I think it's both overdiagnosed and overtreated but I agree; there are many ways of dealing with having a disorder and drugs aren't always the right one

More often than not, it was the tenured ones who couldn't give a rat's ass if you learned or not and they were just there collecting their paycheck and babysitting you.
Tenure can also embolden good teachers to be stronger advocates for their students. I had pluses and minuses as a teacher but I used my tenure as leverage to push my agendas. I overestimated the impregnability of my tenure though.

Also, it’s not an excuse but a lot of long term teachers are burnt out because the system is so ****ed not because they’re *******s.

It’s hard to get tenure and it’s almost impossible to fake a work ethic to get that far along.

My guess is that typically ****ty teachers are just a symptom of an overall systemic failure.

In Japan, teachers are given tenure from day one and they work hard as hell. That’s a cultural difference and real respect for education though.

Like pretty much anything though tenure has bad points as well.

I’m sticking with my antidepressant this time though because doing **** my own way hasn’t worked for a long time. I’ve decided to keep taking it even if I decide not to take it lol

That seems wise. Drugs may not always be the right solution but that doesn't mean meddling with your own medication is a good idea.

Glad to hear that, OH.

A bit frustrated and sad to read everyone's posts on the last few pages of this thread. Makes me angry that people who are so naturally intelligent, as many of you are, had to suffer at the hands of incompetent "educators" or mental health "professionals". I hope this does not seem too corny, but - I truly admire your strength in making your way through these struggles.

***

On to Marie's 6-pack.

Which aquaintance influenced your music taste the most?
My parents, via my father’s jazz collection (he was a jazz drummer) and my mother mainly for country music and The Beatles.

Do you have any nicknames irl (and if so, what arre they, if you feel comfortable with sharing)?
A childhood friend still calls me Miss Etcetera (because I was obsessed with the term “et cetera” as a child). An aunt and uncle sometimes call me Giggles (due to my laugh).

What is your favourite word in the English language?
psalm, or balm (the favorite word is ever-changing)

During which period in your life were you dressed the worst, and what did it look like?
Elementary school. I always wore hand-me-downs from my older sisters. So much so that I once begged my mother to buy me a blouse from a local store that was covered in penguins on a teal background (so that I could wear something original. It was original, all right. My classmates teased and called me “Penguin”. I didn’t wear that blouse for very long, but the nickname stuck for a while.)

You wake up one day and realise you've become invisible. What is the first thing you do?
Panic at first; but ultimately would feel relieved. I don't think I'd get much of a kick from going around undetected and spying on people. I'd probably just become a hermit and go to sleep for a long time - without being found!

What is your favourite (combination of) ice cream flavour(s)?
Häagen-Dazs coffee flavor. Or a cherry bonnet from the Mister Softee truck.

The banality of evil doesn't just apply to genocide. Anywhere where beaurocracy can enable acceptance of uselessness is just as capable of dealing in forms of misery.

^ Very well stated, and I totally agree. You're really smart and deserved so much better than the hand you were dealt.

1. Go to your bookshelves (or wherever you keep books), close your eyes and randomly grab a book. Open to page 30 and quote the first full sentence on the page.

2. You can keep only 3 books for the rest of your life. Which would they be?

3. What is your ethnic background?

4. Describe one of the most embarrassing moments in your life.

5. What is your ultimate comfort food?

6. What is the last film you watched in the theater?

“I don’t think so.”

2. You can keep only 3 books for the rest of your life. Which would they be?

Finnegans Wake, In Search of Lost Time, The Norton Anthology of Poetry

3. What is your ethnic background?

White

4. Describe one of the most embarrassing moments in your life.

In college, I was taking an elective music appreciation course, and a famous electro-acoustic avant-garde composer that I respected very much came as a guest lecturer and was explaining his recording techniques. I raised my hand and said something like, “I’m sorry. I didn’t quite understand what you were just explaining. Would you mind please going over the last minute or so of content once more?” And he responded by asking me if I knew what a microphone was. Then he went on to describe what microphones do in an extraordinarily simplistic condescending way. I remember being even more embarrassed by how obviously embarrassed I was. If it happened now I would’ve been like well do you know what a ding dong is because you’re about to be choking on mine bitch. But at the time I just sat there looking at the floor.

5. What is your ultimate comfort food?

Cheese on anything.

6. What is the last film you watched in the theater?

Midsommar
