Heh, there's also mumblecore, which sounds even more like a music genre (slowcore always comes to mind)

by chance have you read the book the film is based on?

also in case you have not heard of it please add The Congress to your list....you'll love it :)

Ah yes, the soundtrack is great. No, I haven't read the book, I didn't even know there was one. So how would you compare the two? Is the film its own thing?

I've heard of The Congress, but haven't seen it yet. Will go on my watchlist. This is what I've seen so far (I'm including just sci-fi, maybe some borderline cases, and mostly from the last 5 or so years):

Coherence (very, very good)
10 Cloverfield Lane (pretty good)
Under the Skin (great)
Spring (this was disappointing)
Time Laps (ok)
Synchronicity (eh ok, the idea is better than the execution; I loved the noir feel)
Enemy (not really sci-fi, but can be interpreted; very good)
I Origins (good)
Upstream Color (great)
Chronicle (more superhero, but pretty good)
Ex Machina (great)
Uncanny (similar to Ex Machina, but not as good; still better than I expected)
Another Earth (very good)
Sound of My Voice (I enjoyed this even more)
The Signal (this was going strong in wtf department, but then became too actiony)
The Lobster (very interesting)
Beyond the Black Rainbow (the best of the bunch for me, that wouldn't nearly be so great without the amazing soundtrack. Like in Under the Skin, the sound is really complementing the picture)

Phew! I have a feeling I'm forgetting some. Suggestions appreciated.

Exo 07-31-2016 04:52 PM

I'm disappointed you didn't enjoy Spring. I thought it was a good film besides some of the acting from the dude.

dankrsta 07-31-2016 05:35 PM

^
A case of high expectations. I knew it was a romance with horror and some sci fi elements, but I expected more mystery in presentation if not necessarily more horror. I tied it together, in my watchlist, with Under the Skin and A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night for the kind of films I was looking for and it pales in comparison to those two. So, not a bad film, just disappointing. Maybe needs a rewatch away from those films. As for the acting,...well 'bad' acting isn't really a turn off for me.

Star Trek Beyond...

Wow

robertbrown1 07-31-2016 11:49 PM

Kabali is the last film I had seen.

CarlosTavez 08-03-2016 10:27 AM

Snake in the Eagle Shadow last watched film. I enjoyed a lot while seeing this one. lol

JGuy Grungeman 08-03-2016 10:51 AM

The Fast and the Furious. Pretty good for an early 2000's action film.

In hindsight it might be a fun movie, but at the time its fanbase was largely made up of the dregs of human society (wiggers and dudebros), and anyone with taste wanted them dead. So it was kind of hard to separate the two.

This was a good movie. This was not a good Coen brothers movie. I will say that Troy Nelson was one of their best characters though. 6/10

Hell yeah it is but I'm a Fast fan. I recently picked up the seven movie dvd set.

I ended up running through it while on vacation. I can't wait til Fast8 comes out.

I agree. I think my favorite part was John Goodman.

I liked tFntF because it reminded me of the Need for Speed games. I have 3 of them. I plan on watching them all, no matter how brainless some of them are.

I'm two years late to the party, but I'm finally watching interstellar. Interesting concept, but a bit boring so far.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 08-04-2016 01:40 PM

Inside Llweyn Davis is personally one of my favourite Coen brother films.

I last watched CODE OF SILENCE (1985) recorded off analogue cable (Channel 61 (WTIC)) on VHS :)

No one talking about Suicide Squad? What??

Anyway I didn't really like it. 5/10

djchameleon 08-06-2016 06:44 PM

I ****ed loved Suicide Squad for what it was.

I'd probably give it a 8/10 but I'm definitely going to go see it two more times in theaters. I really didn't want to see it in 3D yesterday but it was the only time that was available when I had free time.

Just don't watch it in 3D and you'll be fine.

What didn't you like about it, YD?

Chula Vista 08-06-2016 06:57 PM

10 Cloverfield Lane

What a great movie. So much more than I expected based on what seemed like a minimal premise. All three leads were fantastic. Goodman and especially Winstead knocked it out of the park. I've been a big fan of Winstead for years now but she's taken it to a whole other level with her work here.

Love the tie in at the end. Very well handled.

5 stars. Unique, original, extremely well acted and filmed, and just plain entertaining.

The tie in at the end seemed like it was a last minute decision. It was just tacked on there. Not very well handled imo.

It was definitely an afterthought.

I heard it did terrible. Someone named it as "ghostbusters but with villians". Not sure i'd be into that.

YorkeDaddy 08-06-2016 07:21 PM

My issues with Suicide Squad:

From the very beginning it comes across as a rushed mess. It's an origin scene with a 70's rock song recycled five times before we actually get into the story. There's way too many characters and the only one that gets even remotely fleshed out is Will Smith. The action scenes were trash. Jared Leto did well but got basically no screentime. The plot was predictable and the villains were awful and looked comically bad. There were several characters that could have been cut from the movie completely and it wouldn't change a thing. Killer Croc was only there to make terrible jokes. Harley was oversexualized and had no substance and was basically a bastardization of the great character from Batman TAS and the Arkham games. Batman was thrown into the movie for 2 stupid scenes where he does nothing simply so that they could say he was in it. The Flash cameo was cheap and pointless. The faceless henchmen get shot at by an entire military squadron and nothing happens to them, meanwhile Harley kills them by the dozen with a baseball bat.

I could keep going but man I just disliked a whole lot about it. Positives include some of the performances and humor but that's about it

Sadly, the made-for-3d cinematography in movies annoys me because it's been done so often.

Valid points that I just seemed to overlook because guess what? I know it's a superhero well super villain movie and I just give those movies passes on smaller things. There have been certain superhero movies that have come out lately that make us want to hold these big blockbusters to a higher standard but they aren't the norm. I'm just in it for the fun and it was fun to me regardless of those problems with it. I feel like they only fleshed out Will Smith's character and gave him emotion because they didn't really have time to dig into each character the same way. The scene at the beginning was great to get people acclimated with characters they don't know for the most part. If you are a nerdy ass fan and already knew the information then I can see why it pissed you off or you thought it was unnecessary. It wasn't meant for you.

The Batlord 08-07-2016 11:45 AM

I've been avoiding all these Suicide Squad posts since I haven't seen the movie yet and have been waiting for it like a child for Christmas for the better part of a year at least, so could you all put anything even approaching a spoiler in spoiler tags? I don't even want to click on this thread and accidentally read something I didn't want to see (not that I would know if you've been dropping spoilers anyway). Have a heart.

Frownland 08-07-2016 12:02 PM

Never.

I've honestly gotten a little bored of superhero movies. If they can make a new formula for them, maybe i'd watch them, but they always feel the same.

That's why a Harley Quinn solo movie (which is already set in motion) could be so important. She's a different kind of character who would necessitate a different kind of movie, much like Deadpool or Guardians of the Galaxy. Which is also why it's important for Suicide Squad to succeed.

And **** you. I don't care how many superhero movies they release. I'll watch them all and still come back for more. Now if only they'd do a new Swamp Thing movie. That could potentially be massively epic.

Key 08-07-2016 12:14 PM

In fairness, I love Deadpool. But the only reason I enjoyed it is because of the exact reason that they went a different route. If superhero movies could be a bit more R rated and not play it safe all the time, I would enjoy them way more.

JGuy Grungeman 08-07-2016 12:37 PM

Dredd might be up your alley, if you haven't seen it.

I'm a sucker for superhero movies, especially Marvel.

Have you seen Watchmen? I thought that was stylistically very different to most other films of the genre.

Saw that in 3D in theaters and it was fan-****ing-tastic.

Yac 08-08-2016 08:16 AM

Dredd was surprisingly good. A no bs movie that has a fairly simple premise but delivers on it 100%. A movie that sure, is to a large extent focused on spectacular violence, but it won't treat you the viewer like you're an idiot.
Watchmen .. I could write pages about it, it is imo the best movie of 2009 (and the competition was pretty stiff). Thing is, it's so specific you'll either love it or you'll hate it. It's not a "one size fits all" universal story that "everyone can enjoy". It has a unique style and approach to many topics, things that "mainsteram" superhero genre movies like the x men or avengers are just starting to explore - accountability, consequences of your actions, mixing real historical events and figures with fantasy.

How do you feel about the watchmen movie ending though compared to the graphic novel ending?

Feel free to go into details in spoilers for those who have seen it yet.

It pissed me off. Without the comic within a comic, it doesn't allow you to feel the pain of ozymandias. Also, without the alien, it doesn't give you a cohesive reason for everyone to join together. Russia has no way of knowing if Dr. Manhattan is going to just attack them or not. Doesn't give a logical reason for them to end the war.

I think they had to go that route based on how many who would watch the movie hadn't read the novel. If they'd been faithful it would have thrown too many people for a loop. It was weird enough reading it, can't imagine what it would have been like for someone walking into the movie cold.

Just watched species and am moving onto the second movie. See if they can make a half way decent film like the first one.

The answer is no.

The further you go into those sequels the worse they get but I love B movies so it's just fine for me. I enjoyed them.
