The word "relationship" is overused. I get why people use it: it's vague and doesn't indicate any particular level of commitment like "girlfriend" or "boyfriend" does. If one of the persons in the "relationship" breaks things off and the other persons protests, the one breaking things off can say something like "oh, our relationship wasn't on the level you thought it was." I'm not saying that's necessarily a bad thing. I'm just tired of hearing the word. If anyone has any idea of a good replacement word or phrase, I'd like to hear it.

That's why they came up with the word "situationship"

Nah, that sounds too much like, and every bit as lame as, relationship. It’s really just another word for “friends with benefits.” Some new word or phrase is needed.

"Partner" is another one that sounds lame to me. When I was younger, before the days of gay marriage, I only ever heard it used to describe one member of a homosexual couple. Now I hear it applied to every couple.

+1. A herterosexual couple was sitting at my table at a Graham Parker some years back. Before the show started, I asked them if they had seen Graham live before. The woman replied "My partner and I saw him..." I almost asked her "What typed of business are you and your partner in? Real estate? Accounting? Law?" but thought better of it.

No one here believes me when I say that the terms for boyfriend and girlfriend in Quebec French are "chum" and "blonde" but I swear it's true. We also have "relation" (relasyOn) in the sense of relationship but my favorite slang word for it is "histoire." Which obviously means "history" but the way it's used it soudns more like "to have a thing with someone"

In Hebrew it's the same word for "friend," haver. Clinton uttered the words "Shalom, haver" upon learning that Rabin was murdered. The same word my chick refers to me by!

We've been engaged for like a year. We can't get married in Israel because I'm not Jewish, and in Israel there's no civil marriage, only religious. We've gone for what many Israeli couples go for when they don't want to be married by the rabbis: they do a civil wedding in Cyprus or Prague, which is then rubberstamped by the Israeli authorities.

But our flight to Prague was cancelled because of the war. Good thing it was just the two of us and we didn't have a wedding hall booked or anything like that.

Anyway it's getting a bit weird to keep calling her "my fiancé"...
