I'm with the crowd that agrees Blue Ruin is superior, but that Green Room is solid. What's the next color this guys gonna make next? Red Rocket? Amiritefellas?

He said the color theme was coincidental. The theme he was going for was people who are put into intense and dangerous situations that have no idea what they're doing.

Red Rocket sounds like a **** movie.

Finally watched Drive. Beautiful looking movie. Nice soundtrack. I liked it a lot.

Exo 07-18-2016 09:43 AM

Bone Tomahawk

Cool movie. One of the most brutal and gruesome death scenes in recent memory and Richard Jenkins is amazing as always. I just liked how subtle some of the violence was in this. No big swirling cinematic musical cues. I enjoyed this.

The Invitation

I'm a sucker for these kind of small slow burners. Reminded me a lot of Coherence which is a better film but this was still engaging and suspenseful. Holy sh*t does that dude look like Tom Hardy. Great ending to this too.

One of my favourite movies, the visuals blow me away each viewing.

If you're into cinema at all, you should check out this video. Exo showed it to me awhile back and it totally blew my mind and made me hold Drive on an even higher plateau.

Watched it for the umpteenth time because my friend's wife hadn't seen it. This is the Citizen Kane of movies and in turn, GOAT.

Overcast 07-19-2016 05:57 AM

Watched Apocalypse Now. Completely blown away. Everything about it is just beyond. Absolutely amazing. Humans made this?

Watched Blue Ruin as well. Pretty good. Green Room was more intense and unpredictable for me, but they're both fantastic.

was it your first time seeing it?

it's a rare film that will always give you something when you watch it...an absolute landmark in film

Chula Vista 07-19-2016 12:53 PM

Coppola almost killed himself making that movie. And Sheen pretty much had a complete nervous breakdown.

Love Drive. Watch it a dozen times and you'll keep finding new stuff. The elevator scene was inspired by Irreversible.

JGuy Grungeman 07-19-2016 02:26 PM

OK, I just read something about the alternate endings like 30 seconds ago.

Yeah it was my first time. Kind of glad I waited this long. Felt like I was watching a boat travel down an art exhibit of terror. Just surreal.

bob. 07-19-2016 11:09 PM

you really should watch the documentary...Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse

it really shows just how much pain went into making such a perfect and beautiful film

Yac 07-20-2016 07:37 AM

I know this is not the video games thread, but since you're discussing Apocalypse now..
The latest humble bundle includes a game called Spec Ops: the line. For 1$. If you want to take part in a very similar story (set in a ruined Dubai after an epic sandstorm cut it off from the world), get it. You will not regret it.

Working my way through PsychologyJunkie.com's list of THE TOP 25 FAVORITE INTJ MOVIES

Today's first time viewing - The Big Lebowski.

If anyone had told me that a scene would feature Moondog's "Stamping Ground" from Moondog (1969), I would have watched it ages ago!

Exo 07-22-2016 11:16 PM

You should have just checked it out ages ago because it's a classic.

Ah - a bit of contextual clarification - I spent the 90s in the hospital system with no exposure to television, music, or cinema. I was able to pick up our town college station on my boom box by using my body as an antenna, but the steel in the walls blocked most signals.

Only hospital-sanctioned creative works were permitted, and foul language was contraband. It's like the 90s never happened.

I'm doing my best to fill the gaps now. I still haven't seen E.T., Ghostbusters II, Close Encounters, Jaws, Dazed and Confused, Almost Famous, Terminator, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Poltergeist, Hellraiser, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Goodfellas, Rocky, Scarface, Reservoir Dogs, Boondock Saints, Animal House, National Lampoon, Godfather, or Total Recall

You can skip Ghostbusters II, but the rest you need to get on asap.

I was struggling with depression from age 14-18, so my parents dropped me off at an institution and I spent the last 5 years of my adolescence living in hospitals. The most regrettable element (pure cultural isolation aside), was that patients of all ages were huddled together in one room for schooling and the teaching volunteer "taught down" to the slowest student in the room. Still, I managed to graduate valedictorian of my district (having self-taught my way through high school), which was honestly preferable to the nightmare it would have been to attend it in real time.

I like to think that I'm stronger for it. But indeed - I've much culture to catch up on.

I was never in an institution, but from 3rd to the first half of 8th grade I got chucked into the "Emotionally Disturbed" class at my schools. Sounds far more ominous than it really was, as it was just a name so vague that the schools could justify stuffing all the problem kids in with the retards -- who the class was really designed around -- in what was essentially a forgotten dungeon of rejects they could ignore. So for almost six years I was taught at least two levels below my grade.

bob. 07-23-2016 05:43 PM

alright i've caught up on a couple, of blockbusters and a must see for the year :)

http://www.treknews.net/wp-content/u...kov-poster.jpg
Star Trek: Beyond

wow....by far the best in the new films and a very close second in the Star Trek films overall....this movie is so action packed i lost track of time and space...a well done and immediate plot with a nice little twist at the end....as always in these films and amazing cast who really work well together....even a couple of real tear jerking moments

3d sucked and was absolutely pointless...see it regular with a great sound system

http://www.impawards.com/2016/poster...sters_ver6.jpg
Ghostbusters

was seriously worried about this one and i loved it. The characters were really fun and the comedy was great...all of the cameos were hilarious....overall relax and enjoy what was meant to be a fun movie....i just wish they had tied it in with the other films rather than just recreating....either way it was a blast

http://www.ramascreen.com/wp-content...0805273907.jpg
Everybody Wants Some!!

Richard Linklater's "sequel" to Dazed and Confused....which is in no way an actual sequel but more a continuation of theme and feeling...follows a group of baseball players just before their new semester of school starts including four freshman

like Dazed and Confused this film is simple in plot....the transition of youth into adulthood and like Dazed and Confused it's well written, well shot, and very well acted....another great movie of just watching people live

I know the ED classrooms well. Lots of coloring, board games, and card games. No funding for computers or the internet. Algebra was the highest attainable math course offered within the system. NO trig, pre-calc, or calc. Science ended after Earth Science. No biology, chemistry, or physics. And you could forget about arts/music/humanities courses.

For a few years, we were short-bussed to an elementary school where we'd receive rudimentary art or music instruction... but these were 3rd grade teachers. It was an embarrassment.

But what did you think of the last two Star Trek films? PS: Isn't that actor dead? I'm guessing it was filmed before he died?

Did Leonard Nimoy have a cameo?

Edit: nevermind, I realized just after I posted this you were talking about Anton Yelchin... Yeah he just barely died like a few weeks ago...

I'm still pretty shocked that dude died. He was really great in Charlie Bartlett

Yup, his SUV slipped out of park and crushed him against a stone wall. Tragic.

Watched Batman V Superman. Mostly a muddled mess but still some killer action and fight scenes.

YorkeDaddy 07-24-2016 11:30 AM

Went and saw Light's Out. Kinda crappy, basically the same jump scare roughly 12 times with some bad dialogue in-between. 4/10

i loved the first one and really enjoyed the second

i went with that poster because of Anton Yelchin's death and i've had a soft spot for the character since Star Trek 4 A Voyage Home

They don't actually touch on his death at all in the film itself say a credit spot that says "This is for Anton"

not a cameo per say but the film really deals with his death

I think making a good Warcraft movie would have ensured Duncan's success as one of the greatest directors ever. He had a lot of critical success with Moon and Source Code, and making the first legit good video game movie would have been a milestone in the film insustry. Well, it's possible he went the Michael Bay route, and I can only hope for him this doesn't affect is career in the future.

Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010)

I haven't enjoyed this much audio-visual goodness in quite some time. I can't decide which is better - the film or the soundtrack (the epic 1966 - Let The New Age Of Enlightenment Begin especially)

Chula Vista 07-26-2016 11:27 AM

Saw The Big Short last night.

Best black comedy I've seen since In The Loop. Virtuoso performance by Bale, as usual. And the movie really broke down the roots of the financial disaster of 2007-2008.

Very sobering story about how greed corrupts.
