Yeah I probably should but I'm not immune to the biological clock thing. I regularly think about having kids. I love to think about having a kid who I can teach to read by reading them The Hobbit over months by doing fun voices, then following up with the LOTR trilogy and just making it a great bonding experience like I had with my mom reading to me. But I also recognize that this is simply biology working against me because I know that I would not be an emotionally available parent who would be immune to the abuse my family had performed on me, and so I treat these desires as simply an urge like any other to be entertained but not acted upon if they weren't in anyone's best interest.

And it bothers me that someone who I thought was on the same wavelength was in fact deluded about their thoughts and might now be prey to the most base of breeder instincts for no other reason than arrogance and stupidity.

I hope I'm not butting in where I shouldn't, but I'd like to make a comment on this hotly debated topic. Well, it was hotly debated back in the days of LadyIsLingering and her mammoth thread. Remember?

^ First up, I'd suggest that you shouldn't feel as if you are betraying your younger self WWWP. How many other pre-teen ideas do you or any of us feel we have to stay true to? Much better to be flexible about your goals in life imo, and adjust them as your circumstances and feelings change.

^ With that little Hobbit vignette, you already show more paternal feelings than I did as a young man, Batlord, so I would question your use of the word "know" in predicting your unsuitability to fatherhood. I never expected to have children and when my wife was pregnant I thought it was going to be the biggest disaster of my life. I had so many misgivings and financial problems, but those biological instincts are super-strong and my attitude flipped 180 degrees within the first months of parenthood. I was happy to make looking after a child my #1 priority and I now see having a child as one of the greatest pieces of good luck in my life.

So what I'm suggesting to anyone is (i) allow yourself the right to change your mind and (ii) parenthood is like warfare inasmuchas nobody knows how they will react underfire until it happens to them.

And if that wasn't advice enough for one post, I think that Batlord and WWWP should forget their differences and have a baby together ! You'll relieve all that stress between your ideology and your instinct and in one generation, the two of you with one child will have contributed to halving the world population. Looks like a win-win to me ;)
