So you'd say V For Vendetta was a 5 star film?

It's a decent film, nothing more - nothing less.
Top 3?!?!
I'd love to know what 2 are above it?

Dude, I'm not a ****ing film critic. I just like the film.

And for the record, the two above it are Saving Private Ryan and Pulp Fiction...

Well, your favourite films would be, in your mind - flawless. Wouldn't they?

I don't like Saving Private Ryan but I like Pulp Fiction.

I like V For Vendetta more than Saving Private Ryan tbf.

First time I have ever seen this and it's not a patch on the original although there were some great scenes of pathos, it lacked tension and that sense of foreboding that was prevalent in the 1931 film.

debaserr 10-27-2010 06:54 PM

hooray i get to re-watch the social network! wink wink

Seriously? I actually liked it a lot more than the first one. Though... wait a second... which one of them had that super-annoying townswoman in it?

Classic? I have to say, I saw that one in the theater and found it pretty forgettable.

robjekyll 10-28-2010 07:31 PM

half of Fellowship of the Ring. I should know never to start that movie when I'm tired.

I've seen this film dozens of times, but today, I was at my mother's and she was lamenting the fact that it was close to Halloween and there were no good horror movies on.

She kept scanning the channels, then I noticed her pass up Suspiria, which would be coming on in five minutes.

I was all, "WTF, mother. Suspiria is a great horror / suspense film."

So I made her watch it.

And her mind was blown.

The end.

Alien Abduction: Incident In Lake County

An earlier example of the "found footage" horror genre that was pretty mediocre. I am completely baffled as to why anyone would have believed this was real, but apparently it caused some controversy after airing on UPN back in '97. One would think that seeing Shari Khademi and Myles Wolf credited as Alien #1 and #2 would assuage any concerns about the authenticity of the film, but I guess we really were all that dumb back in the '90's.

It was a pretty tame movie when it came to horror, the image would pixelate and the sound would distort whenever an alien was around so you knew whenever something scary was going to happen, and that pretty much squashed any notion of fear the film may have provoked.

I kinda decided to have a lazy day in today, so I got a little bit of a Clintathon going;

http://www.firstshowing.net/img2/gra...oster-full.jpg

^ I'd heard of mixed reactions to this, but I thought I'd give it a go anyway. Clint Eastwood was brilliant in the lead role, making this well worth the fuss of finding the thing, but a lot of performances from his fellow, younger cast members were just plain mediocre. Add to that the fact that the character of the priest and that whole religious sub-plot got on my pecs, not to mention that it all had the subtlety of a sledgehammer in places, and you've got a film that was good and nothing more.

http://www.cinema-bio.ch/FILMS/Mysti...ysticRiver.jpg

^ This was easily the best film I've watched for the first time all year though. I was just mesmerised from start to finish. Brilliant photography, story and performances from Sean Penn, Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon = a film that's probably just broken into my all-time favourites list.

TheCunningStunt 10-29-2010 01:34 PM

I thought Gran Tarino and Mystic River were both poor films myself.

debaserr 10-29-2010 01:47 PM

mystic river was great. i love me some robbins and penn in that too.

Brilliant film especially in the use of colour and sound. The plot meanders a little but then most Argento films do.

Mystic River is a little ponderous at times but the performances are excellent and the ending more than makes up for the slighty excessive running time. Couldn't watch it again though.

It is superb but a very difficult watch and very of it's time regarding fashion and if you know director Alan Clarkes work at all you will know that he shoots very economically, almost documentary style with very few zooms or tracking shots.

The Fascinating Turnip 10-29-2010 02:18 PM

Not quite sure what to think of it. It was mostly unpleasant to watch, but it was definitely supposed to be.

I was definitely not baffled by it, as some people seem to have been.

Sounds like a gritty tough old-style British film... exactly what I'm looking for! I should enjoy it, it's either that or Gangster No 1. Both downloaded, both been on my list for a while.

Reservoir Dogs and Scream 3

RD was great; Scream 3 was alright, though I haven't seen the the first two.

Sljslj 10-30-2010 05:05 AM

Tonight I watched Alien Apocalypse and How To Be A Serial Killer.
Alien Apocalypse was okay. Lots of unoriginal material, cheesy effects, and bad acting, but it had it's moments.
Serial Killer was ****ing great. There's nothing I love more than a good indie film. Kinda scary though how much I found I can relate to the two main characters, one who is a killer and the other a killer-in-training.

Absolutely terrible. How can one articulate nothingness? Such a hollow soulless film. Explicit sex scene, crash - repeat for 2 hours.
I hated it.

Book was fantastic though, really like Ballard.

Pretty good, although some prior knowledge of philosophy is needed.

I've seen Crash only once and it was years ago, but I don't remember it being terrible at all. On the contrary, it was very (thought) provoking. But now I really want to read the book.

I hope the book is better than the film because the film's awful.
Worst Cronenberg I've seen thus far.
I found it so pointless and empty. He's had some really good films though, so I was bound to watch a bad one eventually.

I'll be watching Existenz next.

This is one of the most subtle and slow building horror movies I've seen in the longest time. Instead of shaky-cam style shooting this is very professionally done and actually feels like a real documentary, to be honest if it wasn't for the credits at the end and if all my pre-knowledge of the film had disappeared I would have thought of it as the real deal. It's also got a lot of pacing, none of the ghostly images stay too long and never get too clear, because things stay scary the less you see of them. Definitely not a film for everyone though, I can definitely say I had a similar disappointed feeling like after I saw The Village, but it did unnerve me in parts, but that was really it. They also had this one plot device involving the son receiving multiple bruises and then they just disappeared, but they never really explained that, or even tried to explain that with a doctor's opinion or something, they just kind of threw it out there and forgot about it and hoped you would too. Still it's always nice to support independent cinema as well as foreign films so I would have to give this film an tentative recommendation.

NumberNineDream 10-31-2010 09:16 AM

I had watched Wall-e earlier this week, my favourite Pixar film thus far.

As for what I watched yesterday:

^Another Wes Anderson movie I loved. I am a fan of his usual cast, and his very dysfunctional characters, that are always in some way familiar. My second favourite W.A film, after the Royal Tennebaums. Great Road movie, and as always a very cool soundtrack (he always includes The Kinks it seems).

^I loved this one... and that pool scene: Epic!
I'm pretty curious to see what they'll do with it, in the American remake, though I don't think there's much need for it. The original is already sublime.

^Thought it was time to watch the last part of the Trilogy. Definitely preferred the other two, still a very fun watch trying to guess all the Western references.

Finally:

^I'm a big fan of Julianne Moore, so I had to watch this one. I liked it, the right amount. A very well made film, not superior in any way, but it does keep you gripped to the screen in a way. And a surprisingly good performance by Amanda Seyfried.
