What is this topic for? I'm on an extremely high dose of Effexor XR for... since 2007. Everyday I take one bead out as I want off it for various reasons. One being my disturbing dreams.

Mental illness in itself isn't something anyone should feel bad about living with; the objective is really just finding a way of coping with it. I don't think anyone can be "fixed" because most thoughts and behaviors that are considered "abnormal" live within everyone. In other words... while it is exhausting to be sick, the exhaustion is there; while most people don't understand it, it's not their responsibility to. Just think "well, this is part of me, and I might as well roll with it" but if things get to the point where you can't handle life anymore, it might be best to reach out to a professional (or several - many psychiatric doctors are different; every one of them has their "thing" that they know, but someone else might be able to help you a lot more).
Possibly, but research has shown it's very common. An ad on Kiwi TV said at least 1 in 5 have a mental illness. But someone can research it if they want legitimate statistics.

I had depression 5 years ago, triggered by a physical assault but that only lasted a year, even though depression is severe in practically all members of my family. I had PTSD after the Christchurch earthquakes for 5 months and occasionally have low levels of anxiety but otherwise I'm a really happy-go-lucky person.

I think my experiences with mental illness have shaped me and made me a stronger person.

I seem to have noticed that this might possibly be true. My family is Irish and talking about feelings or much of anything other than football or the weather really is about as unimaginable as pigs flying. I know that's not uncommon in general but it does seem to be sort of extreme in the Irish.

In my family the Irish side is pretty emotional. It's the French-Canadian side that's all tight-lipped and stoic, both the men and the women.

That's because Canadians have no souls. You have to have a soul to have emotions.

French-Canadians simply hate being called Canadian... they even want their own goddamned country

Today, there was a discussion at work during my lunch break with my work buddies, where everyone talked about which mood stabilizers and anti-depressants they were on. I just stayed really quiet, because even though they were talking about medication for psychiatric issues, I didn't want to sound like I was crazy. They all seem perfectly functional to me, but I'm off meds, and I don't want them to freak out and be like, "Oh, tread lightly around Sara; she's a potential serial killer or something..." behind my back.

I know that has to be irrational, but I didn't divulge even a hint of my own personal mental health history.
