Well, I don't really think he tries to hide his bias, he uses it for comedic effect. When he did a review of Brawl he admitted to not having played the previous Smash games and for hating fighting games in general.

So yeah, he's biased as all hell, and everybody but his stupidest fanboys know it. However I credit him for never trying to be objective.

Also, he makes point and click adventure games for a living, they look pretty bad.

I also like to make up causes for fights in Smash Bros, like what are the characters fighting over?

Samus fights Wolf because he has a bounty on his head and Samus wants to collect the reward.

Donkey Kong punishes Wario because he tried to steal his hoard of bananas.

Zelda attacks Peach because she made a crack about her taste in footwear, "what kinda princess wears boots anyway?".

Pikachu goes after Mr. Game & Watch because, well, he's a racist.

Sonic attacks Mario in a furious rage, pissed off because he made some snide remark about the quality of his more recent games, and saying that Sega are now "Nintendo's bitch", and also Mario angrily suspects Sonic might be screwing around with the Princess after finding a blue colored quill in her undergarments, hmm...

Oh yes, he's not hiding the fact he's not the best reviewer so I don't think he tries to trick people into thinking he's more able than he is. I've hung around some gaming forums though where threads were made every time he reviewed stuff and then I was surprised at how many people seemed to take him more serious than I would.

It's really a problem with those people though, not so much Yahtzee who I think is occasionally funny.

He makes some fascinating points, like that undead guy from TP actually being Link from OOT and MB. Seriously the Zelda series is FULL of these kinds of cryptic clues, like the reappearing sheikah symbol for example.

But I think his timeline is way off, I think mine makes a whole lot more sense.

He has LTTP and the Four Swords games way too far apart, they're very closely connected. In the GBA version, the Four Sword actually makes a cameo appearance.

Though it's now a bit confusing, I think MC and the FS games take place before LTTP because they explain where Ganon got his trident, which he had in LTTP. But if the master sword was destroyed before the events of MC then how did it end up in LTTP?

how does a video game achieve that? final fantasy 7 came close, the majority of everything else does not. escapism != human condition.

we literally spent a week in college tearing this idea apart.

like it or not, they're not art. artsy for sure, but not art.

This is EXACTLY the argument people made for motion pictures way back in the day.

I also think your definition of art is an incredibly shallow one. Art is many things, it dosen't always have to reflect the human condition and indeed art can have escapist qualities to it, without reducing it to mere entertainment.

Art is by it's simplest definition, an aesthetic experience, a man made creation that can provoke thought, awe or curiousity, and if you knew your post-modernism you'd know that art can be pretty much anything you want it to be.

And I do think video games reflect the human condition, I think games and sports in general can be considered an art form. They require quick thinking, problem solving, memorization, exploration, alertness, teamwork and patience. It's a balance of these things that makes a good gaming experience. And because I look at video games as being an experience rather than just a diversion, I think there is great artistic potential in it.

Games are not just for fun, throughout history games are looked at metophorically, they teach you a lot of skills that are also good to have in real life. Chess is looked at that way, Baseball is looked at that way, so why not a video game?

I'm not even talking about games with artsy graphics, I'm saying that gameplay in itself, can be considered an art. If video games were only escapism, everyone would just play them casually, why even care to make so many websites about video games or even write about them? Obviously it's something that means a lot to a lot of people.

You can look at it as just a hobby, but I see all hobbies as being a form of artistic expression, it's taking an interest to something that speaks to you and your "human condition". If art is just about expressing yourself, then video games are without a doubt a way you can choose to express yourself, especially those that allow free reign and control over your environment. Sure, the developer still has some control over the environment and what can happen, but that's where the video games feel like a cooperation between the player and the developer. That's brilliant when you think about it, you can't do that with any other form of art or entertainment.

Now you're right to say that for the most part video games appeal to our escapist desires, so does action films. But unlike action films, video games actually let us act them out and experience them like we're really there. That alone makes it a step beyond literature and cinema in the sheer amount of potential it has.

This is all just my opinion of course. But please feel free to tell me I'm objectively wrong because that's how snobs like you roll.

Actually, I think Nintendo fans can be just as guilty of what I was talking about.

You can call me a Nintendo fanboy. But I don't see it that way, yes, I do love Nintendo a lot f*cking more than the normal person.

But I see the word fanboy as being part of "the cult". I don't participate in any Nintendo fansites or forums, and in general Nintendo fanboys can piss me off just as much as everyone else, they're guilty of many of the things I've been complaining about so far, and many more things I will bring up in the future.

There's nothing about this thread that should lead you to believe that this is anything other than an excuse for me to rant about my subjective opinions because that's the entire point of these kinda threads, just ask Urban.

If you can't take my opinions then you don't have to, I still have plenty more to rant about, and yes I am saving some things for last, not even Nintendo fans will be safe from my rantathon.

Whoa boy, where do I start with this one?

You'd think by having such a monopoly on the game retail business they wouldn't be so goddamn anal about spending their money.

First thing, there are several kinds of Gamestop employees, but 4 that seem to be most prominent.

Token hot chicks who are banking on their large voluptuous breasts to distract you from the fact that they have absolutely no means to help you because they're too busy getting laid to give a flying f*ck about gaming.

Guys who'd rather flirt with them than pay you any attention.

Fat, greasy, balding Xbox fanboys who berate you for investing any interest in non Xbox products.

And then of course there are the head honchos who actually know a thing or two about video games who can give you helpful advice, but not without being smug jerks about it and constantly hounding you to preorder new releases or subscribe to that piece of f*ck Game Informer.

But what REALLY boils my sh*t is their buyback policy, it's a a f*cking ripoff. Say I buy a game that just came out this week, I don't like it so I want to sell it, I'm not expecting a full refund but give me a damn break, if you want to give these leeches 10 bucks for a new release that they're inevitably gonna sell again for $60 as "new" then you go right ahead, you might as well cut your own balls off.

But what can you do? They're still the best option for buying used games so I still go there, I guess some people's misfortune is my own personal gain. But if you want to sell some games and actually make a damn profit off of them (which is kinda, you know, the whole f*cking point) I'd recommend a pawn shop.
