How did you choose your username?
Haven't seen a thread about this, and it's something I'm interested in. Some people have really interesting usernames, and it would be fun to know how they chose them. Of course, no-one has to say: if you'd rather keep it to yourself then that's your prerogative. Here's mine anyway, for those who are interested.
Some people (not surprisingly) equate my username with being a troll, in the sense of a forum troll, though people who know me will understand that's certainly not the case. I have been asked on occasion does it stand for "trolling for hearts" or "the heart of a troll"? Well, neither really. My original name when I went onto the internet back in about 1986 was Lestat, due to my interest in and love of Anne Rice's Vampire novels, but as they became more popular, and with the release of the movie "Interview with the vampire" in 1994, more and more people started using it, so I had to look for an alternative. Determined to use something no-one else was, I looked to my unfinished fantasy novel, in which trolls play a major part. However, unlike typical fantasy they are not slavering, murdering beasts or slow-witted simpletons: my trolls are a proud, noble people with a long lineage stretching back to the elder gods, and would probably be best compared to the Klingons in Star Trek, or maybe the Vikings. Their best warrior, a general and a statesman, and a legend in his own lifetime, Aman Trollheart, is a central character in the novel, and I thought of using the name Trollheart. Nobody else seemed to be using it --- probably it had been heard of nowhere else --- and so it stuck. Now, it's my login, username, internet presence, email and anything else I join or am part of. And that's the story behind my username. Anyone else want to share? :) |
My username comes from one of my favourite songs by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band. I picked it because Trout Mask Replica is my favourite album and I guess that I wanted to show my avant-garde roots. There wasn't too much thought put into my username because I originally came here to promote my own music, but that passed and I'm glad that I picked a fairly good one.
I plan on getting "my smile is stuck, I cannot go back to your Frownland" as a tattoo when I can afford it. |
Phish fans are called phans. Phish's guitarist is Trey Anastasio. My user name is a mixture of the two. ThePh(an)astasio.

I think there's another one of these, but they're always fun, so I'm in. Mine is taken from a story I read in a ghost story book my mom got me. I don't even remember if I read any other of the stories, but when I saw "Canwll Corfe", it got my attention. Mainly because I had no idea what the hell it meant. As it turns out it means "corpse candle", and they're lights that are supposedly seen at night bobbing around graveyards. I went to look for pictures, and funnily enough, pretty much all of what came up are from things I've posted here and on Basenotes.

Mine is taken from the t-shirt I bought at my first ever gig, which was Metallica in '91.
The shirt said 'In Vertigo You Will Be' on the front. I was going to be 'In Vertigo' (as the shirt suggested) but shortened it to just 'Vertigo' at the last moment. |
I just use my name.

I chose my name because I thought it is a beautiful sounding word and describes my porcelain skin. I'm no Vanilla in the sack however. |
Usually I go by the username Rjinn. I added an x because it sounded like *jinx* and sounded a bit more magical. Anyway, the R is the initial of my first name. Djinn as in genie since I well, fancy them as mystical being. So I thought I'd fuse all of it.
It seems strange though not using my usual username. Can you change your username here? |

I hate my username.
I never last when it comes to internet forums. I sign up, it bores me and I leave or I sign up and I use it until the flaming, spam, petty "arguments", volume of arse-munching morons and general douchebaggery gets too much for me to bear and I lose all interest. Thats why I put very little thought into my username cause I didn't think I'd be able to put up with you clowns for this long. Luckily for me, this forum has never had too much of the above and I kinda like it, but now I have a username I hate. My username is not, as a lot of you think and as I will soon now discover a lot more of you are about to realise, is not mojopunk. Read it again. My username is Mojo Pin UK. Mojo Pin is a Jeff Buckley song and the UK is, well, the UK. |
I don't even like my username, I thought of it in about 1 minute as the forum asked me for a name when I signed up. I just thought of a favourite band which was the Doors and a favourite song which is my username. I thought I'd be on the forum for about a week or so and then get bored and leave, so I never gave any thought to an interesting name.
Should think of a new one now that this thread has come up. |
Since I have had three usernames:
Paloma: My first username. It's Spanish for "dove", which was my boyfriend at the time's nickname for me. Plum: I was tired of being reminded of my ******* ex, so I changed it to "Plum" because that's what +81 nicknamed me. Hermione: About a year ago I joined a Harry Potter livejournal community, and we had tinychats all the time and since I was the bossy know-it-all, I got nicknamed Hermione/always had my name as Hermione. I like it better than Paloma, so I changed it. |

My original username when I joined in 2009 was Pobodys_Nerfect, which I'm pretty sure Dethklok bassist Murderface has tattooed on his stomach, so that's probably where I got it from. I was actually tossing around the name Squid_Vicious too, but for whatever reason went with the former. Then around June/July 2009 I decided that username was stupid and went with LoathsomePete as kind of a take on Those Poor Bastards' vocalist Lonesome Wyatt, but I figure if I put "Lonesome" it would sound like I was desperate for attention.
|
I've been on forums for about 9 years. Illidan was my first being a crazy Warcraft fan, then aeiki, some random name I made up. The last few forums after I took a break and reformed stuck with Rjinn.

Mojopunk sounds really cool though. |

Started using Plankton a few years ago after I started throwing my originals out on the net. I saw how many other guitar players were out there doing the same thing and thought "We're all like plankton swimming around the sea, waiting to be gobbled up by larger organisms (record companies etc.)", so it made sense. That, and a guitar is affectionately called a plank in some circles, and I've played a ton of music in my 30+ years on it.
Oh, and I'm also working towards world domination. |

I might change my username to MojoPin or Mojo, but I've been saying that for ages. I don't like username changes but small ones are pretty easy to follow. |
I chose my mum's name.

I chose my usernames on these two masters of Congolese Music
http://manoretro.unblog.fr/files/2012/04/sans-titre.pnghttp://www.afrisson.com/local/cache-...6395-fe7c8.jpg Yes Franco and Pepe Kalle. I love congolese music so much because of Franco and Pepe Kalle. How did really choose my username. I am going to give another stor that led to me being FRANCO PEPE KALLE. One of them was after getting into a major fight with some girls because they were mad at me because I was not playing enough good music for them. After that, I watched a video of Franco that I found myself laughing at so much. Franco had so much good humor. Franco's very humerous behavoir made me smile too much and I laughed way too much. Franco's humerous behavoir drew me towards his music. As for PEPE KALLE, it was this performance that I became addicted to PEPE KALLE. This performance showed you that you only needed Pepe Kalle because he was the ONLY thing that people cared about. The rest are just accompanys for Pepe Kalle. Pepe Kalle was the man and he commanded the animations and he allows his female dancers to dance pretty good too. Also I heard Pepe Kalle's voice more than anyone else. What I saw was Franco and Pepe Kalle knew how to be the masters and how they were able to command the stage and how they were the important folks. This was one of the many things that made me convinced that these two men are the masters of Congolese music. I find their music so influential to me. That is one of the MANY factors that made Franco Pepe Kalle. |

And I assure you that theres nothing clever about it :p: |
Not really sure I remember how "Goofle" came about to be honest. I know the 11 is my favourite number, therefore I must have first used it on a site where numbers are required. Maybe "Google11" was taken, or was checking on urban dictionary for "Google", and miss spelt it, only to find out that I liked the explanation for "Goofle" quite a lot. Yeah, I think that's it.
|
Could you not have mentioned Pepe Kalle's name a bit more, FPK? You only used it eleven times here, twice in the same sentence at one point!

My username comes from a one man band I had going at the time I joined. The band was named after the famous Dutch mapmaker Willem Janszoon Blaeu who I had read about in the nonfiction book The Island of Lost Maps (a fantastic read by the way). I chose the name partly because I'm fascinated by maps, partly because I like the way the name looks, and partly because I thought it was hilarious to name my band "Johnson".

Hey, Janszoon, I'm gonna have to check out The Island of Lost Maps. Does it actually have a lot to do with cartographers or explorers, or just the maps themselves as they relate to the characters? I actually love maps myself, so I recognized "Janszoon" right away when I first saw your username.
I actually chose my username because it's generally reflective of myself. I like the suffix -oid used as "like" or "resembling." I find the word "geek" to be a very ambiguous term, since it's been used in various different ways over the years. A few definitions: Geek -a peculiar or otherwise dislikable person, especially one who is perceived to be overly intellectual. -An unfashionable or socially inept person -A person with an eccentric devotion to a particular interest -eccentric: a person with an unusual or odd personality As a kid, I was always considered an outsider freak because of my eccentricities and strange devotion to certain interests. You know, "eww, back off geek!" (if you don't recall, back in the 90s, everyone and their cat tried to avoid being thought of as a geek or a nerd). Pretty much everyone agreed that I was a person who was unfashionable, socially inept, eccentric and overly intellectual. Eventually people started to appreciate my geeky qualities, if only superficially. So, when I joined this forum, I wanted to choose a name that described me well- indicate the kinds of geekoid posts I'd contribute. I think it does a pretty good job. |

I've noticed that at least the last three of Janszoon's avatars have been ludicrous pictures of "people" with serious faces. A theme?
