I actually really enjoyed the movie. Great acting, cool special effects, good story, and we really can't go wrong with Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig. 9/10.

Frownland 02-09-2016 05:39 PM

That's weird, I always remembered it as being a Tommy Lee Jones film. Crackers all look the same to me these days.

Old white men all look the same.

That's racist.

Nope.

I'll just assume you haven't seen many old white men.

It's ageist. And me and Paul look nothing alike.

I wasn't being serious, didn't think I'd have to clarify on that.

Come on, you two could easily be a pair of saggy brothers.

Excellent movie. Did ya ever read up on how much the movie The Matrix "borrowed" from that flick?

JGuy Grungeman 02-10-2016 06:45 PM

I don't have too. It was way too obvious that Matrix borrowed from it. I've seen the Matrix two or three times.

JGuy Grungeman 02-10-2016 08:01 PM

OK, I need to get into the 20's so I might have a "Roaring 20's" marathon going on for a few days. Not sure if it'll happen, but if it does, here's the list.

The Adventures of Robin Hood
The Jazz Singer
The Passion of Joan of Arc
Sherlock Jr.
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
The Underground
Nosferatu
The Phantom of the Opera
Wings

Starting Metropolis. 30 minutes in, but it's so good it felt like 10. SO, altogether, that's 10 films from the twenties.

DeadChannel 02-10-2016 08:20 PM

Metropolis is so good.

Oh, heck yeah. That's a favorite I forgot to mention. I love how Ang Lee made the supposedly unfilmable movie so packed with story and yet, so uniquely visual. The underwater scene was brilliant.

How many movies did the Matrix get inspired by? I know about Dark City and Ghost in The Shell, but I've heard there's more, but I don't know which ones...

JGuy Grungeman 02-11-2016 03:13 PM

I know Serial Experiments Lain had a small influence on it. Not a movie, but something.

Touch of Evil.

What'd you think? I believe I posted about the movie in this thread but that'd be like 50 pages ago by now. I thought it was good overall but uneven and that the Seth Rogen parts blew away the other two character's respective parts

Really? I didn't know that.

Just saw Deadpool, and everything I could have asked for was in that movie.

It was alright. Some scenes were really good, the type of humor I enjoy from these Rogen/Goldberg comedies but some of it fell flat. If I had to rate it, 6.5/10

DeadChannel 02-11-2016 11:03 PM

Naked by Mike Leigh.

Excellent imo.

Great Expectations

Fantastic BBC adaptation of Charles Dickens' timeless novel. Seen a few versions over the years but this is the best yet.

It's this version and is available on Netflix I believe.

Chula Vista 02-12-2016 10:56 PM

Hadn't watched this one in ages. Maybe Hoffman's best performance and Meryl Streep was truly at her peak back then. They both very deservedly won Oscars for the flick. Add best picture, best director, and best adapted screenplay to the mix and you pretty much had a clean sweep.

If you watch this and can get through the last act without having tears running down your face you ain't got a heart. You younger folk will probably find it kinda slow in parts but the acting from all involved (even the kid is pretty mindblowing) should more than make up for it.

And now The Deer Hunter is on. TCM is doing 31 days of Oscar winners, all commercial free (and uncensored).

I'm gonna be a freaking emotional wreck by the time this night is over.

Today's I saw an wonderful movie while sitting at home. Thit is "student of the year"

innerspaceboy 02-13-2016 04:05 PM

We're snowed in for Valentines Day, so I've stocked up on munchies and we're gearing up for a romantic movie marathon of viral outbreak post-apocalyptic horror flicks.

Just took in the box office bomb, Doomsday, (god it was terrible!), and next up is John Carpenter's awesome apocalypse trilogy.

That movie is brutal and brilliant. One of the very best war films imo.

Last watched a Tamil Movie "One Many Army"

JGuy Grungeman 02-16-2016 10:27 AM

Well, this film buff has seen his first full Costner movie (if not Silverado, which I may have seen but don't remember watching at all). Weirdly, I didn't know he was in it. Also my first Russell Crowe movie. Man of Steel.

The cinematography kind of toned down the action sequences that were mostly driven by more special effects than any movie I can think of. Despite that, it has a good story by Nolan, some good camera moments, and a well-picked cast. Sure, Lois isn't supposed to be blonde. But she was a great pic for the role. I had fun. Overall, 75/100. Pretty good movie.

Boy, Tombstone was surely.... "inspired" by Silverado in the cinematography department.

The Act of Killing
It took a long time for me to be in the mood to watch this and with good reason, as expected it was one of the most chilling, disturbing documentaries I've ever seen. I think it's a very important movie for what it says about people, but also terrifying for the same reason.

Chula Vista 02-17-2016 02:44 PM

I'm afraid to watch that.
