Few good starters.

Cheers.

I saw Grave of the Fireflies as well. That is a good film.

I never bothered cos I thought they'd be a bit strange. ACO is weird but I watched that by chance and ended up liking it.

Frownland 11-03-2016 05:30 PM

I second his suggestion. The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, 2001 (though probably too slow for you tbh), Eyes Wide Shut, and Dr. Strangelove are all absolutely brilliant.

Chula Vista 11-03-2016 05:32 PM

Not sure how well E.T. has aged. I'd substitute Menace II Society in place of Boyz in the Hood. Much superior movie in every way.

Shawshank and Goodfellas are both MUST SEE. Expect to watch each of them at least two times though to fully appreciate them.

On a side note, watch Goodfellas before Menace II society. The Hughes brothers have proudly stated that they blatantly ripped off a lot of Scorcese's filming techniques that he used in Goodfellas when they made Menace.

Spoiler for Spoiler:
The long tracking shots and the foot stomping scenes are two prime examples.

*psst* that was list of movies he's already seen

The Batlord 11-03-2016 05:35 PM

Before you do all that, watch The Raid. And Crank 2. Don't want slow? Boom.

I agree with Batbitch, two fairly recent classics.

Yeah I started to watch that ages ago but didn't finish it. Not sure why tbh.

I watched E.T. a couple of months ago and found it even better than when I saw it as a child. The effects are shit obviously but I really like this film.

lol I've seen both Shawshank & Goodfellas. Sat there like  when Shawshank finished, maybe the best thing I've seen.

Frownland 11-03-2016 05:39 PM

Shawshank was my numero uno for a long, long time.

Ja I've seen it. Very very good. Some of the better character writing out there tbh.

Cuthbert 11-03-2016 05:49 PM

My friend keeps hassling me to watch it but I can't be arsed if it isn't in English. Said it's better than Shawshank.

I wouldn't say it's better, but it's still good. I know where you're coming from, and honestly it's worth reading subtitles. It's a really well done film.

I would say that they're on the same level.

Cuthbert 11-03-2016 05:56 PM

I'll get it watched

Pan's Labyrinth
Secret in their Eyes
The Man From Nowhere
Mother
Internal Affairs
I Saw the Devil

Well worth watching and having to read subtitles gets really easy once you're use to it.

The Batlord 11-03-2016 08:11 PM

****ing yes to Pan's Labyrinth. Most ****ed up fantasy I've ever seen, like some old school Grimm's **** for the modern day.

And on that note, Coraline is brilliant both as a fantasy and a children's movie to give children nightmares.

There are very few movies I can willingly watch with subtitles. Cause generally when I watch a movie, it's just background noise and a small visual to look at when I need to look away from what I'm working on. I very rarely actually watch the movie with a fixed gaze.

Paedantic Basterd 11-03-2016 08:34 PM

Amelie is another fantastic film with subtitles. Also, Inglourious Basterds (I think about 2/3rds is in either German or French, so that has to count).

Paedantic Basterd 11-04-2016 05:01 PM

Just watched the Lobster. Jesus **** that film made me uncomfortable, but somehow still verged on self-parody?

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 11-04-2016 05:13 PM

Ahh, I loved The Lobster! The performances blow me away each time I watch it.

I think two changes would have made it impeccable:

Spoiler for Spoilers:
1. Have the animal thing be a ruse. Anyone who can't partner up just gets killed. The animal thing bordered on absurdity.
2. Dial back the ****ing horrorshow music just a tad. That **** was so excessively dramatic it actually pulled me out of the story on a couple of occasions.

Other than that though, it was solid. Reminds me of Never Let Me Go (book) in some respects.

grindy 11-04-2016 06:07 PM

The Lobster is brilliant. The self-parody angle and the constant contrasts between horrifying and hilarious really spoke to me.
Have you seen Dogtooth?

No, but I'm intrigued.

You should be.
It's a bit more subtle and philosophical than The Lobster, although it similarly mixes surreal humour and some pretty extreme stuff. It's also beautifully filmed.

Dogtooth is one crazy and extremely unique movie. I mean, who ever thought of punishment via Listerine?

Side note. The son is really playing the classical guitar stuff in real time during that dance number.

Excited to see another TDL fan. Why's it your favourite?

Because Owen Wilson, Jason Schwartzman, and Adrien Brody in one movie directed by Wes Anderson.

Chula Vista 11-05-2016 12:15 PM

In The Line of Fire

Clint Eastwood, Rene Russo, and John Malkovich. Pretty suspenseful story about the Secret Service trying to stop a brilliant madman (Malkovich, of course) from assassinating the president during his campaign for re-election.

Aside from the film being incredibly well written and shot in the typical Wes Anderson style that I've come to enjoy in his films, the four reasons this film is great is because of the three leads and the man behind the camera. And the Bill Murray cameo.

This is really true.

When I was a teenager watching his films I thought his characters were so emotionally flat. Now as an adult I watch his films and I think how absurd and dramatic characters in other films are. He's got this ability to SHOW us character whereas most writers and directors TELL us through the dialogue.

Adam Curtis' HyperNormalization (2016)

I'm an hour in but have to pause it to get some sleep. Resuming the moment I get home tomorrow.

Frighteningly relevant (as always), and the soundtrack features Aphex Twin, NIN, Cliff Martinez, Clint Mansell, Suicide, Ennio Morricone, and others.

djchameleon 11-11-2016 03:15 AM

I finally got around to seeing Dr. Strange and it was pretty great. I love that they explain his world and what he does for people that don't know his story. Marvel does pretty well with origin stories. I wasn't sure how well they would do with Dr. Strange though but the visual eye candy is crazy. I'm glad I didn't see it in 3D because I know my eyes would be hurting so much after that movie. It probably looks jawesome in IMAX 3D though.

The Neon Demon

Realy really good. I was afraid after seeing Only God Forgives and being a little let down but this was disturbing, well paced, and extremely beautiful.

Dr. Strange

Was worried about this one but I needn't have been. Was ****ing awesome. Some of the most ridiculous **** yet in a Marvel movie, yet their commitment to not shying away from comic book ludicrousness kept this from descending into embarrassing b-movie territory. Just as important were Benedict Cumberbatch (who couldn't have been more committed to the silly lines he was spewing) and an incredibly vivid and creative sense of imagination.

If you don't like or are sick of comic book movies then this will not convert you, but if you're already on board then this will be yet another solid notch in Marvel's already notchified belt.

The trailer makes this look very cool, but yea, I was scarred by Only God Forgives.

Drive was a hell of a movie... And I like some of his older stuff too. I guess its time to do it up.

Arrival

Everybody owes it to themselves to see this film. Denis Villeneuve is now CEMENTED as my favorite director. He has surpassed Paul Thomas Anderson. That's how much I loved this movie. My god.

DO NOT WATCH ANY TRAILERS FOR IT. GO IN BLIND.

I can't stress that enough. It was a wild ass ride and I have no idea if the ads spoiled anything but it's likely they did because ads suck balls. I cried during this movie. I was sucked in. I was fully enveloped in the expertly crafted story. Villeneuve is a f*cking master at emotional depth and character building and even though I'm still elated after seeing it, it might be his best film. It might be one of the best sci-fi films ever. It's that good.

It's human. It's suspenseful. It's heartbreaking. It's everything I love in a movie.

Go f*cking see it.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 11-16-2016 09:46 AM

Awh **** yeah. He's already among my favourite if not #1, so I'll need to see this asap.

Exo 11-16-2016 09:53 AM

You really really need to. I haven't been championing a film like this in so long. It's a masterpiece.

djchameleon 11-16-2016 07:35 PM

I will still see it but I feel like I have been spoiled too much on it from interviews. The trailer hides the fact that it is acutally a chick flick.
