I wasn't super into Hereditary tbh. Like I liked the vibe and all but it just didn't leave the biggest impression. Maybe I just need to give it another shot but I've liked each of the director's movies better than the last. So Hereditary < The Witch < Midsommar. And The Northman is by the same director, right? So I really need to see that.
|
^You're mixing up Robert Eggers and Ari Aster.
Most people say otherwise but I thought Midsommar was way better. It's more original and focused. Hereditary has higher highs though. Well, if you can call extremely compelling depictions of grief high. Fallen (2022) was the funnest time I had with a bad movie since The Room. Last Night In Soho was fantastic, had a really well done Persona-esque identity crisis that developed in pretty surprising ways. Belfast - Solid drama that becomes a satire if you pay any level of attention to the soundtrack. Lot of good but inconsistent cinematography that made it feel like the script was written around the shots. |
Who Killed Captain Alex?
Godly. I think this is the most a movie has ever made me laugh. Gotta see more films with video jockeys if they're anywhere near as good as Emmie. So quotable, so sincere, so many shot for shot ripoffs from Bruce Lee movies, so goddamn fun. I dare you not to love this movie. MOVIE MOVIE MOVIE! |

2021 War of the Worlds.
Caught it just starting and thought, what the hell? Turned out to be pretty decent (better than the 1950s version and far better than Cruise's effort anyway) - big budget without big stars (never heard of any of them), set again of course in America (sorry HG, nobody cares about Victorian England it would seem, other than Jeff Wayne). But what really made it was they used actual (so far as I could follow it) decent science, and used that as the plot device whereby the Martians were defeated. I'd have to say it was enjoyable. Plus the lead scientist was female, and was able to out-think all the men. Definitely a few bad points - abrupt ending without enough of an epilogue, two characters at the end just vanished after a subplot about their mother being in a nursing home was floated - but overall I'd have to say 2 hours not wasted. Oh. Not to be confused with the mini-series starring Gabriel Byrne, also released in 2021, also very good. But not a movie. |

OK, confusing. I couldn't find it either, and had to check my deleted programmes to check it. It actually goes under the title of "Alien Conquest", so you might be able to find it that way. If not, let me know and I'll hook you up.
|
If it's this one, directed by Matthew Cooke, then yeah, I'm not finding it anywhere.

That's the one! :thumb: I mean, it's not brilliant, but it's worth a watch. Good effects, and you get to see people burned up like cinders, so can't all be bad. Plus a sort of semi-911 scene than might make you wince a little...
|
I shall give it a proper viewing. Thanks!

I rented Top Gun - Maverick last night for $6. I was too busy making fun of it and having my daughter cracking up to actually remember anything notable about it. Worth it for those moments though.
|
There was lots of eye candy. Lots of things blew up. It was entertaining, nothing more, nothing less. That's how I saw the movie.
|
I remember it being predictable.
|
I loved Tom Cruise's OTT sex noises while he was doing the Death Star trench run the first time.
|
Now that you mention it, the noises were funny.

The Long Day Closes Directed by Terence Davies Uhhhhhhh is thisthe most beautiful British film of all time? I actually think it might be. I can't get it out of my head since I saw it a few days ago. It's astounding how well made and lyrical it is. Transforming. |
I recently watched Cube 2 from 2003. It was super cheesy and the effects are dog **** but I would lie if I say it wasn't entertained

After two years of following Red Letter Media's Best of the Worst YouTube channel, I finally sat down today and watched Space Cop - their feature film paying homage to b-grade cinema. It was absolutely fantastic, and now I understand why copies of the DVD trade for hundreds of dollars on eBay.
It's definitely more enjoyable if you've already followed their film critiques to familiarize yourself with their brand of dry humor, but in spite of my fears given the hype it did not disappoint. |
Saw the new Hellraiser. Pretty good! They leaned into the mythos, which I like, and they did a good job with it (so many didn't), also expanding it a little. There's a somewhat rehashing of themes, like how Voight is another Channard, but it might be more endearing than annoying.
It's gory, but not quite as gruesome or sadistic in feel or atmosphere as the first two. The new cenobites and designs are kinda cool. Hope they make a sequel in which we get to see more of the labyrinth. |
The two most fun to watch horror movies that aren't horror comedies are Jaws and Dog Soldiers. Everyone loves Jaws but they need to get their heads out of their asses and recognize the greatness of Dog Soldiers.

America the beautiful
On Disney + channel .. but it is more of a documentary .. as a movie I recently watched 50 cents movie get rich or die trying .. that is a cool movie..

This was a fun one. Lots of nostalgia and wackiness as it chronicles Al's career through blatant, but sometimes believable exaggerations.

Also, Toby Huss did great job as his Dad. He's aged well.

1917 I don't think I've been this affected by a war film since Saving Private Ryan/Band of Brothers Season 1. I mean, the Netflix All Quiet on the Western Front had some insane set pieces and acting but 1917 was just balls to the wall suspense and perfection. I don't think you could ask more from an action/suspense film. It reminded me of the border crossing in Sicario but for two whole hours. Brilliant cinematography by the GOAT Roger Deakins and a score that complimented the film well. I usually don't like when the music tells me when I should start feeling emotional but Mendes figured out a way to get me their first so the music accentuated the moment real well. I was floored by it really. Amazing movie. |

My two recent watches: https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/..._AC_SY580_.jpg A decent watch, Elliot as per usual is great but the plot is a little hamstrung and the bigfoot was disappointing - if not a little gross. https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/..._AC_SY580_.jpg Now this was great. A complete mind bender. Similar in concept to some of the more trippy Twilight Zone episodes. You don't know what to believe, you don't know what's real, don't know who to trust. If you've got Amazon Prime, you can watch it for free. |

The movie Green Book is on Amazon Prime; has it been discussed already?
Like a lot of "based on a true story" movies it's not full of plot twists or surprises, but it is good at recreating a slice of 60s America. https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/20...g?v=1665113556 If you watch it you may wonder like me, "Why have I never heard of the Don Shirley Trio before?" This striking song pops up when you search youtube, but I found most of Don Shirley's other music a little too well-behaved, a little too cerebral:- |
Green Book was fine. I didn't find it terribly exciting and can't remember any lasting impressions, but I did enjoy it. No Birdman, though (my favourite best picture winner going back).
I saw Barbarian and didn't really like it. The start was good, but it's like it opts for a much stupider and less scary story than it could've been. Smile was also kinda stupid, but rather more fun, I thought |
The best part of Green Book was watching Viggo scarf down food the whole length of the film.
