I've had it for ages, but it took a while for me to get around to actually watching it. Part of the reason, I believe, is because I've often seen it compared to The Machinist which I thought was good, but not entirely to my tastes. In The Machinist, although Bale did an excellent job, I found I didn't care that much for his character. The twist wasn't all that and I didn't like that it came across as a sort of "feel bad" movie.

Jacob's Ladder is similar in some ways. When you first start watching it, it seems to be about this guy whose reality is coming apart, but Jacob's Ladder really was brilliantly done I thought. The characters had much more room for drama and I really wanted for things to turn out well for the lead character (played by Tim Robbins). All the weird stuff going on early in the movie really caught my interest and by the end of it, I had that revelation which led me to understand most of the scenes that had left me pondering earlier.

Great film and it instantly became one of my favourites. I'm already looking forward to a second viewing. :)

I am really surprised that you have only just watched this! Glad you did though as it's one of the most intriguing films to come out of Hollywood for over 20 years.

Directed by Adrian Lyne (9 and a half weeks) and scripted by Bruce Joel Rubin (Ghost) who would have thought that such a collab would come up with this? Really good film that never really got the attention it deserved.

Last night I decided to reconfigure many of my cbz comic files into PDF's so I could more easily read them on my iPad. It's not a particularly hard task, but it is monotonous and time consuming. To help dull the boredom I decided to put on a movie or two as background noise and something to distract me as the JPEGS are compiling into one PDF file. I decided on watching '80's comedy movies that had slipped me by for many years and settled on these two.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...%281985%29.jpg

Weird Science (1985)

Apparently not the most popular John Hughes movie but I have to say I liked this far more than The Breakfast Club or Sixteen Candles (1984) and it's about on par with Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986). The best modern day equivalent I can think of would probably be Superbad (2007) but far imagine it far more surreal. The two leads had a good chemistry together and even the douchebag bullies had some charisma that made them hard to dislike. This may be because they're really the only bullies from an '80's high school movie that aren't psychopaths and it's always fun to see Robert Downey Jr. in a really young role. Best of all though, they included a song by Killing Joke in the film, and that's apparently the quickest way to my heart. I have a feeling I'm in the minority on this film but I enjoyed it.

Revenge of the Nerds (1984)

I started off really liking this film but towards the end I kept on trying to figure out how they all weren't in jail. I guess sexual harassment laws were a lot more lenient then, but rape is still rape.

Big Ears 05-11-2012 02:52 PM

There was a Weird Science TV series that wasn't as bad as it sounds.

Ghost Busters (1984)

I started watching this film called Empire Records and after about 45-minutes in I realized I hadn't laughed once at the one dimension stock characters and decided to put on Ghost Busters in stead. I think it may have been one of my better decisions yesterday as the film never ceases to amuse me.

ok let me explain something.....i've been watching Dark Shadows since i was 12....and for a few years there it was the only time that my step father and i did not claw at each others throats....and to this day he and i get together and do marathons of the wonderful 60s soap opera....so when i first saw in Entertainment Weekly that Tim Burton was doing a rehash of the show i was very excited....then i saw the first preview....i could not believe that two people who claim to love the original gothic soap opera would turn it into a stupid comedy....and i vowed to NEVER see it (i mean you saw what they did to The Prisoner right?!)

but

for mothers day i took my mom and my two sisters out for lunch and a movie....explaining that they would have to agree on a film that they wanted to see....out of spite they choose Dark Shadows....so here i am.....determined to NEVER see this horrible film....and now paying for four tickets!

i suppose i need to remember that the trailer does not necessarily tell you exactly what the film will be like

it was awesome.....great (over) acting on all parts....especially the lovely Eva Green....and really had the exact over the top soap opera feel as the original Tv show......it had everything the original show had....creepy enterprising vampire, ghosts everywhere, werewolves....tons of subtle through outs to the original series...an over the top dramatic story and the cheese.....oh my did it ooze with cheese

when Jonathan Frid (the original Barnabas Collins) died a few weeks ago i had joked that he probably saw the trailer for the new film and his body just gave up....i can now say that i really hope he had a chance to view this as i am sure he would have loved it

Yeah so this movie was pretty great. A lot films I see from Gus tends to stick in my head for quiet some time.

Well this has to be one of the most awkward films I've ever seen. That being said it was kinda good. The whole plot of the film is actually pretty hysterical despite the dark undertones. Killer soundtrack.

I hope you cleaned up after yourself or I'm going to ****ing kill you.

I'm too lazy to find posters for them but I've see a couple recently.

DiG! - Documentary on The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Anton is such a prick. Great film though.

Play Misty For Me - I wanted to stomp Jessica Walter's character the entire time. I didn't understand why it took so long for a solution to actually be made. I think Clint likes vaginas too much.

The Untouchables. Wonderful film that surprised the hell out of me with some great acting from Mr. Connery.

poppyjones 05-13-2012 09:36 AM

the last film I saw was called Just Go With It, was a really funny comedy with Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler. Typical romantic comedy but still very funny. I also saw Avengers recently, was quite disappointed to be honest. Everyone said it was amazing so I had really high expectations, but thought it could have been better.

Exo 05-13-2012 09:54 AM

So what you're saying was that I should go rent Just Go With It instead of seeing the Avengers?

On it.

James 05-13-2012 10:09 AM

I saw The Avengers at the cinema. Very good. I don't go to the cinema often enough cause it was a great experience.

Good movie, more family drama than boxing movie, but quite convincing and engaging. I'm not a huge Mark Wahlberg fan, but he was okay in this. Christian Bale did yet another amazing transformation as an actor into Dicky, a bit of an ******* ex-boxer who got close to the stars and then ended up as a crack addict. I think he's a great actor, but it's interesting how he almost always play characters I don't really like that much. :p:

Recommended to all who like a good drama now and then.

Watched this a few days ago. It's basically a noir detective film set in present-day, where the throw back is with the dialogue and situationals, but taking place with school teens.
Stars Gordon-Levitt.

I personally found the movie just "OK". The novelty of the noir aspect wore off quickly, and the story just drug on. It was nicely complex, but there was no real catharsis for me when it was all said and done. It didn't feel all that rewarding by the end of it.
The acting was great, but it wasn't a pillar the movie could stand on by itself.

It was good for a one-time watch. Probably wouldn't watch again.

just awaiting "Prometheus", really

not really hyped about the new Batman (didn't like the previous two much)

or Spiderman (The Lizard is one of my least favourite villains, they should have gone with The Vulture, the Enforcers, The Chameleon or Mysterio)

It's fine that you didn't like it, but how in the world was it like Heat?

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jBOMTXSsNQ...hadows%2B2.jpg

This film was like a nice big bowl of oatmeal. Is it bad? Not really. Is it exciting and fun to consume? Hell ****ing no. I was so bored with this one. I really think Tim Burton has stopped trying. The screenplay was written by somebody else and that person should not write screenplays. It was blander than bland. It was like, well, like oatmeal, plain and boring. Burton and Depp need some time off from each other.

cat and mouse game between Bats and the Joker felt a lot like Pacino/De Niro

Sparky 05-13-2012 11:50 PM

Haha I can see it. Both have some pretty gnarly masked bank robbery scenes.

I think a more obvious remake of heat was the town

Influenced by, even Nolan admitted he based Gotham City off of the movie. But I have not seen Heat to say wether I agree the influence goes beyond just that and the "cat and mouse" and aspect... which is not really something that movie is responsible for starting.

a lot of the elements were quite similar, the recruitment, the interrogation scene, the final showdown

The downtown shootout in Heat has to be one of the best ever action scenes filmed, I think its a great film.

my only gripe with it is its length (nearly 3 hours)

Very good film. A lot of people said that the plot was very hard to follow but I didn't find any difficulty in it. You just have to pay attention. Gary Oldman was brilliant in it and without seeing the fifth nomination (guy from A Better Life), I can say that George Clooney definitely deserved that Oscar but Gary was nonetheless worthy of a nomination. He said so much with his mannerisms and expressions without using spoken word. The rest of the cast was also very good. Overall a very good spy drama.

Somebody said that Dominic Cooper should have gotten an oscar nomination for this role. Nah. He was okay but nothing really special. I liked the film but not enough to call it great or enough to watch it again. It was worth the watch though. Good action film. Bit graphic with the violence.

Jason Statham is the same brick of an actor and there wasn't enough De Niro. Like Devil's Double, it wasn't bad and worth a watch but just don't expect anything than a forgettable action movie that will at least kill two hours.

Classic obviously but time has not done this one many favors. It just feels very dated now and it's sequel was much much better. Still a great sci fi classic that can still make me watch it.

Withnail and I is nothing short of genius. Killer Elite was a little disappointing and I could talk about The Terminator all night! It certainly looks outdated but I wouldn't change it for the world.

The Devil's Double has been on my 'To Watch' list for a while and I am going to blind buy TTSS when the price comes down.

had you ever watched the original tv series?

i honestly think this will not be received well by anyone who was not already a fan of the cult soap opera

which pretty much sucks as the major market will be baby boomers who probably will like the throw outs and the general feel but not the film as a whole

in all honesty this film was destined to fail

I expected another prison break movie. You know the one. The first half hour describes the kind of prison that they're in and that they need to get out. The next half hour something insane happens that puts the protagonist in a spell that he can't get out of and he and a bunch of mates plan a breakout where they almost get caught like three times, lose a man or two, but eventually get out.

This isn't that film. Fans of Christopher Nolan are going to love the timeline and how the plot progresses. It's got a Memento-esque feel to it. The movie was written for Brain Cox and man does he make those who made that decision proud because he did a fantastic job.

It's on netflix instant I believe so it should be easy to find but you really need to check this out if you want a gritty raw prison escape movie that isn't like every other gritty raw prison escape movie.

I guessed the film within half hour :( That doesn't mean that I'm all that clever, I have just seen too many films and I found it so built up by many people that the narrative was far too average for it NOT to have a twist and therefore disappointing. Performances are superb though.

http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...Ir1JSCYBV-dFLw

A 4 hour documentary?! I like a lot of Tom Petty's music but surely this is stretching a guy's music to breaking point considering his voice can really annoy me at times but this was damn good I have to say. I did watch it in two halves though!

http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...8O-WomljokDGOQ

A cult classic in the making. Insanely violent and even amateurish at times but that doesn't detract from some very unique scenes and a sense of claustrophobia not seen since Deadbeat At Dawn or Fight For Your Life.

Rarely have I watched a movie with so few establishing shots that can still paint a unique (albeit screwed up) world.

Trailer NSFW and if this was Asian cinema everyone would be falling all over themselves for it! Italian Horror cinema has reclaimed it's throne!
