Which is probably why I liked it at least some of the way. I'm not even sure if there are specific things that unify all the horror movies that I do like. Those were just my best guesses at what it is that attracts me to them.

Argh! No! Those are even worse, since they affect me way more than movies do. Years ago, I played through Silent Hill 1 with the lights off, while alone in my apartment. It freaked me the hell out and I haven't really done things like that since. I'm just not into that particular form of entertainment. I don't like the state of mind it puts me in.

I played a bit of Silent Hill again earlier this year, but this time with all the lights on. And preferably the game on low volume. Even then, I stopped after two evenings with it. I got to the school, then stopped playing when it started feeling too unnerving. I'm not usually a chicken in all sorts of other situations, but I just really don't enjoy horror when it actually gets to me. Just makes me feel ill.

I can't play horror games. They freak me the **** out. But I love trying. Nothing makes me as present in a game as when I can feel my own heartbeat.

Back when I played Silent Hill in the dark, I remember doing something I really ended up regretting one of those evenings. After playing, I wanted some fresh air before bed. It was November or something, so pretty cold and dark outside. I took a long walk that ended up going down this long stretch of sidewalk where the lights had gone out part of the way. I passed this big, ominously rumbling power cabinet or pumping station or whatever it was that was covered by branches and leaves. There was just something about the whole feeling of that place. The darkness, the cold, the sounds made by that machine. It felt so Silent Hill like and my nerves were already on edge from playing the game. I walked down that street and I swear, I've never felt such powerfull shivers down my spine in my entire life. I turned on all the lights when I got home and put some music on.

I'm NOT built for horror games

Horror movies don't do it to me, horror games generally don't, but a good creepypasta can **** with me so hard that if I go outside afterward for a cigarette and it's night... it just feels like I'm being watched and I want to go back inside more than anything. I can turn on the back porch light, but then it just feels like I've put a spotlight on me and now everything beyond the light is a wall of malevolent blackness. I always know when I've done this to myself cause I'll be reading with the lights out and all the darkness beyond my computer screen starts to feel wrong and I have to keep my eyes glued to the monitor so my imagination doesn't start ****ing with me. But it's already a lost cause by that point.

And yet I keep reading creepypastas.

I hate that feeling! It's like I want to have my back against a wall so I don't feel like anything is behind me. When I was a kid, I used to check under my bed each night before I went to bed. Guess I'm still a bit paranoid at times.

I just don't enjoy all of the violence, gore and that focus on building an atmosphere of dread and creepiness. It's the bread and butter of horror movies, but completely wasted on me. So, if a horror movie is to have a chance of appealing to me, it will have to primarily focus on something else. Characters, most of all. Creative sets, good cinematography, a good soundtrack... Things that usually aren't priority number 1 (or 2, or 3) for horror movies.
Have you tried Dust Devil? I'm no fan of horror movies either, but I loved this. And there's only a little gore in it.

Definitely never heard of that before. It looks pretty damn crazy, but I'm not sure what to make of the trailer at all.

If you're ever going to trust me on a movie, trust me on this one. I told you, I hate horror movies and yet this is in my top ten ever. It's low budget, like three characters I think, good music, great atmosphere, narration with links to South African mythology, and a ****ing fantastic ending. I'd be amazed if you didn't enjoy it. Frown, have you seen it?
