Oh trust me that's the prevailing theme over here too. The age restriction doesn't really count for much over here; the only difference is parties tend to be private ones rather than in bars and clubs.

I dug this out from an old thread.

What annoys me in general about NZ society is the alcohol culture. I'm not against alcohol at all - I like to have a beer while I'm studying and I enjoy getting pissed. But when the youth's answer to everything is to get drunk, being inebriated is considered a requirement for having fun, drink driving is rife and 14 year olds are vomiting in the gutter, you know there's a problem. Can't I just fucking enjoy my beer without some meathead approaching me and challenging me to scull it? Heaven forbid someone should actually drink beer for the taste rather than to get shitfaced as fast as possible. And when the All Blacks lose a game, wives flee their husbands because domestic abuse peaks.

That still doesn't give people the right to fight people, just because they have probelms that we don't know about.

I like alcohol a lot. Getting drunk is wonderful .. it's my favourite state for music enjoyment as well.

Especially when I've been in the arctic, alcohol has been easy to come by and very cheap. Beer is much cheaper than milk up there and mainland-expensive whiskys like 12 year old single malts are very cheap up there as there is no taxation whatsoever. My poison of choice is beer and whisky - the killer combo. Like so many others, I'm very fond of the islay whiskys - Laphroaig, Bowmore, Ardbeg, Lagavulin and so on. Talisker is nice and reliable since every pub here has it and I have some other here-and-there favourites like Knockando which is an excellent speyside.

Other than that, I like some bitters. My favourite is probably Fernet Branca, an italian bitter that my girlfriend hates with a passion. She won't kiss me if I've had it. Gammel Dansk (means "old danish") is probably a bit more rare outside of Scandinavia, but if you see it - try it - and get a beer to go with it .. One sip of beer followed by one sip of gammel dansk followed by one sip of beer etc. It's a proper danish breakfast. Wonderful!

I know a couple of russians and some fins and they really like vodka, so although it sounds like a contradiction to drink something as tasteless as vodka clean, it quickly grew on me and I think it's quite nice. It needs to be cold, though! The russians put it in the freezer and ice doesn't form at -18 centigrades .. at least not if the vodka is proper.

Rest assured if the age to drink goes up to 21 over here i'm going to be devastated. Yeah i do like to get ****ed everynow and again and i love the taste of alcohol too but the main thing is: I think i'm a better person when i've had a few drinks. I don't feel shy anymore, it opens me up and i can just talk easily. I'm not aggressive at all either, in fact i got beaten up the other week because i refused to hit some guy first.

Yeah there's some twats out there who can't handle their drink/handle themselves in the first place but go and punish them instead of people like me. That age restriction goes up and it's like i've lost some years.
