Life of Brian is great.

The latest film I've seen is 'The Class', a French semi-documentary about school. It was really interesting, but also depressing.
It just shows how everyone, regardless of how they treat you, has a story to tell.

Heathers (1989)

I've generally tried to avoid all things high school related since I graduated 6-years ago but I've been told time and time again that if you're into dark comedy, then this one is a must-see. I can see where they're coming from, it's a very perverted version of the typical John Hughes formula and as someone who hated high school I would be lying if I said I didn't glee in satisfaction when the popular students died horrible deaths, and then laughed when their deaths only further cemented their popularity. In many ways Christian Slater's character kind of reminds me of myself in high school, quick witted, offset, and slightly deranged.

I saw this not too long ago as well for the first time. The ending was pretty damn good. I also love the actor who played Slater.

I watched 19 minutes of National Lampoon's Animal House (US 1978), directed by John Landis and starring John Belushi, on the TV and then switched channels. I used to find this sort of thing funny, but now it just seems irritating.

To clear things up, Jason Dean was a good character for him.

watching The Avengers later

hell yeah

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_n76Cs6E3CQ...vie+poster.jpg

ignore War Machine in the above poster (he's not in it)

well, the build-up was too slow, i was thinking is this a spy or a superhero movie? it only feels like an Avengers movie in the midway mark, there's some good slapstick, some good broad comedy, even if the climactic battle looks like Transformers

Chris Evans also makes a pretty good Captain America, even though I found that movie a bit short

major grumble? Loki is the main villain, couldn't they pick a more representative one like Kang the Conqueror?

7/10

Guybrush 05-05-2012 05:35 AM

The Avengers was well done, I though, especially considering the magnitude of the task. I think something they did particularly well was give each hero enough screen time to satisfy fans of each one. The only negative thing about it, from my point of view, is that it's very much Hollywood action made for the masses and it's not something that will leave much of a lingering impression on me.

I think I could agree on a 7/10 overall. Very entertaining movie for sure. Still not quite as good as Watchmen in my opinion. ;)

Freedo 05-05-2012 06:16 AM

Saw Jurassic Park last night, good movie. I've only ever seen from the middle to the end because I come in on it on TV by the time it's almost done. Finally saw it all the way through.

8.5/10

another major complaint is that it missed out on several integral members:-

Ant Man/Giant Man/Goliath/Yellowjacket
The Wasp
The Vision
Wonder Man
Black Panther
Luke Cage/Power Man (he was in Thor briefly)

I think that by cramming more elements in there, you would have to make the movie much longer in order for it to work or the movie as a whole would suffer when there are too many characters and not enough screen time for each.

I thought it was fine as it was. Just enough characters to not make it confusing, have some interesting inter-hero-drama and to not steal focus away from the general plot.

they could have used Ant Man and The Wasp instead of Hawkeye and Black Widow

and if they're too small, use Goliath and The Wasp

they were the original members, after all, along with Hulk, Thor, Iron Man and Cap

I enjoyed the second one, but with other people I found that if you weren't a fan of some of the over the top action parts, you may not like this one, cause they crank that up to the maximum.

After watching lots of rubbish films, Chicken Run by Nick Park really made me laugh.

Just started watching the Lone Wolf and Cub series of films. It's a Japanese series generally from the early 70s based on a manga I believe about a samurai executioner who is framed for a crime and ends up a victim of these clan politics. He leaves his home and starts travelling the road with his 3-year old son in search of vengeance. It also helps that he's the meanest mother****er I've seen in a movie in a long time.

I was surprised at how good the first movie, Sword of Vengeance, was. It easily had enough violence and nudity for an exploitation movie, considering it it was made in 1972, but it's so well crafted and has a lot to offer so it doesn't feel cheap. The main character, the always serious Itto, was particularly well cast and the sword fights were just incredibly well done and had a lot of realism, I thought. There are six films in total I believe. Now I'm looking forward to the second one.

I liked it a lot. Very well shot, good comedic moments and gradually builds to a few great climaxes.

if you're into those kinda movies, the two "Lady Snowblood"s are much better movies

Lone Wolf & Cub didn't manage to capture the "feel" of the manga much

I'm not so worried about whether or not they captured the feel of the manga as I've never read it, but thanks for the suggestion. I'll check out Lady Snowblood :)

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

First time seeing this since I was in middle school and fortunately age hasn't made it bad. I was actually surprised at how well I remembered certain shots, like Leatherface's first kill with the hammer. The closeup shots on the faces and eyes of Sally during the climactic dinner scene were also really good at creating a good scare, as well as the sounds. I forgot how eerie some of the sounds in this movie were.

The Dunwich Horror (1970)

I really wanted to like this one more than I did, but I would be lying if I said I thought it was great, or even pretty good. I'm not sure if it was the B-movie effects or that I just never found Lovecraft's original "Dunwich Horror" story to be that scary in the first place, but there was nothing particularly frightening about this movie, or even really psychological titillating. Definitely not as good as other Lovecraft incarnations like ReAnimator (1985) or Dagon (2001) and only makes me yearn for the Guillermo del Toro adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness even more.

Don't look for Breaking the Waves if you're in the mood for something uplifting :).

If you can find them watch Ken Loach's Ladybird, Ladybird and Gary Oldman's debut as director Nil By Mouth. Both those films shake me to the core with their power and honest brutality but there is hope in both films although they are mentally draining (and both based on true stories).

Good man :) Also Scum (the cinema version) should be added too. It was my first experience outside of Horror movies of a film that can seriously assault the senses and leave you drained. Salo and The Devils should be added too.

Guybrush 05-08-2012 02:24 AM

An interesting thing about Salo is that it seems to be a very mild adaptation of Marquis De Sade's 120 Days of Sodom .. I haven't read it (nor would I), but at least it seems that way after checking out the plot synopsis of the depraved work on Wikipedia.

I don't understand why anyone would write a story about rich "libertines" torturing and sexually molesting children for months before finally killing them, including their own daughters. And it's from 1785.

I guess Marquis de Sade was a real ******* ;)

Howard the Duck 05-08-2012 04:34 AM

talking about films that make you depressed and feel like killing yourselves, i'd advise you to refrain from watching "Der Todesking" (The King of Death)

in four short vignettes, it aptly demonstrates how life is, well, actually really meaningless

what ever you are saying there....you are right.....Sade was a real (insert any foul word)....keep in mind what word is rooted in his name :)

but you cannot just dismiss his books as Sadistic pornography and this one in particular is really not written that way (or at least not so much in my opinion....Justine is much worse for that aspect) but the philosophy in his writing should not be ignored very few people have been willing to express mankind for what they are capable of and really grasp the concept of "will of power"....and the corruption in everyone's soul

and this book is a real joy to read while riding on public transportation :)

Was it any of these:

1) You were a fan of the franchise in your youth and you saw how a TV show about cars that turn into robots was somehow warped into a movie about a guy in his early 20's trying to get laid?

2) A movie Michael Bay had no interest in making

3) A movie where the titular characters get very little screen time in favor of Michael Bay jerking off the US Military

4) A Michael Bay movie?

Guybrush 05-08-2012 12:20 PM

Finally saw Jacob's Ladder ..

http://www.sinepil.org/imaj/huysuzat/jacobs-ladder.jpg

I've had it for ages, but it took a while for me to get around to actually watching it. Part of the reason, I believe, is because I've often seen it compared to The Machinist which I thought was good, but not entirely to my tastes. In The Machinist, although Bale did an excellent job, I found I didn't care that much for his character. The twist wasn't all that and I didn't like that it came across as a sort of "feel bad" movie.

Jacob's Ladder is similar in some ways. When you first start watching it, it seems to be about this guy whose reality is coming apart, but Jacob's Ladder really was brilliantly done I thought. The characters had much more room for drama and I really wanted for things to turn out well for the lead character (played by Tim Robbins). All the weird stuff going on early in the movie really caught my interest and by the end of it, I had that revelation which led me to understand most of the scenes that had left me pondering earlier.

Great film and it instantly became one of my favourites. I'm already looking forward to a second viewing. :)

One of my favorite movies. Everything you said was pretty much spot on. The movie just appealed to everything I'm into. One thing I loved was the fact that there really wasn't a lot of special effects, but the result was creepy as hell. For example the jerking heads. No special effects, just sped up camera work. The truly creepy moments in cinema are the most real, not generated by computers.
