I like a game that gives me principal and secondary tasks to do (not too linear) but still tasks to do as in I`m reaching an overall goal with interesting characters and locations etc. For example, I find mini missions such as helping a villager look for his lost son or wife boring, especially if there is an endless supply of these misssions (Zelda tends to get these type of mission spot on though) Somebody mentioned its similiarity to LOTR above, but of course LOTR always had a set task and was very focused.

The best roleplaying game I`ve ever played to date is still Final Fantasy VII and any game that can get me an experience like that.....
Ah FF7 remains a classic indeed even though it's now 15 years old.

If you haven't played Xenogears or Chrono Trigger/Cross, I highly recommend checking out those classics as well.

FF > Zelda. Yeah I said it

Are you sure it's all hand crafted? I'm fairly certain I remember reading an interview with Todd Howard about how large swaths of Oblivion were randomly generated, and that only major quest areas and some of the bigger minor quest areas were custom made.

I know that was the case with II (aka Daggerfall) which explains how ridiculously large that map was, and I think that parts of Oblivion were also randomly generated as well. Skyrim's environments look a lot more dissimilar to me so far, so good news on that front.

Edit: Yep, parts of oblivion were randomly generated: http://kotaku.com/5858056/skyrim-wil...l-as-minecraft

I thought Oblivion was really boring, but I'm really loving Skyrim. I think my attitude to playing it is different from what it was, I'm really settling into the world and my character and balancing side quests and the main missions more effectively than I did with Oblivion, so I constantly feel like I'm progressing and developing. Something that I just didn't get with Oblivion, which ultimately made me give up with it.

I think that was mostly due to two things:

1) The leveling system. Oblivion has one of the worst and most unsatisfying leveling systems I've ever seen.

2) The world scaling. It didn't matter if you were level 2 or level 20, enemies would scale in level with you so you never really felt overmatched, nor did you ever feel super powerful/strong.
