and Mask. Bela Lugosi's Dead is an amazing track other than that i'm not impressed at all.

No...they were not, I repeat, not punk. They started out very early on playing a very peculiar (and extremely mediocre) form of punk/art punk, yes, but the music they are actually known for is simply not punk and there's no way around it.

Music journalist Jon Savage, one of the screenwriters of the recent 2008 Joy Division documentary, probably put it best when he said:

"Joy Division were not punk but were directly inspired by its energy."

They moved away from their punk rock influences pretty early on and created the dark, sinister sound that is their trademark - in the process, becoming one of the most important initiators of the Post-Punk movement. Their best known song, Love Will Tear Us Apart, is pretty much Synth-Pop.

Please dont talk to me like I know nothing of the band.

You misunderstood me I said they 'were' as they were once punk as in when they first started out.

The dude wasn't talking about their early stuff. He was talking about the band generally. So he was quite right, but you corrected him all the same for some reason.

With that said, the "goth" part was pretty off...I wonder where that idea came from...
