Certainly not a cult director? While Cronenberg may be one of the more widely know directors deemed "cult", he is still most definitely a cult director (even with the inclusion of A History of Violence and Eastern Promises). You seem to barr him from being considered "cult" because The Fly was a studio effort, but seem to be ignoring the fact that The Fly itself is very much a cult film. Since The Fly Cronenber has made Naked Lunch and Dead Ringers, two films which also have cult followings. I'm not sure what your definition of "cult director" is, but for me a guy who has been churning out "cult films" since the 60s qualifies for the title.

Tarkovsky is revered as you say by scholars and film aficionados alike but to mainstream fans he is very much an unknown quantity so it that sense his name suggests a cult following.
Orson Welles is unknown to most mainstream audiences, is Citizen Kane a cult film and Welles a cult director? You've got a very loose definition of the term. I doubt most mainstream audiences could name a Kurosawa film, does he qualify as a "cult director" in your mind? The denotation of the word "cult" makes it applicable for use in these situations but you know very well that its connotation does not. Semantics arguments are worthless and adidasss has already stated that he could have used a better word.

jackhammer 08-03-2008 01:48 PM

Orson Welles is unknown? Virtually everyone has heard of 'Citizen Kane'. If not then 'The Third Man' not to mention 'Transformers:The Movie'.

A 'cult' director would be someone with a very small following and is only appreciated in small circles. Anyone with even just a vague passing in movies have heard of Cronenberg, yet name say Brakhage for example and then we are talking about a cult following.

Most movie goers would probably say 'Seven Samurai' for Kurosawa.

Anyhow to get back on track: what's the latest film you have seen:

Obviously dated but some deliciously dark humour and sense of menace. As usual with Hitch**** some brilliant trademark shots.

I think you're overestimating the intelligence (filmwise) of your average movie goer. I'd be willing to place money on the fact that if you walked into any random showing of The Dark Knight or The Mummy 3 only a minority percentage would know who Welles is or be able to name a film. Same for Kurosawa, whom you mentioned.

I'd agree that Brakhage would be considered a cult director, along with other "pure cineasts", but just because Cronenberg has a wider cult following doesn't make him any less of a cult director. Rocky Horror Picture Show is certainly a cult film, but I'd bet more people in your average theater audience have heard of it than of The Third Man.

I'm sure that most theatergoers who've heard of Kurosawa would say that, but your average audience probably has very few people who've heard of him (as popular as he is).

Anyway, I watched Murmur of the Heart last night, a Louis Malle film (another cult director )

Beautiful to look at and despite the languid place (and my general distaste for plummy English accents), it draws in the strands of each four sections for a touching conclusion. The beach tracking shot is a tour de force. Excellent.

Uhm, it's a musical by Takashi Miike. Do I really need to say more?

Speaking of musicals, I watched Dancer in the Dark two nights ago and that was amazing as well (and stars Bjork).

Speaking of Bjork, I've decided that I'm going to start using her name as a colloquialism for throwing up. Pass it along.

Piss Me Off 08-05-2008 01:33 PM

"I drank too much and bjorked."

Could work.

Classic. Although I don't think I will dig out the DVD too many times. Nice Ragtime soundtrack.

Must have seen this film about fifteen times and I never tire of it. I think that it is imaginative and uses lots of great filming devices and ideas. The director has'nt done anything since but he has a film in pre production so I will have to check that out.

Much better than I was expecting and although the film shifted it's focus away from the main character in the last third it is still good solid British cinema. In your face, violent, foul mouthed and a great soundtrack. A very worthy 2 hours of my time.

A better film than the Essex Boys.
Speaking of which and all things related...Range Rover murders. WARNING! Don't browse the crime scene photos if you have a weak stomach.

Intriguing site. Very informative.

simplephysics 08-10-2008 04:58 PM

Very predictable, I called the ending about halfway through the movie.. the plot was pretty medicore and has been done before, but a few scenes made me jump.. so 6/10

Pineapple Express.
Yesss.

I saw the new Mummy movie this past weekend. I liked it about as much as I liked the other two, and I didn't find it too distracting that Evy's character was played by a different actress, as I thought I would. I kinda have a crush on Jet Li, so that helped. :)

One of my favorite films of all TIME, man! Love con films. Grandpa turned me on to this one & all con films, really. Love the ragtime soundtrack as well. This is where The Entertainer gained the majority of it's fame from, and rightfully so, just fits the mood of the film perfectly. Cunning and wise, sly yet playful, catchy and just plain GOOD. You start watching things like this and you wind up a huge Martin Scorsece fan, like myself ha.

But uh, the most recent film I've watched... I watched Ramaro's Diary of the Dead last night... and all through the movie was trying to decide if I liked it. Kind of drove me nuts and I still haven't decided. It's a zombie film about kids trying to make a zombie film about the media toning-down a zombie ambush on the nation. Too many things to follow and too many annoying voice overs from the chick whose voice tries too hard to be "deep". It's a friggin' zombie film, I wanna see blood and guts and people getting ambushed, like Dawn of the Dead, there's my ideal zombie film. You've got an undead little girl brakin' in the nice suburban house with a hot, half-naked chick in bed with a stud. This was about 5 minutes into Dawn of the Dead. That's what I want - nonstop horror & action & tits, I want tits in a zombie film. I mean, they take over a mall and go nuts with the merch in the stores, the elitist-prick-character in the film even videotapes himself bending a hottie over the bar. THAT's a good zombie film. However, all that being said, I appreciate what Diary of the Dead was trying to say. But that's just too much symbolism for a zombie movie.

Oh jesus this was good. Just the kind of stupidly over the top, gory, sexy film i like. Me and my mate were laughing the whole way through, complete victory.

Much better than 'Deathproof'. What a yawn fest that was.

@ theboozeisback. The original 'Dawn Of The Dead' is all you need. The remake was for MTV heads with less than 30 seconds of attention span. Who wants tits in a Zombie film? I want gore, good action and a little satire is even better. If you want tits and zombies watch this pile of old tosh:

Piss Me Off 08-16-2008 01:44 PM

I've heard bad things about it, but i'm curious nonetheless.

I think I did see the original Dawn of the Dead... with my dad a while back. I remember liking it a lot. I appreciate good, satirical zombie movies like that, I do. But nowadays it seems like when I watch one I'm just trying to put on something ridiculously overdone so I can just smile smugly and enjoy the gore.

Very rough around the edges but a great Grime soundtrack and the violence is raw and brutal. No punches are pulled.

Not as good as 'Seven Samurai' which it is based upon but still a good morality tale.

Diary of the Dead was horrible. The more I think about it, the more I hate it. The whole idea of this guy with the camera watching as his friends get chased around by zombies was stupid. Seriously, in real life (I know that's funny because we're talking about zombies here...), one of the other guys would have beat the camera guy senseless, destroyed his camera, and either made him help his friends or feed him to wolves. That's what I woulda done anyway. Ugh!

The main problem with the new Dawn of the Dead IMO was the movement of the zombies...they could move faster than regular people...almost like they were super-human or something. It was really bothersome. But I did like the character of Steve. He was funny.

Really, nothing can compare to the originals...the 1967 Night of the Living Dead will always be number one in my book for zombie flicks.

Wifey Boozer 08-17-2008 08:09 PM

^ Steve was my favorite character in Dawn of the Dead. I love pricks in movies, I don't know why, it just does something for me. I think its because quip rhymes with whip.

I like the zombie films where the zombies are faster than the humans, it gets my heart racing more. I like it when the movie tries to scare me... but the best zombie film I've ever seen was Evil Dead, from like the 60s or 70s. That was good **** right there.

Lol Evil Dead '81. Another classic zombie movie is 'The Living Dead At The Manchester Morgue' AKA 'Let Sleeping Corpses Lie'. A low budget Italian/U.K production that has a rather rambling script but the atmosphere is brilliant and the gore is very gruesome for the time (1974).

I watched Tropic Thunder... it was hilarious and completely spot-on. Making an over-the-top big-budget movie about over-the-top big-budget movies is such a great concept it'd be pretty hard to **** up.

Ah I'm seeing this tomorrow night, glad to hear I won't be wasting my money.

sweet_nothing 08-18-2008 08:14 PM

I dare say that Tropical Thunder was better than Pineapple Express

I haven't seen Pineapple Express yet, is it worth the $9 to see in theatres or should i just wait for it to come out on DVD and download it?

Rushmore was the last movie I rented it was soo good

IMO yes, once youve seen one bromance film youve just about seen them all, but it was still funny as hell.

All of Wes Anderson's films are amazing

http://www.impawards.com/2000/posters/almost_famous.jpg
Really good, but I don't think I would be a Steelwater fan if they were real.

jackhammer 08-19-2008 12:49 PM

Wes Anderson is one of those 'quirky' directors that I cannot stand. Hal Hartley is another one. Their film's just ramble and don't actually say a whole lot (not to me anyhow). I much prefer gritty in your face independent cinema.

saw tropic thunder on friday night. i rather enjoyed it. the first minute of it or so was random lmao

Don't listen to him, it's funny as hell. ALOT of action and I've never seen James Franco better than he was in this movie. At least get it on bootleg so you don't have to wait forever for it to come out on dvd.

I thought tropic thunder was way better then Pineapple Express . I was really disappointed with Pineapple express

NoseClams 08-20-2008 11:51 PM

i havent seen pineapple express yet. i am waiting for my next weed refill so i can see it high.

I saw Step Brothers with some friends and I thought that was the funniest goddamn movie I'd seen in a while.
